00:00Hello and welcome to Based in Kent. I'm Ronnie and this is the show that introduces you to original music artists from around the county.
00:23Each artist will be here with me in the studio talking about and performing their own original music. Today I'm joined by members of the indie rock band from Tunbridge Wells, Castan Island. Thanks for being here guys.
00:34So tell me a little bit about your band. So obviously we don't have the full set here today. Who are we missing on the couch?
00:40We're missing Ollie and Mick. Ollie's the guitarist and Mick's the drummer.
00:47And how did you guys come together to form Castan Island?
00:52So Tom isn't the original bassist. I quit music for about ten years and I stopped performing.
01:00So last year I decided I'm going to put an advert out and I came across an advert that Mick the drummer had put in online and I just basically contacted him and it just went from there.
01:12So they were a three piece and yeah I just slotted in and yeah and then Tom came along a little bit afterwards.
01:20Yeah my journey is quite funny really. I mean I played at home for pleasure, you know, for your own pleasure.
01:25And then one day I get a message from Ollie because I went to school with both Mick and Ollie.
01:30I said do you still play bass and sort of the rest is history now I'm here. So yeah.
01:34And how long have you guys been performing together now?
01:37Just over a year. About a year and three months?
01:39Yeah, just over a year.
01:41Amazing. So talk to me a little bit about the group's process of writing music. So obviously original music that's quite the process. How do you guys approach that task?
01:51So during my ten years I wrote a lot. So even though I wasn't performing or doing anything I did. I wrote hundreds of original tracks.
02:00Also the other lads had, they had some stuff as well. And I've also borrowed some of my older music and just basically reinvented it.
02:09So that's pretty much the process. I sort of write them on acoustic and then the guys add their sort of bits and pieces to it. So give us our sound.
02:19Amazing. Well I am so looking forward to hearing your sound. Your first song today is called You. Tell me a little bit about that one.
02:27So yeah, that's just, you's about sort of that special person that you've got. It doesn't matter what's happening around the world or in your personal life.
02:37There's always that someone that, you know, sort of guides you and is your sort of inspiration. So that's what it's about.
02:42Well I can't wait to hear it. Take it away.
02:44Now the day breaks and the mountains we face. And I can't help but look outside this window. A movie that we must live through. Big screen and all I see is you. Oh, when can't we all be like you? Why can't we all be like you?
03:13Why can't we all be like you? Why can't we all? Shakes and earthquakes put me in my place. And I can't help but look from the other side. You're so transparent that you'll see through. A million stars all I see is you.
03:41Oh, when can't we all be like you? Why can't we all be like you? Why can't we all be like you? Why can't we all be like you? Why can't we all?
03:59Oh, take your time, now you're out of your mind
04:05You're being just fine if you don't like
04:09It's your mental health, look up yourself
04:14Cause there's no one else
04:18Only you
04:23Why can't we walk with you?
04:29Only you
04:43Oh, why can't we all be like you?
04:49Why can't we all be like you?
04:54Oh, why can't we all be like you?
04:59Why can't we all be like you?
05:02Amazing, so you said that that was written about a special person, so is that a common theme
05:09for your songwriting, is you take from?
05:13Yeah, life experiences, yeah, a lot of it is, like I say, evolved through many years, sometimes
05:18they've been in different songs and I've sort of, yeah, just reworded or re-scripted them
05:23to fit with the other guys as well, so
05:25So the other guys give collaborative input?
05:28Yeah, they do, yeah, we don't have any songs that really sort of sound the same
05:33We've got, Mick uses an electric drum kit for instance and sample pads sometimes
05:38So there's some songs that are a bit more trappy or more acoustic-y or, yeah, it's kind of
05:45We like to
05:47We have our own sort of stamp on our own music
05:48Yeah, we like to mix it up
05:49Yeah
05:50Yeah, keep it, keep it fun
05:52Ever-changing
05:53Yeah
05:53Kind of thing, okay, I like that
05:56So when you guys are all together performing, how does that vibe differentiate compared
06:03to rehearsals, let's say?
06:05Yeah, when we're performing, it's a lot different, so in rehearsals, we do like to have a laugh
06:12We are quite, yeah
06:15We like to have a little bit of laugh and a little mess around in the studio
06:18Yeah, we're a bit more serious when we play live
06:20Yeah, it's a bit more well
06:22Oh, okay
06:23It's a good laugh
06:24I feel like with some groups that it would kind of be the opposite
06:27Yeah, not for us, no
06:28No?
06:29Okay, that's interesting
06:30The banter is really bad
06:31No, the guys are great, we don't ever take it too far, but we just get on so well
06:36It makes the music good, doesn't it?
