00:10and theft. We have been on the streets of Liverpool to find out if you have ever

00:14been a victim of a crime and if you were satisfied with Merseyside Police's

00:19response. I had my car stolen quite a while ago now, several years ago now, but yeah.

00:24I'm guessing you reported it to the police and everything? Oh yeah, yeah. And how did you find the police, were you happy with the way

00:29the police dealt with it? Oh yeah, definitely, yeah, no problems whatsoever.

00:32Well I understand that people don't report everything because you don't like

00:37it listened to, do you? So that's another reason why people don't report things.

00:42Yeah, you don't see a lot of police around at the moment. I was awake, came back to my

00:48house and my fence was down and I was told by a witness that it was to do

00:54with the people in the house next to me and to be honest the police wasn't

00:59helpful. They say it's not them. Everybody's holding their phones in their hands now and

01:04people shooting past now. I don't keep my hand in my hand.

01:10Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Home Secretary Yvette

01:14Cooper announced a crackdown on crime as part of the government's mission for

01:18safer streets. Ms Cooper pledged to introduce new powers to respond to

01:22antisocial behaviour, shoplifting and off-road bikes and put neighbourhood

01:26police back on the beat. The government plans legislation which will see an

01:30additional 13,000 police officers and PCSOs along with guaranteed local

01:35patrols. Though Merseyside saw an overall reduction in crime over the past 12

01:39months, there was an increase in one crime type. Shoplifting was up around 14%

01:46in our region and has risen by 29.3% nationally. Merseyside police say they're

01:51working with retailers every day to tackle this, providing targeted patrols

01:55and security advice and they have successfully obtained criminal behaviour

01:59orders.
