00:00One of the most common cases of breast cancer in South East Asia is the Philippines

00:04according to the World Health Organization.

00:06This is also the second reason why many women in the country are pregnant.

00:11This October is called Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

00:14Joining us now is Dr. Kelvin Ken Lee Yu, a radiation oncologist.

00:22Good evening. Thank you very much.

00:26Doc, why are breast cancer cases high in the Philippines?

00:29Is it related to our gender, location, or lifestyle?

00:33Actually, worldwide, the most common cancer among women is breast cancer.

00:39I think that's why the rates of breast cancer are high here in the Philippines.

00:43I think this is also reflected in our improving healthcare.

00:46Diagnostic tests have become more accessible

00:49so that we can detect these kinds of diseases earlier.

00:53So, it's because of the available information.

00:57How does a person get breast cancer, especially a woman?

01:01Is it inherited?

01:03Can a woman or a man get breast cancer?

01:07Yes. Actually, anyone can get breast cancer.

01:10Breast cancer comes from random mutations or abnormal changes in our breast tissue.

01:18What happens is that our body has a normal ability to stop the proliferation

01:24but because of these errors, the cancer comes out.

01:27So, maybe around 10 to 15 percent has a component that is proliferating,

01:33but the majority of the breast cancers just come out on their own.

01:37But can lifestyle and stress also contribute? Is that why the cases are also increasing?

01:42Yes. Lifestyle is one of the risk factors for breast cancer.

01:48That's why usually, if you have an active lifestyle, you have a lower chance of developing breast cancer.

01:54And another thing is, usually, if you're a bit fat or have a high BMI,

02:01you're more prone to have breast cancer.

02:03Doc, I've been believing for a long time that if someone has a tumor or trauma in their breast,

02:12can it be one of the reasons for breast cancer?

02:19Yes. So, actually, this is a myth.

02:22The trauma or the tumor is not the cause of breast cancer.

02:27Actually, we often associate this with the fact that if the breast has a tumor,

02:33it's painful and we become conscious.

02:35We cover it up, we do a check-up.

02:38That's when we discover that there's a tumor.

02:41But in fact, that tumor has been there for a long time and we just don't notice it.

02:46So, doctor, is it right to start taking a look at doctors to know if there are tumors growing?

02:52They say, at least once a year, mammograms and breast ultrasounds should be done at least once a year.

02:58At what age should it be done?

03:00Yes. According to breast screening recommendations,

03:03women should go under the mammogram every year starting at the age of 45.

03:09Women or husbands?

03:11Actually, any woman at the age of 45.

04:43Actually, you can go to any doctor just for the screening.

04:57In the breast examination, how often should it be done?

05:01Is it every day? Once a week? Once a month?

05:04In the breast examination, there is no recommended time.

05:07But maybe you can do it at least every three months.

05:13You don't need any instruments there.

05:15What about the women, doc, who are pregnant or giving birth?

05:19Is it possible for the cancer cells to get a baby?

05:22For example, if the mother detects that she is pregnant,

05:27So, breast cancer is not subject to breastfeeding.
