One of the most common cases of breast cancer in South East Asia is the Philippines
00:04
according to the World Health Organization.
00:06
This is also the second reason why many women in the country are pregnant.
00:11
This October is called Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
00:14
Joining us now is Dr. Kelvin Ken Lee Yu, a radiation oncologist.
00:20
Welcome to Dapat Alam Mo, Doc.
00:22
Good evening. Thank you very much.
00:24
Thank you very much, Doc, and welcome.
00:26
Doc, why are breast cancer cases high in the Philippines?
00:29
Is it related to our gender, location, or lifestyle?
00:33
Actually, worldwide, the most common cancer among women is breast cancer.
00:39
I think that's why the rates of breast cancer are high here in the Philippines.
00:43
I think this is also reflected in our improving healthcare.
00:46
Diagnostic tests have become more accessible
00:49
so that we can detect these kinds of diseases earlier.
00:53
So, it's because of the available information.
00:57
How does a person get breast cancer, especially a woman?
01:01
Is it inherited?
01:03
Can a woman or a man get breast cancer?
01:07
Yes. Actually, anyone can get breast cancer.
01:10
Breast cancer comes from random mutations or abnormal changes in our breast tissue.
01:18
What happens is that our body has a normal ability to stop the proliferation
01:24
but because of these errors, the cancer comes out.
01:27
So, maybe around 10 to 15 percent has a component that is proliferating,
01:33
but the majority of the breast cancers just come out on their own.
01:37
But can lifestyle and stress also contribute? Is that why the cases are also increasing?
01:42
Yes. Lifestyle is one of the risk factors for breast cancer.
01:48
That's why usually, if you have an active lifestyle, you have a lower chance of developing breast cancer.
01:54
And another thing is, usually, if you're a bit fat or have a high BMI,
02:01
you're more prone to have breast cancer.
02:03
Doc, I've been believing for a long time that if someone has a tumor or trauma in their breast,
02:12
can it be one of the reasons for breast cancer?
02:19
Yes. So, actually, this is a myth.
02:22
The trauma or the tumor is not the cause of breast cancer.
02:27
Actually, we often associate this with the fact that if the breast has a tumor,
02:33
it's painful and we become conscious.
02:35
We cover it up, we do a check-up.
02:38
That's when we discover that there's a tumor.
02:41
But in fact, that tumor has been there for a long time and we just don't notice it.
02:46
So, doctor, is it right to start taking a look at doctors to know if there are tumors growing?
02:52
They say, at least once a year, mammograms and breast ultrasounds should be done at least once a year.
02:58
At what age should it be done?
03:00
Yes. According to breast screening recommendations,
03:03
women should go under the mammogram every year starting at the age of 45.
03:09
Women or husbands?
03:11
Actually, any woman at the age of 45.
03:14
Now, there are other women who really want to be more careful.
03:17
We can start as early as 40 years old.
03:20
Wow, 40 years old.
03:21
Anyway, doc, aside from the indication that breast cancer is possible,
03:26
is it possible to use self-breast examination?
03:32
Yes. So, during the early stages, when our breast cancer is at an early stage,
03:38
most of the time, there are no other symptoms,
03:40
aside from the fact that you have a thick tumor.
03:42
This is also the main reason why most of the time,
03:46
it is just neglected or neglected because there is no feeling.
03:49
So, it's very easy, as doc said, to be afraid.
03:51
When we sleep, we are lying down.
03:53
Is this the best time to be afraid of women?
03:59
Yes. So, in regards to the timing,
04:01
the best time to have a clinical breast exam is after the menstruation, the week after.
04:07
Oh, okay.
04:08
And then, of course, the first step is to face the mirror.
04:11
Check if there is any difference in appearance.
04:14
What is the difference in appearance?
04:16
Is it a wound? What is it like?
04:18
Usually, it's like a shape.
04:20
Sometimes, the shape is different.
04:22
Sometimes, in the nipple area, the nipple moves backwards.
04:25
Ah, okay.
04:26
Or sometimes, there is a discharge.
04:28
So, if you see something like that in your breast and in your breast milk,
04:33
go straight to the doctor.
04:34
Go straight to the doctors.
04:36
Yes, doc.
04:37
What kind of doctors?
04:38
Are these OB-GYNs?
04:40
What kind of doctors can you check upon?
04:43
Actually, you can go to any doctor just for the screening.
04:47
Even general physicians, those in the health center,
04:51
they are usually our first line.
04:54
And they are the ones who request screening tests.
04:57
In the breast examination, how often should it be done?
05:01
Is it every day? Once a week? Once a month?
05:04
In the breast examination, there is no recommended time.
05:07
But maybe you can do it at least every three months.
05:10
Oh, every three months.
05:11
Just at home, right?
05:12
Yes, just at home.
05:13
You don't need any instruments there.
05:15
What about the women, doc, who are pregnant or giving birth?
05:19
Is it possible for the cancer cells to get a baby?
05:22
For example, if the mother detects that she is pregnant,
05:24
she will breastfeed.
05:25
Can that be transferred to the baby?
05:27
So, breast cancer is not subject to breastfeeding.
05:31
Okay.
05:32
Just in case, for example, the child who breastfed grew up.
05:35
Eventually, he also developed breast cancer.
05:37
Yes.
05:38
Most likely, the cause of that is maybe they have a child.
05:41
They have a child.
05:42
That is more prone.
05:43
Yes.
05:44
But it is really not subject to breastfeeding.
05:46
This is for men.
05:47
You might think it's only for women.
05:49
Men, listen to me.
05:51
Can breast cancer occur, doc?
05:55
Yes.
05:56
Because men also have breast tissue.
05:59
So, even though this is very rare,
06:01
it is possible for men to develop breast cancer.
06:04
So, can men also do self-breast examinations?
06:07
Yes.
06:08
Actually, self-breast examinations for men are more effective
06:11
because we don't have fat here.
06:13
That's easier.
06:14
It's easier.
06:15
So, if you have a small lump there or a bump,
06:17
it can be easily removed.
06:19
Yes.
06:20
So, men, you know what to do when you go home tonight.
06:23
Okay.
06:24
Thank you very much, Dr. Kelvin Kenliu,
06:27
for inviting us to this interview.
06:30
Let's talk about health and safety with Susan Tayo.
06:35
Doc, thank you.
