Judicial reform proposed by President López Obrador moves forward in Mexico

On Tuesday, the process to reform Mexico's Judicial Branch began, and with it, to move forward with a change so that judges and Supreme Court justices are elected by popular vote. teleSUR

00:00The Mexican Chamber of Deputies approved in general on Wednesday the reform of the judicial

00:04branch by 359 votes in favor and 135 against after a session that lasted 11 hours.

00:11The session took place in an alternate headquarters due to protests that tried to prevent the

00:15session.

00:16The reform aims at democratizing the judicial system in the country by, among other things,

00:21establishing the election of ministers, duchess and magistrates and other public positions

00:25through popular vote, as well as the reduction of their term in office.

00:29Furthermore, under the principles of republican austerity, it intends to put a stop to the

00:34excessive and onerous expenses of the judiciary.