06:38Yeah
06:39When we have a good laugh and nothing else we're enjoying it more
06:40Yeah
06:41The music's good
06:42And then, yeah, gig day is sort of game face
06:45And sort of, yeah, get into the zone
06:47Oh, okay, gotta be in that zone
06:49Yeah, gotta get into the game and sort of, yeah, focus and, yeah, go from there
06:53Nice, okay, so you're very passionate, very, very serious about the craft and the art
06:57Yeah
06:58I like that
06:59Yeah
07:00No, that's great
07:01Definitely
07:02So, your next song for us today is called Lost
07:03Give me a little context to that
07:05This is purely a song about my brother
07:08Sort of, yeah, bless him, he's a great guy
07:13He sort of reminds me of someone that you know, like you've always got a friend that's always sort of left behind or someone you know that's sort of still living in the past, bless him
07:24So, yeah, he's a great guy, but it's always sort of about him moving on and growing up and sort of moving along with everyone else, that's what it's about
07:33Oh, okay, interesting
07:35Well, I can't wait to hear the story of him, so take it away when you're ready
07:39Thank you
07:40Thank you
07:41Thank you
07:42Thank you
07:43Thank you
07:44He says, yeah, but so what? He don't talk too much He does tons of cool stuff
08:13His T-shirts is launched When it's work or no play, he has gone astray
08:23The grind of nine to five Keeps the dream alive
08:28He drinks, cause he drinks He drinks like he could die
08:32Tales of the weekend warrior Now's your time to shine
08:41If you don't settle down Then you'll never leave this town another We can't worry our love
08:51If you don't settle down Then you'll never leave this town another We can't worry our love
09:03If you don't settle down Then you'll never leave this town another We can't worry our love
09:10If you don't settle down Then you'll never leave this town another We can't worry our love
09:16We can't worry our love
09:18We can't worry our love
09:19It's the end of the week Pistols on his feet He's got calloused hearts He loves indie past When it's work and no play He has gone astray
09:38A square peg in a round hole
09:40A square peg in a round hole Won't define him no
09:44He drinks, cause he drinks, cause he drinks, cause he drinks Like he could die
09:48Tales of the weekend warrior Now's your time to shine
09:56Drinks, cause he drinks, cause he drinks Like he could die
09:58Drinks, cause he drinks, cause he drinks Like he could die
10:00Tales of the weekend warrior
10:04Better luck next time If you don't settle down
10:12You'll never leave this town another We can't worry our love
10:18We can't worry our love
10:20We can't worry our love
10:22Oh no, what's this now Your fear, the blame
10:26You touched the ground another We can't worry our love
10:32We can't worry our love
10:34We can't worry our love
10:36We can't worry our love
10:38We can't worry our love
10:40We can't worry our love
10:42We can't worry our love
10:44We can't worry our love
10:46We can't worry our love
10:48We can't worry our love
10:50We can't worry our love
10:52We can't worry our love
10:54We can't worry our love
10:56We can't worry our love
10:58We can't worry our love
11:00We can't worry our love
11:02If you don't settle down
11:15Then you'll never leave this town
11:18I know that we can't worry you're lost
11:23Oh no, what's this now?
11:28Your feet have barely touched the ground
11:31I know that we can't worry you're lost
11:35Hello and welcome back to Based in Kent
11:49where I am joined by members of the pop rock indie band
11:53Castan Island from Tumbridge Wells.
11:55Thanks for being here, guys.
11:57You're right.
11:57So now it's my favorite part of the show.
11:59It's the quick-fire question round game.
12:02A timer's going to come up on the monitor behind us.
12:04I'm so sorry you won't be able to see it.
12:05I won't see it.
12:06There's no pressure there, no intensity added.
12:09And it's just going to start counting down
12:10as I ask the first question.
12:12And if you both have an answer,
12:14if only one of you has an answer,
12:16no problem at all.
12:17It's just to get to know you guys a bit better as people
12:19rather than just your artist personas.
12:23No problem.
12:23Okay.
12:24So do you prefer live or recorded music?
12:28Live.
12:30Yep.
12:30Tea or coffee?
12:31Coffee.
12:32Coffee.
12:33Writing or performing music?
12:36Writing.
12:38Oh, performing.
12:40But then it starts with writing, doesn't it?
12:41So can I pick both?
12:44Sure.
12:44Both.
12:44There you go.
12:45The only rule here is to have an answer.
12:47It doesn't matter what it is.
12:49Definitely both.
12:49Winter or summer?
