00:00All right, Bondi's ready to roll, courtesy of the River Islands guest line, Brian Bondinger,
00:04presented by our proud partner, Golden State, serving the Bay Area for three generations.
00:10Building better starts with Golden State. Will you succeed? Will you succeed? Visit
00:14goldenstatelumber.com. Bondi, good morning to you. I know you're ready to roll here. Football's
00:20in full swing, and we're heading into November, man, where the champs will separate themselves
00:25from the chumps, and the separation's starting here in the NFL, although we had a wacky wild
00:30Sunday. Let's start with the 49ers and Cowboys, though, Bondi, and I know you watched the game
00:34over, and I watched your breakdowns on Twitter or on X-Facts, and say, let's start with Kyle
00:38Shanahan. There's been a lot made about him and his game plans and whether or not he's still or
00:42whatnot. I thought he had a really good game plan for the Dallas Cowboys, running the football,
00:47play action passes or whatnot. How would you assess Shanahan's performance Sunday as head
00:51coach of the 49ers and his offensive play colleague? I thought he was excellent. I thought
00:55he was really good, and I thought there would be a steady dose of runs. I mean, the Cowboys have
01:00now lost four games, and in those four losses, New Orleans, Baltimore, Detroit, and then San
01:06Francisco, they couldn't stop any of those teams from really running him. And to see the rookie
01:11Isaac Arendo, really, he's coming on, and you can see his speed, and he's starting to press the hole
01:18right now. And a lot of guys that are fast like that, they just want to use their speed. They
01:24don't trust their vision as much, and he does that right now. And so that was a big difference.
01:29But look, the matchup with Kittle and Donovan Wilson for the big play, I thought they were
01:36excellent in the red zone. I thought all the way around, it was a solid, solid game plan.
01:40I want to get back to Arendo here, because I'm watching Mason. I'm a big Mason fan,
01:44and it felt like maybe he was missing the wrong holes or maybe choosing the wrong spot to cut
01:50back. I'm not as sophisticated as him as a runner. I don't know the offense as well,
01:54but it just felt like since the shoulder injury, he wasn't running with the same ferocity finishing
01:58runs as he had weeks prior. And Arendo's gotten better and better every single week. Now,
02:04put Mason to the side here. What specifically did you see from Arendo that you think is
02:09sustainable going forward? Because he's got the juice. Well, he's got breakaway speed now. You
02:17saw that in the 76-yard run, I think, the week before. But he's got breakaway speed. I mean,
02:22he was the fastest back in the draft at 218 pounds. So I mean, speed is... So you got that.
02:28But there's a lot of guys that have speed that don't know how to run. I just think he's got
02:33really good. He's got really good feet. I don't know if he's as powerful as Mason is
02:39when he puts his head down and he steamrolls people, the way you described, because that's
02:43how he was finishing those runs. But this guy is still, he's still a load though. I mean,
02:48he's still big. And every running back has to kind of... Like I remember blocking for different backs
02:55and some backs would, you knew where they were going and some backs, you just couldn't figure
03:02out where they were going. And I feel like the dance that every back has to do with the offense
03:06line. I think the rhythm is starting to come with him. And you saw that. You saw that against
03:11Dallas. Yeah. You've been all over Isaac Arendo there with that top end speed. Reminded a lot of
03:16us of Raheem Mostard with the number 31, with that top end speed. Once he gets a crease, he's
03:20got here. We're talking to Baldy here on the River Islands guest line. I got to ask you about George
03:25Kittle, man. I know he sent you to Zinni Glasses. We had him on when you were in studio. And you
03:29know, I think people were writing his demise and basically saying, you know, maybe this is last
03:33year, George Kittle. And I'm thinking to myself, John Lynch and company need to find a way to
03:37extend this guy. He's playing like one of the best headings of football. He's having to resurgence.
03:41He had a thousand yards last year and just a tone center, Baldy. We think about tone centers.
03:46This guy's not looking to run out of bounds. He's looking to run right through your face.
03:50And in the past game, he still is good with the football in his hands with the run after he catch.
