Now, in terms of pressure, another form of pressure of football, of course, is taking
00:04
penalties, which is not something that Leeds did very well at the weekend.
00:07
No.
00:08
Pascal Stroik, of course, took and missed against Cardiff, even though he of course
00:13
had scored for Leeds before in a penalty incident, but that's an interesting one, isn't it?
00:19
Because of course, Pascal Stroik is not an attacking player, so to speak.
00:23
So why is it that he is on penalties and should it not be someone else?
00:29
Well, it might be an old-fashioned way to look at it, but I would always say that strikers
00:33
or attackers should be on penalties.
00:35
I mean, that might be a sort of narrow-minded way to look at it, but it's the way I see
00:38
it.
00:39
And if I was a striker or a forward or a winger playing for any team, Leeds United or anybody,
00:43
then I'd be putting my hand up and saying, I want to take these penalties.
00:45
And that's not to say that the players have got on the team aren't, but that's just the
00:49
way I'd look at it.
00:50
And the Pascal penalty taker thing basically sends back to the Boxing Day game at Preston,
00:56
which obviously the loss, I remember being there and Pascal stepping up for that penalty.
01:00
And Daniel Farke was asked about afterwards what the situation was there, because it's
01:03
fair to say eyebrows were raised when he stepped up to take it as a centre-back.
01:06
Very good player, but a centre-back and definitely not a striker.
01:09
And that was basically said because Somerville and Peru weren't on the pitch, who were the
01:13
main two penalty takers.
01:15
And Pascal was sort of seen as the number three penalty taker, if you like.
01:18
And he did convert it and converted it very well.
01:21
And then obviously, that sort of stayed in the memory for a little bit and then you forget
01:24
about it.
01:25
And then obviously, the winner penalty against Portsmouth on the first day of the season
01:27
and who steps up?
01:28
Pascal Stroik.
01:29
And everybody's thinking, oh, yeah, of course, he's on penalties at the moment.
01:32
And again, converted it.
01:33
And I guess it's one of those things where if it ain't broke, you don't fix it.
01:36
So that's why he took it again at the weekend, even though there were other attackers on
01:40
the pitch.
01:41
But obviously, let's not beat around the bush, it wasn't a very good penalty.
01:44
I mean, it's fine if you stroke it down the middle and the keeper dies out the way, but
01:47
he saved it with his legs and stuff.
01:48
And it just wasn't a convincing penalty, was it?
01:51
I mean, I always want to see penalties rocketed into the bottom left or bottom right corner
01:55
or top corner Kane style, you know, that's the way it should be.
01:57
Top corner for me.
01:58
I always...
01:59
Yeah.
02:00
I know it's a bit more risky, but you get in the top corner, no keeper saving that.
02:04
That's it.
02:05
That's it.
02:06
A hundred percent.
02:07
And it certainly wasn't that.
02:08
So, I mean, it'd be two things.
02:09
It'd be interesting to see who takes the next one now that he's missed that.
02:12
The other thing you probably should say is that I think it's fair to say that Peru would
02:15
be ahead of him in the penalties, you know, penalty takers' order.
02:20
He was still on the bench at the time.
02:21
Bamford certainly would be as well, though his record's not been great from of late,
02:25
to say the least.
02:26
And the other thing I would say is that Mateo Joseph, obviously, we keep talking about him
02:30
being a sort of young striker making his way, which he still is, obviously, but, you know,
02:34
like end of the day, he's going to want to score goals and we're all hoping this is his
02:39
sort of real breakthrough season.
02:41
So if I was him, and I'm sure he probably is already, I'd be putting my hand up and
02:44
saying, you know, I want to be first choice penalty taker and there's nothing to suggest
02:47
that he can't be a good penalty taker.
02:48
So he'd be the obvious one because, at the moment, he seems like the first choice striker.
02:53
Obviously, Bamford's not fit and why he's just come back and Peru, you know, doing well
02:57
off the bench.
02:58
But whether Farkeh can get them both on the team remains to be seen.
03:02
But it seems fair to say that Joseph, you know, such an exciting young player, will
03:06
be always in the team, it seems now, it seems that way.
03:09
So I don't see why he can't be first choice penalty taker.
03:11
Maybe he will be, you know, maybe they get one in the next game and he takes them.
03:14
But yeah, it's an interesting one, really.
03:15
I mean, thankfully, it didn't matter because there's still one anyway, but obviously, it
03:19
would have been galling had they missed that, had Pascal's penalty been saved and then Cardiff
03:22
went up the other end and equalised and got a 1-1 draw.
03:25
You know, I mean, everybody would have been absolutely gutted by it.
