00:00Hello and welcome to Based in Kent. I'm Ronnie and this is the show that introduces you to
00:19original music artists from around the county. Each artist will be here with me in the studio
00:24talking about and performing their own music. Today I'm joined by Tao Long, a soul and R&B
00:29artist from Maidstone. Thanks for being here Tao. Thank you for having me. It's a lovely studio.
00:35Thanks. So tell me a little bit about your background. Now you're quite young as an artist.
00:41How did you first get into it? So I'm 17. I know I don't look it because of the that but I've been
00:53I've been interested in music since I can remember. I have synesthesia and one of my
01:00earliest memories of music is with my nonna and she would put on Elvis CDs and dance with
01:07me and I remember seeing all of the patterns and the music and all of the
01:10colours and everything and it felt more visceral and more sort of engulfing than
01:19any other feeling I'd ever had. And I think from that point onwards I always wanted to play music
01:28and I was always singing and playing guitar and I never did any work for school during
01:35lockdown because I was just playing guitar. And I managed to get a mentor who was very special to me
01:43and he passed away recently. But he sort of shaped me into who I am as an artist. And yeah I've
01:52there's nothing else I'm good at. I'm sorry to hear about your mentor but that's that's an
01:58incredible journey you've already been on. Your first song for us today is Do You Wanna. Tell me a
02:02little bit about the background of this before we get into it. So Do You Wanna is an
02:06interesting one because I have to be very tactful with how I explain this. Well if that's the case
02:13maybe we should just leave it to the audience's imagination. Leave it to the audience's imagination.
02:17Okay well take it away. This is Do You Wanna.
02:19Oh baby I just came here to let you know
02:29that lately I haven't been the same. I don't wanna let you go. I'm making sure we're on the same page
02:44baby I have made it very clear. You drive me crazy. Do you wanna give me your loving? Tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight. Do you wanna give me your loving? Tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight.
03:14Oh my lover I hope you know I'm being serious underneath the covers it's best learning from
03:44makes you feel right. Yeah you know I'm being serious I just came here for the show event. Oh my lover I am how I love you. Tell me what I'm doing. I'm perfect right to get my szczepotok. I'm amazing. I love you. mic Did you catch me you right to get me?
03:58I'm not lazy do you wanna give me your loving? Tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight do you wanna? Give me your loving? Tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight. Do you wanna give me?
04:11Give me your loving, tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight
04:41Is it just me or is it getting harder, you know by now I'm saying yes
04:52So do you wanna, wanna, wanna, now give me your loving
05:02Tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight
05:08Do you wanna, give me your loving, tell me your desires and I'll treat you right tonight
05:38Oh do you wanna
06:02Well I'm sure the audience was very clear on the message of that
06:15Yeah, if I were to say anything about it it would just be I wanted to write a song that
06:21was really groovy and like sort of have that kind of very sort of D'Angelo kind of Lamar-ish
06:33Sort of sort of vibe to it that very noughties thing and I came up with that little
06:40Just by messing around with different chord inversions and it sort of stuck with me
06:50And is that your typical process for writing a song is just messing around on the guitar
06:54I think it depends actually because sometimes songs come to me fully formed like Forest
07:05Eyes which I'll play later came to me just my girlfriend who I love a lot of my songs are
07:13about her she's amazing was showing me I can't remember the name of the song but it's
07:20the it's like the you fill out my senses and she told me that that was written in like
07:28fifteen minutes on a plane and I was like I can write a song about you in a shorter time
07:34than that and instantly I just sort of came up with that with that sort of groove it just
07:41came to me whereas some other songs are a bit more of a process and they're lots of little
07:46ideas that I smushed together and then some of them are just sort of a bit of fun like
07:53you said I just sort of mess around and come up with it and like all like when you rest which
07:59I'll again I'll play later starts with like just started with the melody of that little
08:06and I thought that sounds really cool and I kind of did all the like John Mayer-y stuff over that
08:15well you've already given us the background for it so your next song Forest Eyes why don't we get
08:20right into it yeah this is Forest Eyes
08:22I can never say just how I feel to you my dear no it ain't fair
08:36all the combinations in our conversations so all I'm able to do is stare
08:48and I know I know just what I want to say to you
09:00why is it so so damn hard for me to follow through as I stare into your forest eyes I'm hypnotized I can't tell no lies they're all that I see
09:26oh how I despise your forest eyes cause they're always distracting me oh I'm getting a few words out now I don't know how but I deserve some praise
09:50oh I hope you know all these things I go just to stumble on a single simplest phrase
10:02and I know just what I want to say to you
10:08so why is it so hard to make it so time hard for me to follow through as I stare at a
10:30I know, I know, I know.
