And in this occasion, we will talk about the first professional pool league in the Philippines
00:07
that is far-reaching and will raise the billiards in the country, the Sharks Billiards Association.
00:13
This brings a new opportunity for players from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
00:20
And to give us more details about this, we will meet the founder of Naturang Liga, Mr. Handy Mariano.
00:27
Good morning, and welcome to Rise and Shine, Pilipinas.
00:29
Good morning.
00:30
Good morning.
00:31
Good morning.
00:32
Alright, Mr. Handy, as the founder of the first pool league, billiards, here in the Philippines,
00:39
what is your motivation, what inspired you to form this organization?
00:45
I used to be a player when I was young.
00:50
Back then, the image of billiards was of gambling, alcohol, and bars.
00:57
I didn't see a clear career path in billiards.
01:02
In short, there was no future.
01:06
It's sad to say, but that's the truth.
01:09
Actually, even in schools, when you play billiards, it's like you're given a major offense right away.
01:14
Yes, because some people cut classes to play billiards.
01:18
If you think about it, basketball players do the same thing.
01:23
They cut classes because they have to practice or play a game.
01:27
The only thing about billiards is that it's not sanctioned by the school.
01:31
Athletes who play billiards go to school and play outside.
01:36
So maybe if the school has a program of billiards or varsity billiards,
01:43
the kids don't have to cut classes.
01:46
Let's break the stigma.
01:49
Let's go to the Indian Sharks Billiards Association.
01:53
What's the format and how does it enhance the experience of both the players and the fans?
02:00
We started four years ago.
02:04
We did the regular stuff like tournaments, exhibition games for the players.
02:12
I observed why billiards players, even though we already have a tournament,
02:17
they still gamble outside.
02:20
They still play money games.
02:22
So I studied other sports like basketball, soccer.
02:27
They have leagues.
02:29
Players get a salary and they have contracts.
02:32
So I thought, why don't we make a league in billiards with teams?
02:36
Because there are a lot of players here in the Philippines, unlike in other countries.
02:40
The format is actually a season-long tournament or a season-long league.
02:47
In this case, in our first season, we have four teams.
02:50
And then three months, they will play.
02:52
All over the Philippines?
02:54
Four teams are Quezon City, Manila, Taguig, and Negros Occidental.
03:00
But for the second season next year, we're hoping to get an additional two more teams.
03:06
So I want to expand slowly but surely.
03:09
Yes.
03:10
This is a good opportunity to give attention to the talent of Filipinos all over the Philippines.
03:19
So in your opinion, how can this league help in its impact in sports,
03:26
and even in our countrymen,
03:28
those who we just nourish to be an athlete?
03:36
As I said earlier, when I was young, I didn't have a clear career path.
03:40
So I hope that one day, billiards will be like basketball.
03:44
When I was young, I saw Michael Jordan in basketball.
03:48
I knew how to play varsity and then play PBA or NBA.
03:54
In billiards, I hope it will be like that too.
03:56
When it comes to billiards, Sir Efren Bata-Reyes, right?
04:02
Yes, the one and only.
04:03
So there's no one to follow, right?
04:05
Actually, there are those who will follow,
04:07
but since the stigma of gambling is still there,
04:11
we can't really break through in mainstream sports.
04:16
And also, there needs to be support,
04:18
not only from an organization, but also from government agencies,
04:22
our private partners,
04:24
to help and support our athlete players when it comes to billiards.
04:29
Okay, how is the support here from PSC?
04:33
Actually, we're under GAB since it is a professional league.
04:37
Yesterday, I was just there at GAB.
04:39
They're helping me find new team owners.
04:42
Okay, GAB is?
04:43
Games and Amusement Board.
04:45
Oh, okay.
04:46
So they regulate professional sports.
04:49
Oh, on that part.
04:50
Well, we want to know how your association is doing
04:53
when it comes to the trainings and the support to our players.
04:58
Maybe the future players who want to join this.
05:02
The training is handled by the team owners.
05:04
Like in basketball, the teams have a training session.
05:08
It's similar to billiards.
05:10
So that's how it is.
05:11
We are trying to put an existing system that already works with another sport,
05:19
just putting it in billiards.
05:22
All right.
05:23
Hadley, I'm curious.
05:24
What is your vision or association here
05:28
so that this sport can be promoted here in the Philippines
05:31
even in the international scene?
