Storm Babette is not with us yet and for some it won't arrive until Thursday, but
00:05
when it does arrive it's going to bring a lot of wet weather. Heavy and
00:09
persistent rain between now and the weekend is likely to cause some
00:13
disruption. We have a Met Office amber warning in place across parts of
00:17
eastern Scotland, but many yellow warnings in place for a combination of
00:21
rain and winds. Please check out the Met Office app and website for more details
00:26
of those warnings to see if you will be affected. Let's take a look at the bigger
00:30
picture because here is that storm system slowly tracking its way
00:34
northwards across the Bay of Biscay picking up moisture as it does so.
00:38
Ahead of it we do have a set of weather fronts bringing some cloud and rain across
00:42
parts of Northern Ireland as we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday
00:45
morning. A few showers for western parts of Wales and in southern England later
00:49
in the night, but for many it'll be a dry night. The breeze continuing to
00:53
strengthen and that will make for a milder night certainly across the north
00:57
compared to recent nights. Temperatures in many towns and cities starting in
01:00
double digits on Wednesday in stark contrast to a couple of mornings ago.
01:05
So it won't be a cold start to Wednesday but it will be a cloudy start for many, a breezy
01:10
start still for most of the day. Southern Scotland, northern England, eastern
01:15
England will be dry and bright, but increasingly further south will start to
01:19
feel the effects of Storm Babette with a few showers over Wales in the south
01:22
initially turning into heavier, more persistent rain across southern England
01:27
especially late in the day. A lot of spray, a lot of surface water on the roads
01:31
and a strengthening wind here too. We'll also see that rain pepping up across
01:36
Northern Ireland and that's going to last through Wednesday night and into
01:39
Thursday. The breeze will be noticeable especially on some North Sea coast, but
01:44
temperatures actually ticking up with a bit of brightness into the mid or even
01:48
high teens across the south, but it won't feel all that mild here with the
01:51
wind and the rain. As I said, that rain will be getting heavier and once it sets
01:56
in across Northern Ireland through Wednesday it could last most of the
01:59
night and even into Thursday. And the rain for England and Wales is slowly
02:03
edging its way northwards and this band of rain becoming slow-moving, that's one
02:08
of the problems leading to the persistent nature of the rain through
02:11
Wednesday night and into Thursday with the winds feeding in from the North Sea
02:16
just exacerbating the rainfall. It's all from Storm Babette which moves in then
02:21
and slowly pushes northwards. Notice there's a big area of high pressure
02:25
across Scandinavia, so as the storm system pushes up against that it becomes
02:29
even more slow-moving and that is one of the problems. That's why that rainfall is
02:33
just going to build up and build up particularly across parts of eastern
02:36
Scotland as we go through Thursday and even into Friday and the rain continuing
02:42
further south as well. It might start to push back further south as we head into the
02:46
weekend, but low pressure is still nearby. As I said, we have an amber warning in
02:50
place across eastern Scotland, but other yellow rain warnings and a wind warning
02:56
across parts of Scotland. There's isobars pinching together, getting very
02:59
gusty across the Northwest Highlands especially. So do check out the Met Office
03:04
app and website for more details on those warnings. But we can see why eastern
03:08
Scotland's got that amber warning in place with the winds feeding in here,
03:11
just the hills here, the rain really building up, 100, 150 millimetres,
03:15
possibly 200 millimetres of rain falling by the time it starts to ease. And
03:20
further south, there'll be plenty of heavy outbreaks of showery rain as well.
03:23
Further south from that, the winds will be a little lighter and there will be some
03:27
brighter spells, even a bit of sunshine coming through and temperatures in the
03:31
south, 18, maybe 19 Celsius, but obviously feeling cooler with the wind and the
03:35
rain further north and east. That rain continuing, as I said, into Friday and
03:40
perhaps into the weekend too. So please do stay up to date with those weather
03:43
warnings and stay up to date with everything from the Met Office by
03:47
following us on social media.