12:51Summer.
12:52Oh, okay.
12:53Some difference.
12:55Favorite song you've written so far?
12:58Lost.
12:59In the End, which we didn't perform today,
13:01but yeah, a song called In the End.
13:03Okay.
13:03Well, we'll have to go and check that out for ourselves.
13:06Morning or evening?
13:08Evening.
13:08Evening.
13:09Okay.
13:10First song you learned how to play?
13:13Street Spirit Fade Out, Radiohead.
13:16Damn it, Blink-182.
13:17Okay.
13:18Sweet or savoury?
13:21Savoury.
13:24Sweet.
13:25Yeah, to think about that one.
13:26Don't think about that one.
13:26Tough decision.
13:28I'm a big guy.
13:29No.
13:30First artist to inspire you?
13:34In me.
13:35Dave McPherson.
13:37Alex Turner, Arctic Monkeys.
13:38Oh, okay.
13:40Time alone or time with mates?
13:42Time with mates.
13:43Yeah, time with mates, yeah, definitely.
13:45Okay.
13:45Social butterflies.
13:46Yeah, definitely.
13:47Nice.
13:47I want to use it now, but yeah.
13:49I've got friends.
13:52Favourite gig you have attended?
13:57Arctic Monkeys, Finsbury Park.
13:59100%, yeah.
14:00Biffy Clyro, Cardiff Bay.
14:03Favourite fellow Kent musician?
14:09This is really funny.
14:10We don't really know many, do we?
14:12We don't.
14:12We don't.
14:13No.
14:14Unfortunately, we don't have one because we don't know many people.
14:16Oh, no.
14:17We just literally started out, so it's quite, it's all...
14:19There's another local band called The Fiery Lights that are really, really good that played
14:23local night last year.
14:24Quite fun to them.
14:24Okay, well, we will have to give them a look.
14:27And that very nicely took us to the end of time.
14:31So your next song for us today, Labyrinth.
14:33Okay, I feel like that title tells a little bit about it already, but give me some background
14:38on it.
14:39Again, it's more about feeling sort of trapped in my own head.
14:46That's basically the, in certain life, things that were going on at the time.
14:51Yeah, so that's what the lyric's about.
14:53Captured a moment probably about 10, 15 years ago.
14:56It was a bit of a bad place and sort of loads of things happened and, yeah, managed to sort
15:02of get out of it.
15:03But, yeah, it's about being trapped in your own head, in your own thought process.
15:07Well, I can't wait to hear that.
15:08Take it away.
15:09So there you were.
15:12I couldn't hold you in my arms.
15:15I keep falling apart again.
15:21I built you up.
15:23Then I just can't let you go.
15:26I can do this on my own.
15:33Don't you worry about a thing.
15:36It's about to get interesting.
15:38Inside the labyrinth of my mind.
15:41My mind.
15:42And if somehow you got in, you're about to take a swim.
15:49Inside the labyrinth of my mind.
15:52My mind.
15:53Something left behind.
15:57Take a van and you're so kind.
15:59If you be sick, then you will find.
16:03It's fine.
16:04It's no priority.
16:05It's no priority.
16:06It's just another number to me.
16:10It could be some part.
16:11Could have been some blood.
16:12Don't you worry about a thing.
16:13It's about to get interesting.
16:14Inside the labyrinth of my mind.
16:15My mind.
