French minister calls for EU, UK 'migration treaty' after latest Channel deaths

00:00As rescue workers responded to yet another deadly migrant crossing in the

00:04English Channel, France's Interior Minister reiterated calls for a

00:08migration treaty between Great Britain and the European Union.

00:13It is undoubtedly people from the Horn of Africa who have been affected by this

00:17tragedy who are going to Great Britain to join a family to work there sometimes

00:22in conditions that are not acceptable in France and it is important to re-

00:26establish a classic migratory relationship with our friend and

00:29neighbour Great Britain otherwise they will obviously not stop.

00:34UK officials were also quick to respond however they took a slightly different tact

00:38with the country's Interior Minister immediately criticising the smugglers

00:42and gangs behind what she said was a deeply tragic event. The incident

00:47reportedly took place when the less than seven metre long boat crammed with

00:51dozens of migrants run into trouble off the Cap Grinet. At least 12 people died

00:56adding to figures of at least 30 people who have died or gone missing this year

01:01while attempting the perilous crossing and more than 21,000 people who have

01:06completed the journey. To combat the issue former British Prime Minister

01:10Rishi Sunak forged a deal last year with President Emmanuel Macron to increase

01:15funding to France to a total of 541 million euros with the goal of increasing

01:20French law enforcement on the coast. But representatives of Osmo 62, a migrant

01:26aid association, said on Tuesday that the police presence is exacerbating the

01:31situation. We're devastated, we're powerless, we're shouting it loud and

01:37clear. The police are more and more present putting more and more pressure

01:43on them and people are taking more and more risk.

01:47Paris has been asking London for a migration treaty for more than two years

01:51according to the Interior Minister who said it will undoubtedly be a priority

01:55for the next French government when it is eventually instated.
