Typhoon Death Toll Rises in Myanmar

Myanmar's official death toll from Typhoon Yagi hits 113, with that number expected to rise.

00:00In rural Myanmar, retreating floodwaters leave muddy fields scattered with destruction.

00:05Typhoon Yagi shredded through a big chunk of Southeast Asia,

00:08but for this country, pounded by years of civil war, it's an especially hard blow.

00:13The death toll here alone is officially 113,

00:16and with roads and communications out, this could rise.

00:20At the Yado camp for internally displaced people,

00:22there was little neighbors could do for each other as the waters rose.

00:30When the floodwaters came in,

00:33we couldn't do anything,

00:38so we had to leave our homes.

00:42We didn't have a place to stay,

00:45so we had to leave our homes.

00:59Now, large numbers of people the war hadn't displaced are headed to camps too.

01:03The country's ruling junta says over 300,000 are already in these temporary relief camps.

01:09Belto, a resident of the Yado camp for displaced people,

01:12was lucky to escape the flooding with his life.

01:14But though he's lost nearly everything,

01:16he still feels for those who are now starting their own uncertain journey to camps like his.

01:59But with infrastructure out,

02:04it's a question of how fast this help can get to those who need it.
