Opposition leader spruiking tax-deductible mortgage interest scheme

Yesterday Coalition Peter Dutton announced a plan to allow first-time buyers of newly built homes to be able to deduct interest payments on up to $650,000 of their mortgage from their homes. Peter Dutton is in Brisbane today to sell this new tax deduction on his campaign trail.

00:00Peter Dutton's campaign has taken us to the Brisbane seat of Ryan.

00:05It's one of three that the Greens picked up in the 2022 election

00:09and it's something that Peter Dutton wants to win back.

00:11It's also the neighbouring electorate to his own seat of Dixon,

00:15another seat held on a very small margin.

00:17And here, of course, the focus is all about housing.

00:19We're on the urban fringe of Brisbane where there is a lot of new housing

00:22and more right behind me being built.

00:25It's houses like these on lots like these

00:27that Peter Dutton hopes to entice first-home buyers to buy

00:30with a new plan to make their mortgage interest payments tax-deductible

00:34for the first few years after they own their homes.

00:37It's been controversial with economists,

00:38but it's a message targeted squarely at first-home buyers in seats like Ryan.