03:56Kittle's having an all pro season, Baldy. Well, that 43 yard catch and run,
04:02but he was, he was matched up with the safety Donovan Wilson, you know,
04:05and he ran away from the whole defense right there. And so, you know, George told me when he
04:10was a rookie, his tight end coach told him coming out of Iowa that you should never get tackled one
04:16on one, never. And he has that mentality. Like he's going to run somebody over. He's going to
04:21stay on his feet. He's not going to go out of bounds. He's going to draw a piece, a little bit
04:26of blood every time he hits somebody like it's, he is a tone setter. He is a, you know, and he's,
04:32he's having one of his best seasons. Now he finished really strong last year,
04:36but you know, he is the red zone offense when it comes to passing right now and what he can do.
04:40And so I think he's got a lot of football left. His blocking was outstanding the other day
04:46and it still is. And so he takes a great deal of pride in it. It's a big part of their running
04:52success right now. And so he's indispensable with this seat. Yeah. I'm looking at the, the,
04:59the two receivers, Debo and, and Pierce on Debo was utilizing in a variety of ways in this one,
05:05but like, Hey, without Brandon, I UK, what are the, what are these wide receivers going to look
05:08like? I thought Pierce all looked way better in this one. And maybe it was just because he was
05:12getting targeted, made a really nice adjusted catch on that out play where Brock anticipated
05:17before he even broke such a great throw. And then Debo, they finally got him matched up on
05:23some linebackers out of the backfield. I thought Debo was awesome. I know he had the big touchdown
05:28call back, but without Brandon, I, for one week, what did it look like when these receivers?
05:33It looked good. I mean, I think Pierce all could step into that role. I mean, he's not as polished
05:38obviously yet as what you guys been, but he's a good route runner. He separates the out route
05:43you talked about. He separates and that's what you loved about him coming out of Florida.
05:48Was his ability to just put the foot in the ground? I, I compared him and Ladd McConkie,
05:52like really, really similar between the two of them.
05:55McConkie leads the chargers and receptions right now. And I feel like Pierce all could do a lot of
06:00the same things that McConkie is doing. I don't know if you had a chance to watch him yet. Great
06:04game last week, but I got, I thought they were both very similar. I thought Pierce was a little
06:08stronger maybe than McConkie, but I thought they were very, very similar. And you know,
06:13and I think that's what you're going to see as time goes on here with Pearsall.
06:17Yeah. I see the vision with Pearsall here and I think they can implement Jacob Cowley a little
06:21bit better, but we got to talk about the quarterback here. We've been talking to you
06:24for about five minutes now, Baldy. And I thought it was a tale of two halves. The first half
06:28little clucky at times. I didn't like to read Devo Samuel when he motioned about the backfield
06:32and he got matched up on Kendrick's there. But Brock Purdy, how would you assess his first
06:37eight games of the season as a Niners or Niner fans? I say not the Niners. Niners know who they
06:42have, but a lot of fans are skeptical about pretty or whether or not he is the guy.
06:46So kind of break this game down for us, Baldy, because it felt like a tale of two halves for
06:50Brock Purdy. Yeah. I mean, look, it's a little uneven. He's obviously missed some throws that
06:55we think he should make. You know, when he gets a clean pocket and his feet are set and he's
07:00sailing a ball here or there, he's a little bit behind some guys. And, you know, he's,
07:05you know, you throw seven interceptions, you know, in the first, you know, eight games,
07:10that's never going to sit too well with anybody, even if they're not all your fault. But he hasn't
07:15been stick accurate the way I think we have seen him in the past. He's not, but he's still getting
07:20the ball down the field. He's still averaging, you know, way over eight and a half yards in attempt.
07:25And anybody that's eight and a half or higher is, you know, you're, you're getting, you're getting
07:30good, whether it's, you know, catch and run or whether it's deep throws, whatever it is.
07:34I mean, you're getting explosive plays in the offense and they're getting still,
07:38they're still getting a lot of explosive plays in the offense as a passing game right now.
07:42And that's part of, you know, and you know, it's not like in Philadelphia, they don't really
07:47throw the ball over the middle of the field, but he's asked to throw the ball over the middle of
07:50the field a lot. And those are a lot of people. Those are kind of dangerous throws, especially
07:55if you're not Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, you know, Joe Burrow, you're six foot five,
07:59and you're looking over the defense, you're, you're a little challenged like he is.
