Leeds United: Who should be Leeds’ penalty taker?

00:00Now, in terms of pressure, another form of pressure of football, of course, is taking

00:04penalties, which is not something that Leeds did very well at the weekend.

00:07No.

00:08Pascal Stroik, of course, took and missed against Cardiff, even though he of course

00:13had scored for Leeds before in a penalty incident, but that's an interesting one, isn't it?

00:19Because of course, Pascal Stroik is not an attacking player, so to speak.

00:23So why is it that he is on penalties and should it not be someone else?

00:29Well, it might be an old-fashioned way to look at it, but I would always say that strikers

00:33or attackers should be on penalties.

00:35I mean, that might be a sort of narrow-minded way to look at it, but it's the way I see

00:38it.

00:39And if I was a striker or a forward or a winger playing for any team, Leeds United or anybody,

00:43then I'd be putting my hand up and saying, I want to take these penalties.

00:45And that's not to say that the players have got on the team aren't, but that's just the

00:49way I'd look at it.

00:50And the Pascal penalty taker thing basically sends back to the Boxing Day game at Preston,

00:56which obviously the loss, I remember being there and Pascal stepping up for that penalty.

01:00And Daniel Farke was asked about afterwards what the situation was there, because it's

01:03fair to say eyebrows were raised when he stepped up to take it as a centre-back.

01:06Very good player, but a centre-back and definitely not a striker.

01:09And that was basically said because Somerville and Peru weren't on the pitch, who were the

01:13main two penalty takers.

01:15And Pascal was sort of seen as the number three penalty taker, if you like.

01:18And he did convert it and converted it very well.

01:21And then obviously, that sort of stayed in the memory for a little bit and then you forget

01:24about it.

01:25And then obviously, the winner penalty against Portsmouth on the first day of the season

01:27and who steps up?

01:28Pascal Stroik.

01:29And everybody's thinking, oh, yeah, of course, he's on penalties at the moment.

01:32And again, converted it.

01:33And I guess it's one of those things where if it ain't broke, you don't fix it.

01:36So that's why he took it again at the weekend, even though there were other attackers on

01:40the pitch.

01:41But obviously, let's not beat around the bush, it wasn't a very good penalty.

01:44I mean, it's fine if you stroke it down the middle and the keeper dies out the way, but

01:47he saved it with his legs and stuff.

01:48And it just wasn't a convincing penalty, was it?

01:51I mean, I always want to see penalties rocketed into the bottom left or bottom right corner

01:55or top corner Kane style, you know, that's the way it should be.

01:57Top corner for me.

02:00I know it's a bit more risky, but you get in the top corner, no keeper saving that.

02:07And it certainly wasn't that.

02:08So, I mean, it'd be two things.

02:09It'd be interesting to see who takes the next one now that he's missed that.

02:12The other thing you probably should say is that I think it's fair to say that Peru would

02:15be ahead of him in the penalties, you know, penalty takers' order.

02:20He was still on the bench at the time.

02:21Bamford certainly would be as well, though his record's not been great from of late,

02:25to say the least.

02:26And the other thing I would say is that Mateo Joseph, obviously, we keep talking about him

02:30being a sort of young striker making his way, which he still is, obviously, but, you know,

02:34like end of the day, he's going to want to score goals and we're all hoping this is his

02:39sort of real breakthrough season.

02:41So if I was him, and I'm sure he probably is already, I'd be putting my hand up and

02:44saying, you know, I want to be first choice penalty taker and there's nothing to suggest

02:47that he can't be a good penalty taker.

02:48So he'd be the obvious one because, at the moment, he seems like the first choice striker.

02:53Obviously, Bamford's not fit and why he's just come back and Peru, you know, doing well

02:57off the bench.

02:58But whether Farkeh can get them both on the team remains to be seen.

03:02But it seems fair to say that Joseph, you know, such an exciting young player, will

03:06be always in the team, it seems now, it seems that way.

03:09So I don't see why he can't be first choice penalty taker.

03:11Maybe he will be, you know, maybe they get one in the next game and he takes them.

03:14But yeah, it's an interesting one, really.

03:15I mean, thankfully, it didn't matter because there's still one anyway, but obviously, it

03:19would have been galling had they missed that, had Pascal's penalty been saved and then Cardiff

03:22went up the other end and equalised and got a 1-1 draw.

03:25You know, I mean, everybody would have been absolutely gutted by it.

03:27So thankfully, that wasn't the case and obviously, then Peru got the second goal.

03:31But the other interesting thing that Daniel Farkeh said after it was, was not so much

03:34about who was taking the penalties, because I think he said, you know, you can forgive

03:37everybody a penalty miss, which you can, and that makes me wonder if Pascal will take the

03:41next one again.

03:42It remains to be seen.

03:43He's obviously reasonably good at it than usually.

03:46But the other thing he said was that he was disappointed in terms of, like, no-one following

03:49it up, basically.

03:50And Farkeh, obviously, an ex-striker himself, and obviously, it was saved, but the ball

03:53was still there for a rebound as such.

03:56And I think his big quirk was that no-one was, sort of, like, charging in at a million

03:59miles an hour for a rebound, which I think was probably, sort of, like, quite, sort of,

04:03like, reflective of Leeds just not being ruthless in this at the moment, and not being ruthless

04:07in this at the moment and taking the chances.

04:09So that's worth looking into, watch.

04:10So maybe the next time they come, expect people to be swarming into the box after it

04:14for a rebound.

04:15That should be the case.

04:16So, yeah, bottom line is, I think strikers should take penalties.

04:18I think most strikers are wingers.

04:20I think most people would agree with that.

04:21And Joseph seems like the obvious one to me.

04:23Ramazani, again, like, we've talked about him already.

04:25I don't see why, you know, he's a flair player who, he almost seems already like he's got

04:31that, sort of, Somerville swagger about him a little bit, you know, where he can, sort

04:33of, like, be confident and step up to the plate, and he's not scared of pressure.

04:37And I could see him being quite a good penalty taker as well.

04:39So he's another option.

04:41He's got loads of attacking players' leads.

04:42So he shouldn't be short of options.

04:43And, yeah, they got away with that one, obviously, but they need to make sure that they get the

04:46next one right, because next time it could well be crucial.

04:50And often the worry is with perhaps with flair players, sometimes I think they tend to overcomplicate

04:54penalties a little bit, you know, all the run-ups and all the stuttering and things.

04:58Just go and put your foot through it, man.

05:32Obviously, you know, it's assists and the all-round gameplay and everything.

05:33And Bamford's a classic example of that, because when you take him out of the team,

05:34obviously, he leads...

05:35You know, he did miss his hold-up play.

05:36Obviously, still do to a degree.

05:37But Joseph is becoming very, very good at it himself.

05:38So, you're not just judged on that.

05:39But at the end of the day, a lot of it is down to figures.

05:40And you want to see at the end of the season as many goals as you possibly can.
