Hello and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the weekend. Plenty to talk about once
00:05
again this weekend. Unsettled weather in place across the UK. Initially on Friday and the
00:10
start of Saturday, it will be wet weather that is the main concern. Then once the persistent
00:16
rain is out of the way during Saturday morning, our attention turns to the strengthening winds
00:21
Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and the start of Sunday. But after the early persistent
00:27
wet weather, well actually it will turn much brighter. So it's not a complete wash out
00:31
through the weekend. There will be sunny spells combined with frequent wintry showers. Like
00:36
I say, a lot going on this weekend. But it's all down to one area of low pressure. Storm
00:43
Jorge, named by the Spanish Met Service because of impacts likely across parts of Spain. It
00:49
will also bring significant impacts to Ireland because of the wind and initially some wet
00:55
weather Friday into the start of the weekend, especially across western parts of the UK.
01:00
Now once these weather fronts are out of the way, the skies do brighten but the winds pick
01:05
up Saturday afternoon. This squeeze on the isobars bringing strengthening winds, gales
01:09
through Northern Ireland, Irish Sea coast, Southern Scotland, much of England and Wales
01:15
Saturday night and into the start of Sunday. It will also drag in cold air but initially,
01:21
well any snowfall really confined early Friday to north-east England, southern Scotland and
01:26
then it's the wet weather that is of most concern Friday into the start of Saturday.
01:30
Some very heavy rainfall, Northern Ireland, parts of western England as well as Wales
01:35
and the rainfall once again as in previous episodes of wet weather, heaviest over western
01:41
hills. 20-30mm widely across Northern Ireland, western parts of England as well as Wales
01:47
and the risk of more than that over some higher ground and especially South Wales, an area
01:53
of significant concern at the moment because of the already saturated conditions here.
02:00
The worst of the rainfall moves through during Saturday morning and after that wet start
02:05
across eastern parts of England, some heavy rainfall for a time. Skies do brighten, the
02:10
sun comes through from the west but also we're going to see showers spreading in. So breathe
02:15
in between systems and then some heavy downpours returning into much of Scotland, Northern
02:20
Ireland, western parts of England as well as Wales and with cold air pushing in behind
02:24
the early rainfall, we're expecting some snow out of these showers, mainly over the higher
02:29
ground above around 300m or so but also some bright weather in between the showers. However,
02:35
it will feel cold in that strengthening wind, temperatures by Saturday afternoon around
02:41
5-9c but on the wind significantly colder than that. That wind continues to strengthen
02:47
during Saturday night, a swathe of gales pushing into Northern Ireland, Irish Sea coast, Cardigan
02:53
Bay coast there as well as much of inland parts of England, Wales, southern Scotland.
02:58
50mph gusts likely fairly widely, 60 or even 70 around some particularly exposed coasts
03:04
and hills. A blustery start then to Sunday, that wind could cause impacts, yellow warnings
03:10
in force for that but also we're going to see further showers, especially rain showers
03:16
for southern parts of Wales, southern counties of England and further north for the rest
03:20
of Wales into Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland we're likely to see some
03:24
perhaps sleet and hail showers to relatively low levels, snow over the hills accumulating
03:29
above around 300m. However, central and eastern England brightening up through Sunday, sunny
03:35
spells predominantly and just one or two showers here. It will feel cold though again
03:40
on Sunday with that brisk wind blowing, the wind moderating through the day but nevertheless
03:45
if you're out in the wind it's not going to feel like 7-11c, it's going to feel much colder
03:50
than that. So plenty to watch out for over the weekend and of course you can stay up
03:56
to date with all the very latest by following us on social media, heading to the website
03:59
and downloading the app. Bye bye.
