Sunderland University is expected to make 76 members of staff redundant as it
00:04
continues to struggle with funding challenges. This would be the second
00:08
formal notification of redundancies in less than six months. A spokesperson for
00:13
the University has claimed that the freeze of home student fees that has not
00:17
risen in line with inflation, coupled with a decline in international student
00:21
admissions, means that many institutions have been forced to make difficult
00:25
decisions in recent months. The news comes just weeks after the University
00:29
Executive decided that the St. Mary's Childcare Centre would close in July
00:33
2025, as it had become clear that the University could not continue to operate
00:37
in a financially sustainable manner. Other cutbacks have been made across the
00:42
campuses too. 141 universities across the country agree that tuition fees need to
00:48
increase and direct government funding needs to become available to halt a
00:53
growing deficit in England. Tuition fees have been capped at £9,250
00:58
since 2017.
