00:00The Social Democrats have won here in Brandenburg in state elections.

00:03They beat the far-right Alternative for Germany party into second place by less than 2%.

00:08So what have we learned from this state vote?

00:11The SPD can put behind them the big disappointments they had in Thuringia and Saxony,

00:16but only when their candidates go out of their way to distance themselves as much as possible

00:21from Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the ruling National Social Democratic Party.

00:26Number two.

00:27These elections have been incredibly popular.

00:2973% or so of the eligible two and a half million people cast a ballot

00:34in this particular vote.

00:35For the AFD, those supporting them, it was migration and it was the economy

00:39that topped their list.

00:40For everybody else, it was stopping the AFD from getting into power.

00:44The third thing we can take away from this vote is forming a coalition government in this state

00:50and perhaps looking ahead to next year's federal election.

00:52It's going to be incredibly tricky and it's going to involve some big compromises

00:56because nobody says they're willing to work with AFD.
