00:00The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is still investigating the presence of Philippine cargo ships.
00:07Not long after, another incident of shipwrecks in the West Philippine Sea of China
00:14in the middle of the maritime patrol there.
00:17This is Clayzel Pardilla in Central Nong Balita Live.
00:22Clayzel.
00:24Aljo, there is a sign of a decrease in the volume of fish caught in the West Philippine Sea.
00:33That is why the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is in a hurry to increase the capacity of our fishermen
00:40who fish in the West Philippine Sea.
00:44Not long ago, two ships of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
00:50were hit by a shipwreck in China while maritime patrols were conducting in the West Philippine Sea.
00:58The agency's airplane was hit by a laser while conducting a domain awareness flight.
01:05These are just a few of the incidents of chaos and invasion of China in the West Philippine Sea.
01:13According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources,
01:16the geopolitical tension in the production of fish in the West Philippine Sea has an effect.
01:22According to the Philippine Statistics Authority,
01:25the number of fish caught in the West Philippine Sea in the first six months of 2024
01:32decreased to 101,000 metric tons.
01:33Almost 7,000 metric tons less than 108,392 metric tons in the past year at the same time.
01:43This is something that the BFAR does not ignore.
01:46The geopolitical situation, we can say that's one of the reasons.
01:53There are also other reasons like the increase of free will,
01:57and the airline that passed through and affected the migration pattern of fish.
02:04We don't intend to actually ignore this fact that the contribution of the West Philippine Sea
02:15to the overall production of our national production declined significantly.
02:19So we are taking this seriously.
02:22The BFAR will also look into the presence of Philippine seabirds,
02:27a 50-meter steel multi-mission offshore vessel,
02:31and another multi-purpose refrigerated cargo vessel worth Php 1.5 billion,
02:37the agency's target purchase.
02:39More than Php 665 million worth of boats and other fishing equipment will be purchased
02:48and distributed by the BFAR for the Philippine Sea program
02:53that aims to increase the capacity of fishermen in our territory.
02:58The government has exhausted all the necessary efforts to actually address the issue
03:08and we will not stop implementing programs that will help our fishermen.
03:14As far as improving our capacity in terms of monitoring, control, and surveillance.
03:20Aside from that, our other floating assets have multi-mission ports.
03:26We also want to use them for lifeboat development.
03:30Despite the situation in the West Philippine Sea,
03:33the BFAR assured that the fish supply remains sufficient.
03:37The supply here in Metro Manila has been sufficient.
03:42And this has not affected the price.
03:47Taking into account that our country has a lot of fisheries.
03:52Our source of fish is not only from the marine, but also from aquaculture.
04:02Aldo, in the last quarter of 2024,
04:05the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources expects that the supply of fish will decrease
04:12due to the implementation of the closed fishing season in some of the Philippine seas,
04:17such as Davao Gulf, Zamboanga, and Palawan.
04:21But the BFAR assures that the supply will remain sufficient
04:25because at the same time, the arrival of imported fish is expected to be approved by the agency.
04:32Aldo?
04:33Claycell, the fishers of China are not competing with us, with our Philippine fishermen in the WPS.
04:47Aldo, according to the reports,
04:50one of what China is doing is poaching.
04:55And this results in overfishing.
04:59So, this could affect the supply.
05:02So, it's not directly competing,
05:06but China's activities are affecting our production.
05:12Aldo?
05:13Thank you very much, Claycell Pardilla.
