Sunderland teenagers show they care by clearing rubbish from Roker Beach

Sunderland College teenagers have been clearing rubbish from Roker Beach.

00:00okay then lads why were you so keen to get involved in this beach clean like just like

00:13to make sure there's been loads of reports about like wildlife being killed by all the plastic so

00:17we just thought we'd just come down and help save the turtles and that and what sort of stuff have

00:21you found um well we have found a lot of plastic and obviously as you said it's just just damages

00:26like not just the animals but just it doesn't look good you know you're trying you're going to

00:31the beach this is like probably the most popular beach in the north east you know and if you're

00:36coming down and you just see it's just filled with litter it's not going to be it's a pleasant

00:40experience as you know okay then lisa how many kids you got down there doing the beach cleaning

00:46so we've brought 15 students from sunderland college down to do the beach clean today all from sunderland

00:52sixth form we've all been really keen to get involved um to help protect the environment and

00:57gather some litter up today and just why is it so important for the college to get involved in these

01:01sort of initiatives well it's really important for the college group and for students to connect with

01:07the community and really serve a purpose and sense of responsibility to protect the environment within

01:13the region so we want to instill in students that idea about looking after wildlife and how important

01:22it is to protect marine and creatures from things like plastic waste so that's been the kind of drive

01:28behind why we're doing it today i know it's not just roca beach that this is taking place on is it

01:34no it's not this is part of a three beach clean which we've done for the last three years of cross

01:38education partnership northeast and that ranges from sitting caroo down in hartlepool roca in

01:44sunderland and new biggin beach up at northumberland which is near northumberland college our most

01:49northern campus