08:04I think that, you know, I think he, I think he's played better and I think he can be more consistent.
08:09And so, you know, that's what I would look for on the second half. Now I remember last year at
08:15this time, they had lost three in a row and you know, before the buy, and then they came out of
08:20the buy and they look like a completely focused team. And I, you know, they, they, you know,
08:25they'll be in Tampa next week. I'm going to be there announcing that game. I'm looking forward
08:29to it, but he's going to see a defense that's going to blitz them a lot and different type
08:33of blitzes blitzes. You don't normally see a lot of combination blitzes, safety linebacker,
08:41slot defender safety. Like you see a lot of combination pressures. And so I want to see
08:45how they, they kind of pick those up and how he handles that. I'm looking at these two young
08:50safeties Malik Mustafa and Jair Brown. And I thought they played really well. I know there
08:55was some mistackles and, and they're coming flying in trying to make huge plays. Look,
09:01Bob Sanders is one of the great players of all time, but like in terms of a small guy who is
09:06just going to run through someone's soul, Malik Mustafa squares guys up. It reminds me of shades
09:12of a guy like Bob Sanders. That's not who I'm saying that he is. Cause that's an unfair comp,
09:16but this guy's a ball player. And then Jair Brown seems to be really coming into his own.
09:21How did you think the two young safeties played in tandem in this game?
09:26I thought they played great. I mean, you know, to get to the interception,
09:29um, you know, they're taking a ball away. Uh, you know, Mustafa reminds me of Buddha Baker.
09:35Like, um, you know, Buddha is just a Cobra, like the way that he just
09:39comes full speed at you. Like, there's just no hesitation. That's how Malik is.
09:44Um, I remember when TIG was coming out of Penn state, by the way, Penn state, Ohio state,
09:52but, uh, but, you know, I remember when I was doing some breakdowns of, uh, Jair coming out
09:57of Penn state, his head coach hit me up. And, you know, because he was, I want my safeties to
10:03take the ball away. And that's what he did at Penn state, you know, between interceptions
10:07and fumble recoveries, he was a ball machine and you can't get enough of those types of guys
10:13on the field. And so, you know, it was, it was good to, you know, he had good range on that
10:18interception. Um, and so I feel like the more he plays, the more he sees, the more angles,
10:24the better angles he's going to take. And I think he's going to start timing things up to
10:29take the ball away at a, at a better rate right now, especially after that last game.
10:33Yeah. But I'm a little ticked off about that. Ohio state game nine in the morning, man. It's
10:37too early for a game like that, man. That needs to be prime time, other lights, black, white out
10:42for Penn state with those duties. I, nine in the morning, man, it's too much intensity for
10:46nine in the morning, man. Anyway, uh, don't get those college coaches started on that.
10:50They're already, they've been, they've been kind of bitching about that all week right now.
10:55There was no kickoffs. Yeah. And those new kickoffs too much, but too early, man. It's
10:59we'll be up for it, but it's like, damn, you gotta, you can't give me a 1230 kick anyway.
11:03Um, back to the diners and I gotta get his guy more credit.
11:08Nick Bosa in these prime time games, the last three games, we bet for him to step up.
11:12And I think Nick Bosa has stepped up in a major, major way. He's been a one man record
11:16career in that defensive line, whether it's getting pressure on a quarterback, whether it's
11:20him in a run game, I thought Nick Bosa has been exceptional these last three weeks, Baldy.
11:27Well, I do too. I do too. He has like, um, he's got this conservation of movement. He only
11:33does, he doesn't do anything as strangers and he is mixing things up. He's been excellent in the
11:39run game. Um, but he's, he's just, you know, his, his ability to still turn the corner,
11:44stay on his feet right now. It's as good as it's ever been. His pursuit of the ball
11:49is as good as it's ever been. He's affecting these throws. Like, you know, the interception,
11:54um, you know, he, he, he kisses Dak Prescott. I mean, he's got his head right in his chest
11:59when he's trying to throw that football right there. I mean, he had a big part of that.
