Chancellor Angela Merkel has been taking a bruising over her plans to rescue the euro by enforcing strict austerity measures. The defeat of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the resignation of the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte have left her further isolated. At the same time, conditions in Greece continue to deteriorate, leading to increasing pressure that they abandon the euro.