10:47And I know, no joy.
11:00What I want to say to you
11:04So why is it so damn hard
11:13For me to follow through
11:16As I stand to your forest eyes
11:23I'm hypnotized
11:26I can't tell no lies
11:29They're all that I see
11:31Oh, how I despise
11:35Your sweet forest eyes
11:38Cause they're always distracting me
11:44Oh, your forest eyes
11:48I'm hypnotized
11:50I can't tell no lies
11:53They're all that I see
11:56Oh, how I despise your sweet forest eyes
12:02Cause they're just so distracting
12:06And no, I'm not acting
12:09They tear up my tongue
12:12Right before I've begun
12:14They wash me ashore
12:17And I'm still wanting more
12:20Leave me with no map
12:23But how will I get back
12:26No, no, I can't hide
12:29Hello and welcome back to Based in Kent
12:34Where I'm joined by Tao Long from Maidstone
12:36Thanks for being here, Tao
12:37Thank you again for having me
12:39Right, so the next portion of this
12:41Is my favorite part of the show
12:42We're going to play a quick fire question round
12:44A timer is going to come up on the monitor between us
12:47Just for the audience's sake
12:49That's really ominous
12:50No, it's fine, I promise
12:52You'll do great
12:53And it's going to start counting down
12:54As soon as I ask the first question
12:56Okay
12:56And we'll get through as many of them as we can
12:58Alright, cool
12:59Okay
12:59Live or recorded music
13:01What is your preference?
13:03See, I like playing live
13:04Because I can put a lot more energy into it
13:06But with recordings
13:07I can mess around with so many different layers
13:11I love producing
13:12I'm a producer
13:12And I love like building songs up
13:16And adding loads of elements
13:17That I couldn't do live
13:18Because I think
13:19I believe in a distinction
13:20Between live and recorded music
13:22So no preference
13:24You love them both
13:25No, no preference
13:25Okay
13:25Tea or coffee?
13:28Coffee
13:29But only espresso
13:30Because I hate joy
13:32And just a quick one
13:35When I was doing my GCSEs a couple of years ago
13:39I used to order two double espresso
13:40From Greg's
13:41And then pour one into the other
13:43And have a quadruple espresso
13:44But I used to bring a friend with me
13:45So they wouldn't judge me
13:46Okay
13:47That, wow
13:49Writing or performing music?
13:53I don't know
13:54I think I don't get any bigger high
13:57Than performing
13:58Performing just gives me this rush
14:00And I love it
14:01As much as I love writing
14:03I think I'm a better performer
14:04Than I am a writer
14:05Interesting
14:06Okay
14:06Winter or summer?
14:08Summer
14:08I don't understand
14:10Why people like winter
14:11People are like
14:12Oh, you can get cozy
14:13If the only reason
14:14Why you like the cold
14:16Is the act of getting warm
14:18Why don't you just like it
14:19When it's warm?
14:20That's a very good question
14:21I'm quite passionate about that
14:22I can see that
14:23What's your favorite song
14:26That you've written so far?
14:27Favorite song that I've ever written
14:28Is probably
14:30Do You Wanna
14:30I just
14:33I love it
14:34From a musical standpoint
14:35It's
14:36Probably my most
14:37Sort of
14:38Advanced song
14:41When it comes to
14:41The musicality of it
14:43And the harmonic structure
14:44Okay, very nice
14:45Your favorite fellow Kent musician
14:47My favorite fellow Kent musician
14:49Would have to be
14:51Shout out to
14:53Am I allowed to say
14:56Someone that I already work with?
