The Greens rank and file were aghast when their top candidate recently suggested forming a coalition with the liberal Free Democrats. Now,ahead of the Green party conference in early May,the party leadership has backed down and categorically ruled out any co-operation with the conservative CDU or the FDP. But the political damage has been done. The party's doesn't seem to have a clear policy and people are asking who is actually in charge of the Greens - the nominal party leadership or the grass roots?