12:04Um, he's, he's playing great. He's playing really, really well right now. And so
12:07Okuomu played really well. I thought Malik Collins, I think Gibbons has given him good snaps.
12:13So, you know, that's going to be a big part of the second half push is, you know, what kind of depth
12:18do they have in the defensive line? Does Nick have to play more snaps than you want him to?
12:23If you're trying to get to the post season, it's just one of those factors right now.
12:27Speaker 3 If you had to add a piece to this
12:29Snyder's team Baldy, would it be a D tackle D in, or would it be another white receiver?
12:34Speaker 4 I would go defensive line. You know,
12:38maybe a guy that you remember, um, like when they had like, um, uh, Arden here, you know,
12:44like I thought he was a really good key. I got a guy that could be versatile rush inside,
12:49outside like that. He's gone on and it's at a really good career after he left.
12:54But I thought a guy like Arden key, um, that type of a player, maybe not a starter someplace,
13:00maybe a rotational player. Like I'd be calming teams right now that they're not giving those
13:05guys away. They cost, you know, they, they cause some collateral, um, some draft capital, but
13:10I'd be looking to add depth to the defensive line right now.
13:13Yeah. I mean, it, it feels like they're, they're secondaries really young, but man,
13:17watching DeOmino Lenore make, make play after play. I mean, that guy's just, he's a great
13:22player. He's a fantastic player, man. The way he contorted his body on that interception and to
13:28land in bounds. I just, I love watching him play, but Baldy, I don't even want to ask you about the
13:33secondary. You were at the Washington game against the Chicago bears, correct? Yeah. So I watched
13:39that whole game. Jaden Daniels. So impressive for a variety of reasons. I was actually impressed
13:44with the bears defense at times, but at the end of that game, and we were talking about sports
13:48karma, Bontemps, and I, we're going to get into it in a little bit here, but I see a lot of kids,
13:52they get to second base now and they want to do the celebrating or whatever.
13:56And they take their foot off the bag. They get tagged. You know what I mean? Premature celebration.
14:01I have never in my life seen what that safety was doing. Number 29 for the bears. And then
14:07all the videos that everyone's posting right now, I mean, Hey, walk us through the whole thing.
14:12You're there. You're at the game. And then just you finding out the angle, the video of him with
14:18his back to the play. Like there's just so many elements of it. Just go at it, man. Yeah. Well,
14:23that was Tyreek Stevenson. It was a starting corner. He's a good player. Really good player.
14:27Look, they, they did it right. I mean, the, the, the key honestly was Jaden because they,
14:34they threw a pass before that was six seconds to go. And he hit Terry McClaren for 13 yards
14:40that got him to the 48 yard line. So now he's at the 48. And now he has, you know,
14:46he's got a chance to reach the end zone, right? You got to get the ball into the end zone.
14:50If you're doing it from 65 yards away, that might be a little hard to get to the end zone,
14:55but he held the ball for 12 and a half seconds and his, his eyes were down the field, but he needed
15:01to get his receivers the time to get down the field. So he's got his eyes up the whole time.
15:07It's an instinct. He's, he's eluding the rush of Jacob Martin, you know, a couple of different
15:12DeMarcus Walker, a couple of different guys. And then he, he launches it and, you know,
15:18Stevenson, I think was going to bat it down. And in the midair, he got hit by all the other
15:23bodies that were in the air and the ball didn't get, didn't tip back to Noah Brown.
15:28But, you know, I was talking to Jayden Daniels before the game,
15:33they came over and he was just like, I was just checking it in. Cause it was really questionable
15:36whether he was going to play with these ribs. And I just asked him like, you know, there was never
15:40a doubt, right? Jayden, he was never a baldy. I go, did you get enough work in this week?
15:44I got enough to be sharp today. The guy ran a no offense, the whole game, he called every single
15:49play at the, at the line of scrimmage. All right. And that's against a defense that came into the
15:55game. Number one in the NFL with a opposing quarterback rating. And he called the entire
16:01game at the line of scrimmage. Wow. He called out to Mike, every play he caught, he, he, uh,
16:07the play, you know, came in from cliff Kingsbury. They didn't huddle up one time the whole day.
