Federal Opposition announced $5 billion election pledge to fast track housing developments

As we have just heard the housing crisis is a key issue for voters. In Canberra today, Peter Dutton announced the federal opposition's $5 billion election pledge - which would see fast tracking of new housing developments.

00:25A scheme to break the infrastructure bottleneck and build 500,000 new homes welcomed by industry.

00:33We cannot build until infrastructure is in place.

00:36A real shot in the arm for the great Australian dream.

00:40It complements previous Coalition commitments to increase housing supply by slashing migration,

00:45cutting international student numbers and temporarily stopping foreign investors purchasing

00:51existing homes in Australia.

00:54But it hasn't taken long for the government to write off the new policy as a con job,

00:59claiming the Coalition would spend less overall on housing than a re-elected Albanese government.

01:05Peter Dutton's taking with one hand and giving with the other, it's a card trick.

01:09The Coalition has this week confirmed if elected it would walk away from Labor's commitment

01:13to build 1.2 million homes this decade, which they've labelled an unrealistic pipe dream.

01:20They're not going to get within CUI of that so-called target or aspiration.

01:26The Prime Minister's saying if the Coalition was serious about helping aspiring homeowners,

01:31they'd pass his housing legislation.

01:33Peter Dutton is blocking legislation along with the Greens that's in the Senate and been

01:39there now for over 200 days.

01:42The Greens and the Coalition have this week sought to capitalise on the Prime Minister's

01:46decision to purchase a high-end home during a housing crisis.

01:51It's too early to tell if voters will punish the PM for that one.

01:55What is clear though is that housing is shaping up as a hot issue, with a federal election

02:00just around the corner.