03:27
So thankfully, that wasn't the case and obviously, then Peru got the second goal.
03:31
But the other interesting thing that Daniel Farkeh said after it was, was not so much
03:34
about who was taking the penalties, because I think he said, you know, you can forgive
03:37
everybody a penalty miss, which you can, and that makes me wonder if Pascal will take the
03:41
next one again.
03:42
It remains to be seen.
03:43
He's obviously reasonably good at it than usually.
03:46
But the other thing he said was that he was disappointed in terms of, like, no-one following
03:49
it up, basically.
03:50
And Farkeh, obviously, an ex-striker himself, and obviously, it was saved, but the ball
03:53
was still there for a rebound as such.
03:56
And I think his big quirk was that no-one was, sort of, like, charging in at a million
03:59
miles an hour for a rebound, which I think was probably, sort of, like, quite, sort of,
04:03
like, reflective of Leeds just not being ruthless in this at the moment, and not being ruthless
04:07
in this at the moment and taking the chances.
04:09
So that's worth looking into, watch.
04:10
So maybe the next time they come, expect people to be swarming into the box after it
04:14
for a rebound.
04:15
That should be the case.
04:16
So, yeah, bottom line is, I think strikers should take penalties.
04:18
I think most strikers are wingers.
04:20
I think most people would agree with that.
04:21
And Joseph seems like the obvious one to me.
04:23
Ramazani, again, like, we've talked about him already.
04:25
I don't see why, you know, he's a flair player who, he almost seems already like he's got
04:31
that, sort of, Somerville swagger about him a little bit, you know, where he can, sort
04:33
of, like, be confident and step up to the plate, and he's not scared of pressure.
04:37
And I could see him being quite a good penalty taker as well.
04:39
So he's another option.
04:41
He's got loads of attacking players' leads.
04:42
So he shouldn't be short of options.
04:43
And, yeah, they got away with that one, obviously, but they need to make sure that they get the
04:46
next one right, because next time it could well be crucial.
04:50
And often the worry is with perhaps with flair players, sometimes I think they tend to overcomplicate
04:54
penalties a little bit, you know, all the run-ups and all the stuttering and things.
04:58
Just go and put your foot through it, man.
05:00
Just go and be like...
05:01
Yeah.
05:02
Yeah.
05:03
Yeah.
05:04
Just hammer it in.
05:05
Julian Dick style or something.
05:06
You know, try and...
05:07
I don't know.
05:08
Just...
05:09
Try a Penenka or something.
05:10
Yeah.
05:11
I was going to say.
05:12
I'll just...
05:13
Yeah.
05:14
Just don't complicate it.
05:15
Just literally, like...
05:16
To me, you shouldn't...
05:17
As someone who's taken a penalty, you should score a penalty.
05:18
I mean, it's...
05:19
If you've missed it, you've failed, because let's be honest, you've got...
05:20
You're from 12 yards out.
05:21
You've got no...
05:22
12 yards.
05:23
Keep it to eight.
05:24
Yeah.
05:25
Definitely.
05:26
Definitely.
05:27
You shouldn't...
05:28
And I think that's right.
05:29
And I think that's the other thing with strikers as well, because it's like...
05:31
I mean, it's not just about scoring goals that forward players are judged on.
05:32
Obviously, you know, it's assists and the all-round gameplay and everything.
05:33
And Bamford's a classic example of that, because when you take him out of the team,
05:34
obviously, he leads...
05:35
You know, he did miss his hold-up play.
05:36
Obviously, still do to a degree.
05:37
But Joseph is becoming very, very good at it himself.
05:38
So, you're not just judged on that.
05:39
But at the end of the day, a lot of it is down to figures.
05:40
And you want to see at the end of the season as many goals as you possibly can.
05:41
And I think that's...
05:42
And I think that's...
05:43
And I think that's...
05:44
And I think that's...
05:45
And I think that's...
05:46
And I think that's...
05:47
And I think that's...
05:48
And I think that's...
05:49
And I think that's...
05:50
And I think that's...
05:51
And I think that's...
05:52
And I think that's...
05:53
And I think that's...
05:54
And I think that's...
05:55
And I think that's...
05:56
And I think that's...
05:57
And I think that's...
05:58
And I think that's...
05:59
And I think that's...
06:00
And I think that's...
06:01
And I think that's...
06:02
And I think that's...
06:03
And I think that's...
06:04
And I think that's...
06:05
And I think that's...
06:06
And I think that's...
06:07
And I think that's...
06:08
And I think that's...
06:09
And I think that's...
06:10
And I think that's...
06:11
And I think that's...
06:12
And I think that's...