16:12The kid has unbelievable poise. You know, the hell Mary play where he says Chicago did
16:19everything right. I saw a breakdown the week before Detroit against Minnesota.
16:23Minnesota was a tip to the mail, hell Mary down. And Detroit said to hell with it. We're rushing
16:29five. We're going to put pressure on you so you can get the ball out quick. So is that going to
16:33be a new trend in the NFL? And he's held, Mary said, instead of dropping back seven and eight
16:38and giving the quarterbacks all the time in the world to just throw it up and something fluky
16:41happens, maybe we'll just rush five or six. What's the hell out of them? Make them get,
16:45make them get the ball out. The hair is quick. What do you, what would you prefer?
16:49I want more rush. Like he was there, but he's just fine. Well,
16:53Jane Daniels is not running 52 yards. Like it doesn't make any sense. Like give me four or
16:58five rushes. Plus I'm taking my tallest, most athletic player. And I'm, I'm, I'm basically
17:04Gardner in like I, you know, if I had Julius Peppers, if I had Montez sweat, like I'm putting
17:10a guy six foot six or taller and I'm putting them at center field. And when the ball's in the air,
17:15I'm going to be a big, strong guy that can jump. And I'm going to have him bat the ball down.
17:20Like I'm going to have him spike it. Like I'm not playing with defensive backs back there.
17:24Like what, what's the point of putting a five foot nine defensive back in the end zone?
17:28Like they're just going to get, you know, Al Lazard caught the, the hail Mary from
17:35five. Like, you know, I'm one of the guys that are, I'm on a frontline basketball player in
17:40the end zone right now. And I want a five man rush. How does the guy Stevenson? I mean,
17:47how do you, if you're a teammate of his, like, Hey, look at through the film and everything.
17:50I mean, how, how do you address this? What happened, Joe? What happened? So the bears,
17:56they had an unbelievable fan base there. Like they must've had 15,000 bear fans there. So they
18:00just scored the go ahead touchdown. Right? So the bear fans are making all the noise.
18:05So they're like lining the rim of the stadium. And after they scored some
18:09commander fans started to leave. So he's like, look, I'm not absolving him here,
18:14but he's playing to the Chicago bears fans that it feels like, like my fans are here.
18:20I'm going to let them know we're knocked us down. We're going to win the game. So
18:23it looks terrible what they said, but I was in there, you know, I was on the field
18:27two, two and a half hours before kickoff. It was all bear fans. Like they came and they traveled.
18:33And I was like, literally it must've been 15,000. Now they got drowned out because
18:38the game was so exciting and Jade was so good. And, you know, they, they may know. So whatever,
18:42but, um, it was, that's all I think the kid was doing. I don't want to kill the kid,
18:47but I'll be honest with you real quick, 30 seconds or less. Traverse where we got a question from a
18:51fan. A lot of people have questions about Traverse ward. What have you seen on him on film recently?
18:56Is he still bagged up? Baldy? We've got about 30 seconds. What's your thoughts on Woody Ward?
19:00I mean, he's highly competitive kid. Like you want that guy on, you know, against your best
19:04receiver, let him match up. He's going to get a week to rest up. Um, you know, everybody should
19:08come back. George Debo. I still don't know how Debo got off, uh, you know, the pneumonia bed
19:14on Monday and played like he'd started a game played like he did. But I think, uh, I want
19:18Traverse on my, in my second year, Renardo's coming on. Like he made him good stick on, uh,
19:23you know, on the fumble. They're going into the end zone. Um, I, I, I like the way that they're
19:28playing. I like the aggressiveness. Are you going to have to challenge these receivers
19:31the second half of the season? No doubt. It should be a lot of fun. Body. Where are you at this
19:35weekend? I'm in Philly, Jacksonville and Philly this week. Oh, the Jacks. Oh man. Philly quietly
19:41are playing some good football. They're they're they're coming along here. Baldy. We'll talk to
19:46you next Tuesday, brother. Keep up the great work. Yep. Thanks guys. Anytime Brian Baldinger here on
19:52the river Island's gas light. Don't forget. He was also also brought to you by our proud partner,
19:57go to state server to Bay area for three generations.