05:34
The Filipino billiard players,
05:37
we're world beaters in the sport.
05:39
Meaning, the best in the Philippines can beat the best in the world.
05:44
We can be the best right now.
05:46
It's just that our country can't do it.
05:49
So the vision for SBA is to be the NBA of billiards.
05:54
One day, foreign players will see Filipinos playing here.
06:00
They want to join because they can see the competition.
06:04
You're playing billiards?
06:05
I tried when I was in college.
06:07
College?
06:08
I was the one who cut.
06:09
But I enjoyed it.
06:11
I enjoyed the billiards.
06:13
I like it when there's a pool ball and you put it like...
06:15
What do you call that?
06:16
Cue stick.
06:17
Cue stick.
06:18
There's a cue stick.
06:19
And there's also a blue shot.
06:21
I thought you were very professional.
06:24
And your eyes are really...
06:26
You don't know what you're doing with your hands.
06:28
But when you shoot, you shoot it.
06:31
Speaking of which,
06:32
what if you have zero knowledge but you're very interested?
06:37
Do you have training for beginners?
06:41
Right now, we're already planning an amateur league.
06:44
So with the amateur league,
06:46
of course, there are classes A, B, C, D.
06:48
So there are more opportunities for our countrymen?
06:50
There are more.
06:52
Okay, let's go to your game.
06:54
When and where will it be held?
06:55
And where will the players come from?
06:58
By October 14, we will start Monday to Friday.
07:03
8 p.m. onwards at 234 Sharks Arena and Sports Bar
07:08
along Tomas Moroto, Quezon City.
07:10
It's a free entrance.
07:11
So anyone who's interested can come.
07:14
Maybe you'll go there.
07:16
Of course.
07:17
I'll teach you how to play.
07:19
I'll go there because you're there, my friend.
07:23
Yes, let's try something new.
07:25
Maybe this is our hidden talent.
07:29
Another way of breaking the stigma is
07:31
not only boys can play that but even girls.
07:33
Of course.
07:34
So you can join us there.
07:36
Of course.
07:38
But of course,
07:39
maybe we should instill in our minds,
07:45
how can we raise the industry of billiards
07:51
in the minds of Filipinos?
07:53
I think the best way for us to do that
07:56
is to actually have a collegiate league someday.
07:59
Okay.
08:00
Think of the players of the SBA,
08:03
the graduates of Lasal, Ateneo, UP.
08:07
So by doing that,
08:08
the kids on the streets who play,
08:11
who have talent,
08:13
they can go to schools and become scholars.
08:15
Okay.
08:16
So I think this is the best way to uplift the sport.
08:21
Is this tournament different from the usual billiards
08:25
or the same format?
08:27
Yes, it's actually different
08:29
in the sense that it is a season
08:31
because most tournaments are only 7 days.
08:34
This one is longer.
08:36
How long is it?
08:37
It's 3 months.
08:39
3 months.
08:40
Is it the same players or different?
08:42
4 teams.
08:43
4 teams.
08:44
We have 5 players per team.
08:46
Okay.
08:47
We play it on a team basis.
08:49
So there's 5 on 5,
08:50
2 on 2,
08:51
and 1 on 1.
08:52
So is this the type of billiards
08:54
where you shouldn't hit the 8
08:56
and there are stripes?
08:58
You're talking about 8 ball.
09:00
Our format is 9 balls.
09:02
9 balls.
09:03
That's a lot.
09:04
It's harder.
09:05
How do you do 9 balls?
09:07
9 balls is less.
09:09
8 balls is 15 balls.
09:11
There are stripes.
09:12
You hit the stripes first before the 8.
09:14
For 9 balls,
09:15
you have to shoot it in order.
09:17
1, 2, 3, up to 9.
09:19
So the last ball is 9.
09:20
We need to go to the tournament
09:22
so we can try it.
09:23
There's 8 ball and 9 ball.
09:25
Yes.
09:26
What I'll do is I'll add the ball.
09:29
That's a different game.
09:32
On that note,
09:33
thank you very much
09:34
for being a part of our program.
09:36
We learned a lot
09:38
and shared important details
09:40
about the Sharks Billiards Association.
09:43
Mr. Hadley Mariana Molin,
09:45
thank you very much.