14:57Sure
14:57My bass player
14:59And very, very good friend
15:01Buck Moore
15:02He is just amazing
15:05He's the grooviest guy ever
15:06Alright
15:08Well, that wrapped up the time
15:09Very nicely for us
15:10On the quickfire question round
15:12Some very interesting answers
15:14Yeah
15:15In there
15:15Very, very unique
15:16I like that
15:17So your next song for us today
15:19Home
15:19Tell us a little bit about that one
15:20Home is
15:21About
15:23Longing
15:24I think there's no
15:25There's no more powerful feeling
15:28Than longing
15:28And you get that
15:30In so many songs
15:31That
15:32A lot of people
15:33Can't put their finger on
15:34Why they want to keep listening to it
15:36But
15:36It
15:37It's because of that sense of longing
15:39You want
15:39To feel
15:41Apart
15:41From something
15:43And I think humans crave that
15:44Distance
15:45And that sort of pain of distance
15:48And I don't know why
15:49But it's something that we
15:51Sort of intrinsically
15:52Really
15:53Really
15:55Really enjoy
15:56In a sort of
15:58In quite a
15:59Quite a sort of
16:01Self-sabotaging way
16:04We want to be
16:05We want to feel longing
16:06It's like when you're
16:08When you're sad
16:08And you want to listen to a sad song
16:10And you're like no it wasn't sad enough
16:11And you've rewind it
16:12And you just want to wallow
16:13I think humans like to wallow
16:15And I'm in a
16:18Sort of
16:19I wouldn't call it long distance
16:20But fairly long distance relationship
16:22And I have been for a few years
16:23And I
16:26I wanted to
16:28Get that feeling of longing
16:30Out
16:30I think for a lot of musicians
16:32Their music is an outlet
16:34Even if it's not about them directly
16:36It's exploring feelings
16:37That they feel they need to express
16:39And
16:40Home is about
16:41Something that I heard
16:44In a poem somewhere
16:47Of
16:47You say your home
16:51Isn't a house
16:52So come to me
16:55And it really
16:58Like that really
16:59Made me feel something
17:00And that was when
17:01I came up with
17:02The whole my love
17:03If I'm your home
17:04Then how long
17:05Are you going to be
17:05Well I can't wait to hear it
17:08Take it away
17:08Yeah
17:17Everything I've prayed for
17:20Is right here
17:23Within this girl
17:26Waiting every night and day for
17:32Her to take
17:35My world
17:38So since
17:40When did we end
17:44Apart
17:46Get so hard
17:50My love
17:52If I'm your home
17:55How long
17:57You're going to be
17:59These days and nights
18:05Feel so long
18:07When you are not
18:09Next to me
18:10All that I could pray for
18:19I feel within her soul
18:24Loving that I will return for
18:31Come take my control
18:36So since
18:38So since
18:39Since when
18:40Did we end
18:42Apart
18:44Get so hard
18:49My love
18:50If I'm your home
18:53How long
18:55You're going to be
18:57These days and nights
19:03Feel so long
19:05When you are not
19:07Next to me
19:09I'm your home
19:22I'm your home
19:27You're home
19:36You're home
19:38You're home
19:41You're home
19:47I miss you too much
20:03No, I can't stress enough
20:06The pain I feel when you have gone away
20:11I love you to pieces
20:15But my hypothesis ceases
20:17If you've gone too long
20:20Then yours will fade away
20:27I love my love
20:45My love if I'm young
20:49How long you gonna be
20:54These days and nights feel so long
21:01When you are not next to me
21:05Nice to me
21:08My love if I'm young
21:13Beautiful, wow
21:15Now we don't have very long left unfortunately
21:18I wish that weren't the case
21:20I would love to keep chatting to you about this
21:21It's so interesting to hear about your music
21:23But your final song for us today
21:25When You Rest
21:26Tell us a little bit about that one
21:28When You Rest was the first sort of proper song
21:30That I released and that I wrote
21:33Sort of under the style that I write in now
21:36Rosie when you rest on my shoulder
21:47My heart is beating so fast
21:53And as we grow each day older
21:57Our burning love it will last
22:02Cause I know that you might be the one
22:06That would make me the luckiest man alive
22:11And I know that you might be the one
22:15That would make me the luckiest man alive
22:20Rosie, what you think of when dreaming
22:25I guess you never can tell
22:30And as we lay there sleeping
22:34I know you've been through all hell
22:39But I know that you might be the one
22:43That would make me the luckiest man alive
22:47And I know that you might be the one
22:52That would make me the luckiest man alive
22:56Cause I know that you might be the one
23:15Cause I know that you might be the one
23:19You might be the one
23:25And I know that you might be the one
23:28That would make me the luckiest
23:31The luckiest man alive
23:37Man alive
23:42And I know that I might be the one
23:47That would make me the luckiest
23:50The luckiest man alive
