A program funded by the Department of Science and Technology
00:03
and under the Science for Change Niche Centers in the Region Program
00:09
was started at Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi
00:13
to help the seaweed industry there and in the whole country.
00:17
And now, to learn more about this detail,
00:21
we will be joined by Dr. Zayda Halon,
00:24
the Project Leader of the DOS Teenage Centers in the Region
00:27
for R&D Program on Seaweeds.
00:30
Good morning, Dr. Zayda.
00:32
Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:33
This is Diana and Audrey.
00:35
Good morning.
00:37
Good morning. Thank you for inviting us.
00:40
Good morning to all of our viewers.
00:43
Okay, Dr. Zayda, could you please share with us
00:45
what is the problem in the seaweed farming in Tawi-Tawi?
00:49
What are the obstacles in the development of this industry?
00:55
The biggest problem of the seaweed industry right now
00:59
is the decline in production.
01:03
And the cause of this is the low quality of the seedlings
01:13
because they are using the same strains over the last 50 years.
01:18
So, we need to be able to produce new strains
01:23
to replace what our farmers are planting right now.
01:27
How big is the seaweed industry in the Philippines?
01:31
How many farmers are affected by this problem?
01:40
Dr. Halon, there is a problem with our signal.
01:46
We are talking about the DOS Teenage Program
01:51
which is under the Science for Change Centers in the Region Program.
01:57
This was started by Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi.
02:02
A while ago, they talked about the seaweed industry.
02:05
One of the challenges of the seaweed industry
02:10
is the low quality of seedlings.
02:12
We will find out later what are the solutions
02:17
to help the seaweed industry in the Philippines.
02:21
Of course, in the Mindanao area,
02:24
three years ago, the DOS Teenage Program was planned
02:27
to expand the seaweed industry.
02:29
Now, we will ask Dr. Saida to tell us
02:33
what are the products that can be produced by the seaweed industry.
02:40
Okay.
02:41
We will have Dr. Saida again.
02:44
Alright, Doc.
02:45
Good morning to all of you.
02:47
Good morning.
02:48
I'm sorry for the low signal here in Tawi-Tawi.
02:51
The internet signal is weak.
02:53
No, we understand.
02:55
What I'm trying to say is that
02:57
we cannot count the number of farmers
03:00
but there are around 1.2 million people involved in the industry
03:05
including their families who have jobs
03:08
and earn money in this industry.
03:10
So, many people are affected by the decline in the production
03:14
of our seaweed farming industry.
03:16
Okay.
03:17
Doctor, for the public's knowledge,
03:20
what are the products that can be produced by the seaweed industry?
03:26
The most extracted product from the Ucumatoid seaweeds
03:31
is carrageenan.
03:33
This is what is used in the food and non-food industries.
03:36
It thickens.
03:38
If you notice, it is used in ice cream, burgers,
03:42
in our toothpaste, cosmetics.
03:44
It has carrageenan.
03:46
It is mixed.
03:48
Especially those that have water and oil that cannot be mixed.
03:51
It can be mixed if it has carrageenan.
03:53
So, it has many applications.
03:55
This is what is extracted and this is the biggest industry
03:58
from our seaweed farms.
04:00
Okay.
04:01
What is the Niseron Seaweeds in MSU Tawi-Tawi?
04:05
Who will be given the service of this center?
04:10
So, this Seaweed Research and Development Center
04:13
was established in Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi
04:17
to address the decline of our production of seaweeds.
04:21
So, we have three laboratories.
04:24
We have a Seaweed Tissue Lab, Culture Lab,
04:27
where we produce new strains
04:29
from the existing farm cultivars and from the wild.
04:33
Because we have a lot of wild populations of eukaryotic seaweeds.
04:37
So, we use seaweed tissue culture techniques
04:40
to produce new seedlings.
04:42
Then, we take care of our nursery
04:45
and distribute it to the farmers.
04:48
Because we need to give our farmers a new harvest
04:52
so that their seaweeds production can increase again.
04:57
As you said, the production of seaweeds can increase.
05:01
In your opinion, ma'am,
05:02
the technology that you have developed in Niseron Seaweeds,
05:06
can you also share it with the farmers in other parts of the country?
05:11
Because it is now concentrated in Mindanao.
05:16
So, the technology can be shared.
05:19
But the seedlings that we produce cannot be distributed.
05:23
We have to make sure that there are no microbes
05:27
that can be transferred to other places in the Philippines.
05:30
So, we really need to clean these seedlings before we transfer them.
05:35
But the technology of producing seedlings can be shared.
05:40
Okay.
05:41
So, Dr. Zaida mentioned low-quality seedlings.
05:45
That is one of your challenges.
05:49
So, what is your timeline, ma'am,
05:51
so that the seedlings that you mentioned
05:55
can be distributed and utilized?
06:02
We are saying that within the next three years,
06:05
the seedlings can be distributed in other parts of the Philippines.
06:09
Right now, we are in Sulu Archipelago
06:12
just to make sure that the seedlings grow well
06:18
and make sure that it will not spread
06:20
if there are microbes that can be transferred to other places.
06:23
So that the disease of ice ice will increase.
06:25
Ice ice disease is one of the diseases of seaweeds.
06:28
It turns white and disintegrates,
06:31
which we don't want to happen in other sites.
06:34
So, this is all for now.
06:37
Sorry, I mixed up the words.
06:39
It's easier, I guess, to make sure that we ensure first that it's clean
06:44
before we transfer it to other sites.
06:47
Dr. Saida, if a business is interested in investing in the seaweed industry,
06:54
why should they invest here?
06:56
Do you think that in the next few years,
07:01
they will be able to earn and invest here?
07:07
It's a huge industry right now.
07:10
Actually, there is a huge demand for carrageen worldwide.
07:13
We have processors in the Philippines.
07:16
Actually, we are the largest producer of carrageen.
07:19
We distribute carrageen all over the world.
07:23
So, we really need to invest because this is our raw material.
07:27
If we don't have raw material, we won't be able to process it.
07:30
In fact, we have a 60% deficit of raw material.
07:33
We are importing raw material from Indonesia
07:36
to meet the needs of our processors.
07:40
So, we really need to increase our production.
07:43
Alright, maybe this is the last message, Dr. Saida,
07:46
about this program and what you want to convey to the public.
07:50
Go ahead.
07:52
Anyway, I just want to say that I hope that in the next 3 years,
07:57
or let's say 10 years,
07:59
the capacity of our seaweed farmers will return
08:03
to produce better quality seaweeds
08:07
to meet the demand for carrageen worldwide
08:11
and to diversify our products that can be produced from our seaweeds.
08:16
Not only carrageen, but also bioplastics and other animal feeds
08:21
that we can get from our seaweeds.
08:25
Thank you very much for the time you gave
08:27
to share our work in the Seaweed Research and Development Center
08:32
funded by the Department of Science and Technology.
08:35
Thank you very much for your time, Dr. Saida and Halon.
08:39
I hope your program will help many more people.
08:42
And again, thank you very much.
08:44
Thank you very much, Doctor.
