00:00Voting is underway in Moldova as citizens decide on European Union accession and elect

00:07their new president.

00:11Moldovans are voting in a constitutional referendum that could change the long-term future of

00:16their country.

00:19Citizens are being asked whether they support an amendment of the constitution with a view

00:23to accession to the European Union after the process was formally opened last June.

00:31At the same time, Moldova is electing its president, with the incumbent Maya Sandu leading

00:36the polls.

00:39By 1pm, turnout for the presidential election was at 25.6%, higher than in 2020.

00:49President Sandu voted in Chisinau, where a number of citizens gathered at the polling

00:53station chanting, Moldova, let's vote.

00:58Turnout must be over 33% for the referendum to be considered valid, and 50% plus one of

01:05the responses must be a yes for the constitution to be amended.

01:56It comes as a Russian strike on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia left 10 local residents

02:01wounded on Saturday evening, according to the national police.

03:08On Friday, French Prime Minister Michel Barnier said that firefighters and other rescuers

03:13have been involved in roughly 2,300 operations so far.

03:21G7 defence ministers have expressed their concern for the safety of UN peacekeepers

03:26in Lebanon as the security situation continues to deteriorate.

03:31In a joint statement after their first meeting in Naples, the minister said that the protection

03:36of peacekeepers is incumbent upon all parties to a conflict.

03:40UNIFIL was established by the Security Council in 1978 to restore security in southern Lebanon.

03:47It comprises 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 countries, including 16 EU nations, and regularly patrols

03:54the UN-drawn border between Lebanon and Israel.

03:57On Friday, UNIFIL said it was maintaining its positions despite warnings from the IDF

04:02to move away.

04:03Earlier this month, UNIFIL said an Israeli tank fired on its headquarters in Nakoura,

04:08knocking down an observation tower and injuring two peacekeepers.

04:13Israel has accused UNIFIL of being ineffective in halting Hezbollah's military activities.

04:21Kenyan athletes have recorded a double triumph at the first edition of the Rome Half Marathon,

04:26which took place on Sunday morning on the central streets of Italy's capital.
