Concerns over yellow lines being added to Medway City Estate

Traders have raised concerns over proposals to add double yellow lines on parts of the Medway City Estate amid fears it will further drive away customers.

00:00It's just gone 5pm on the Medway City estate. Many of the 5,000 workers are clocking off

00:08for the day, but they won't be home any time soon. The influx of traffic often grinds the

00:14industrial estate to a standstill. Part cars effectively creating single lanes is the issue

00:20according to Medway Council, so they're now looking at putting yellow lines in to stop

00:24this.

00:25But how will impact clients parking for the Box City Retail Complex according to businesses

00:30there? They say there's often nowhere else to go, and this tattoo studio is concerned

00:35about what impact that might have on their custom.

00:38It's awful, I mean it's already bad enough as it is, like without that main road or place

00:43to park on, and I don't just mean for Box City, I mean everywhere around here is really

00:47going to struggle. If it gets to that stage I'll probably, yeah, just have to get the

00:50train in and say to my clients to do the same or they're going to have to walk down, which

00:54is going to massively impact, you know, obviously clients and me.

00:59For the most part there will be time limited restrictions at rush hour, but this is one

01:03stretch where the council are putting double yellows in. This means a parking ticket can

01:08be issued at any time. It's to stop these lorries from parking back to back.

01:13It's at this cafe where some workers come together for lunch. Traffic chaos usually

01:19leads for small talk.

01:21It's shocking, it's always busy, it's chaos.

01:25It's really dangerous, especially lorries park along here, they're always bibbing.

01:30Yeah, and the cars try and pull out and then accidents nearly happen here all the time.

01:35So do they think enforcement will change that?

01:37Drive around and this car's on double lines as well.

01:39These double yellows are over there as it is, they still park there. So yeah, it's not

01:44going to, it's not going to help here, no.

01:47But council says these enforcement measures are as a result of feedback from locals.

01:52I'm afraid that, you know, the old adage is true, it's safety first. If it's the choice

01:58between making things slightly less convenient for individual businesses or individuals who

02:03have previously been able to park where they pleased versus making things safer for all

02:10road users, I will always err on the side of safety.

02:15Increasing yellow lines may clear the roads, but will businesses be right and will parking

02:21chaos become the new hot topic at this cafe?