16:16Don't you worry about a thing
16:21It's about to get interesting
16:23Inside the labyrinth of my mind
16:26My mind
16:27And if somehow you got it
16:31You're about to sink your swim
16:34Inside the labyrinth of my mind
16:37My mind
16:38Is this all it takes
16:42Is it bends and breaks
16:45Is this all that it takes
16:49Is this all it takes
16:53The friendships we make
16:55Is this all that it takes
17:15Don't you worry about a thing
17:30It's about to get interesting
17:32Inside the labyrinth of my mind
17:35My mind
17:36And if somehow you got it
17:40You're about to sink your swim
17:43Inside the labyrinth of my mind
17:46My mind
17:47Wow, that's beautifully written
18:02I mean, as you said
18:03It's very heavy
18:05And very, you know
18:06A lot of darkness
18:08Clearly
18:09But
18:09Yeah
18:10Yeah, it's just like I say
18:11It's just about
18:13Being trapped in that moment
18:15That's what it basically is
18:16So thank you for that
18:17Yeah
18:17So you mentioned earlier
18:20How you haven't been together
18:21As a band for very long
18:23At this point
18:24Which honestly surprised me
18:26A little bit
18:27But for those out there
18:29Who are maybe considering
18:30Joining or starting a band
18:32Or maybe even going out
18:34On their own
18:34What advice would you have
18:36To share with them
18:37For me, it's just
18:38Take the plunge and do it
18:39It was a year and a half ago
18:40I was sitting in front of my TV
18:41Playing the guitar
18:42Not going out
18:43Playing it in front of people
18:44Or anything
18:45So when I first got that message
18:47As I said earlier
18:47From Molly
18:48I jumped straight into it
18:49And it's the best thing I did
18:51It gave me freedom with music
18:52Which is really, really good
18:53So I'll say for anyone
18:54That's thinking of doing it
18:55Do it
18:56Just get out there and do it
18:57Definitely
18:59Yeah, again
19:00We did a thing called
19:02The Unstead Festival
19:03Through the Tumberjaws Forum
19:05So we've been very lucky
19:08That those guys
19:09Have also helped us as well
19:10So it just proves
19:11Anything can happen
19:11I basically didn't do anything
19:13For ten years
19:14And in the first year
19:16It's already gone
19:16To performing live shows
19:18In front of hundreds of people
19:20And yeah
19:20It's been a really good experience
19:22So if there's anyone out there
19:23Thinking about doing it
19:24Yeah, just
19:25Just go and do it
19:26Because you never know
19:27If you're having fun
19:28And you enjoy it
19:30Why not?
19:31Wonderful
19:32That's great advice
19:33And is there any advice
19:34That you've been given
19:36By fellow musicians
19:37That you think you've really benefited from
19:39That maybe got you here today?
19:42I mean for me
19:43I've just been told
19:44To relax and enjoy the moment
19:45So it's a bit hard
19:47When you're about to go on stage
19:48A bit of a nervous nearest
19:49But once that first song's done
19:50I feel generally okay with it
19:52So yeah
19:53Just relax
19:54Just relax and enjoy
19:55That's my motto now
19:56That's what I go by
19:57Don't know about you
19:58Yeah
19:59Just
19:59We performed with a song band
20:02Just the other week
20:03And basically
20:05The lead singer
20:06She was lovely
20:06She just gave us loads of advice
20:08Of who to contact
20:09And we've met some incredible people
20:12Along the way
20:13Some really good sound guys as well
20:15That have helped us
20:15Sort of try and point us
20:17In the right direction
20:17Sometimes
20:18It's good to have
20:20Someone else's opinion as well
20:21To improve things
20:23So yeah
20:23Amazing
20:24Well hopefully
20:25That helps some other artists out there
20:27As much as it
20:28Has helped you guys
20:29But we're just nearing
20:30The end of time now
20:31So your final song for us today
20:33What I want to be
20:34Now I think that title
20:36Maybe gives a little
20:37Bit of a hint
20:38Of what it's about
20:39But tell me the story behind it
20:42It's pretty self-explanatory
20:43Just be yourself
20:44Yeah
20:45It was about when I was
20:46Doing a
20:46Sort of a mundane
20:48Sort of boring job
20:49I come up with the lyrics
20:51Or the melody in my head
20:52And I just thought
20:53I can do better
20:54And improve
20:55So yeah
20:56That's what it's about
20:57Well I can't wait to hear it
20:59Take it away guys
21:00Thank you
21:01Outside the snow
21:22Flames can't spread
21:24From off my brow
21:25I'm trying to reach you
21:29But it seems I don't know how
21:31My hands are cracked like
21:35Sometimes they're explaining
21:37I'm on my knees praying
21:40I'm tired of going where
21:46I've been told where to go
21:48The yes man is aching
21:51Partly's body to my throne
21:54I build my future in effort
21:57I turn it into stone
21:59But sacrificing illusion
22:02Being just what I want to do
22:05Being just what I want
22:07I can be just what I want
22:10Can't be just what I want
22:12To be
22:13Being just what I want
22:18I can be just what I want
22:21Can't be just what I want
22:23To be
22:24Inside my mindset
22:42Looks back to years ago
22:44Situations are ruffling
22:48And this time I say no
22:50Downton's off the butter
22:53In signs where I glow
22:56Look at me, reminiscing
22:59Now I know there's something
23:04Something left to do
23:07Stand no more turning in circles
23:10All I do is turn to you
23:12Now I know there is nothing
23:16Standing in my way
23:18Confidence consumes you
23:22Being just what I want
23:26And I can be just what I want
23:29Can't be just what I want
23:31To be
23:32Being just what I want
23:36I can be just what I want to be
23:43Be just what I want, yeah
23:48I can be just what I want to be
23:52Just where I want to be
