All right, kapuso!
00:02
Of course, a lot of people are inspired to do gymnastics
00:06
after the victory of the Philippines in Paris.
00:09
And this morning, we have exclusive lessons from an Olympic gymnast,
00:14
Ms. Suzy Ann Shira,
00:16
Gymnastics 101 partner. Let's go!
00:23
Hello, good morning!
00:25
Good morning! Good morning!
00:27
Good morning!
00:28
I'm so happy to be here with Shira.
00:30
This morning, we have young, inspiring, and hopeful gymnasts here.
00:35
We also have gymnasts who are scholars.
00:37
Yes, that's right.
00:38
Of course.
00:39
She's our special guest.
00:41
I agree.
00:42
We're very, very lucky today because she's here with us.
00:46
And of course, we won't miss the chance to ask her questions,
00:50
talk to her, and teach her.
00:52
That's right.
00:53
We're going to have fun.
00:54
That's why we're here.
00:55
Let's welcome everyone!
00:57
Ms. Levi Ruivivar!
01:03
Wow!
01:05
Stick it!
01:07
Stick it!
01:08
What an entrance, man!
01:10
Good morning!
01:12
Good morning, everyone!
01:14
First of all, congratulations and thank you for representing the Philippines
01:18
here at the Paris Olympics.
01:20
And how was the experience?
01:22
It was incredible.
01:24
I mean, where do I even start?
01:26
It was amazing just being able to go out there and showcase all the years of training
01:31
since I was 18 months old.
01:33
Oh my gosh!
01:34
18 months old.
01:35
How does that even work?
01:37
I don't even know.
01:38
You just learned how to walk?
01:39
I didn't even know what gymnastics was.
01:41
I mean, my mom just kind of, I had so much energy.
01:43
I was hanging off the furniture.
01:45
So, she's only 18 months old and she's already hanging herself.
01:47
For sure.
01:48
She said she was hanging herself.
01:50
So, maybe she was hanging herself when she was a kid.
01:52
That's so cute!
01:53
It became a dream.
01:54
Right.
01:55
And then you made it to the Olympics.
01:57
Alright, so how does it feel for you and the rest of your team?
02:01
It's like the first time in six decades that we had an artistic gymnastics representation
02:07
at the Olympics.
02:08
It was meant so much to me because, you know, when I first qualified to the Olympics,
02:13
I actually didn't know that.
02:15
And then someone told me that this is the first time in six decades that anyone's gone
02:20
to the Olympics for the Philippines.
02:22
And I think that it really meant a lot to me because, you know, it was always a dream of mine.
02:27
I know it's a dream of a lot of other Filipino athletes here today.
02:31
And I think because of that, it meant so much more to me.
02:35
And to be able to make that history for this country is just incredible.
02:39
And then to share that experience with everyone else in the Philippines too is amazing
02:43
because it makes other people excited, which makes me even more grateful and happy.
02:48
And we're so glad you're here.
02:50
And of course, because you're here, and these kids are seeing you,
02:53
and they know that the dream is real.
02:55
It's achievable.
02:56
It is.
02:57
I can't wait to go to the Olympics just like Levi.
03:00
And their age, the kids here.
03:03
Some of the kids here are close to your age.
03:05
You're 18, right?
03:06
Yup, I'm 18.
03:07
So this is the first of many Olympics maybe?
03:09
Hopefully.
03:11
How young were you when you started?
03:13
18 months.
03:14
18 months.
03:16
I can't actually walk.
03:18
I just started, and my parents were just like,
03:21
Do you want to do gymnastics?
03:22
I did not even know what it was.
03:24
And I was like, Yes, Mommy!
03:26
I can only say, meant to be Olympian.
03:29
And you enjoyed it through the years.
03:30
That's why you reached that level.
03:32
And of course, we're seeing the kids here behind you,
03:34
so inspired by you being here.
03:36
So they're doing their warm-ups.
03:38
There are still a lot of people interested in the Olympics,
03:41
I mean, sorry, in gymnastics.
03:42
Gymnastics.
03:44
Because of the great showing of our Olympians at the Olympics.
03:47
So what are they doing now?
03:49
They're doing a bit of their warm-up?
03:51
Right now, they are doing some splits.
03:53
As you can see, the coaches are making sure they are in the right posture.
03:58
What you want to see is make sure their toes are pointed,
04:00
their chest are up, their hips are square.
04:03
That's really important.
04:04
If you're doing beam or something, and your hips are crooked,
04:07
and you try to do a leap, you're going to fall off.
04:09
So that's why they're making sure their hips are square.
04:12
Is the beam the hardest? It looks the scariest.
04:14
The beam is the scariest, I would say.
04:17
The beam is 4 inches wide.
04:20
And it's also hard.
04:22
It's a hard surface, yeah.
04:23
If you miss the beam, and you slip down the side, and get bruises,
04:28
it's not very fun.
04:31
So that's what they should learn, right?
04:33
To focus.
04:34
And now, Ate, these kids are so lucky
04:37
because Levi himself is going to teach them.
04:42
This is our first gymnastics skill that they will learn.
04:46
Alright, I'll give you the mic.
04:48
There you go.
04:50
Alright girls, can I see some handstands, please?
04:54
And stand down.
04:58
Wow!
05:00
Wow!
05:04
We're going to talk to one of the aspiring gymnasts here.
05:07
Good morning, what's your name?
05:08
Hi, my name is Andy Valdes.
05:10
Andy Valdes.
05:11
Andy, how long have you been doing gymnastics?
05:13
I've been here in PGAA for 10 years already.
05:16
10 years!
05:17
Oh my gosh!
05:18
And how old were you when you started?
05:20
I started when I was 4, but I came to PGAA when I was 5.
05:23
Oh my gosh!
05:24
You're already old when you started.
05:26
Because she's 18 months.
05:27
Wow!
05:28
Wow, she's 4 years old.
05:30
What's your dream for yourself?
05:33
Right now, I don't have a necessary goal,
05:35
but I just want to do my best here in PGAA,
05:37
and serve my role as a gymnast here.
05:39
Nice.
05:40
What's your favorite routine in gymnastics?
05:42
Favorite routine, I have to say floor,
05:44
because it shows off my artistry,
05:47
and I have to say I have pretty good leaps in artistry.
05:50
I also want to have confidence, right?
05:52
I know what I can do, right?
05:54
I know what I'm good at.
05:55
How does it feel to meet Levi?
05:57
It's such an honor because she's been my idol for so long.
06:01
And seeing her in the Olympics,
06:03
representing the Philippines,
06:04
it's really amazing.
06:07
You've inspired a lot of young gymnasts, right?
06:11
The dream is real and achievable.
06:13
Maybe you can show us, Levi?
06:16
I heard you can do an amazing backflip.
06:18
There.
06:20
There, okay.
06:22
A beautiful line.
06:24
Wow!
06:28
That was gorgeous!
06:29
Look at her legs, her posture.
06:31
It's beautiful.
06:33
Her legs are beautiful, and the long line.
06:35
Usually, what does a judge look for?
06:37
How can you tell that you did a good job?
06:39
Because sometimes, when you guys are done with routine,
06:41
I can see on your faces that you know you did a good job.
06:44
That's very true.
06:45
We have a lot of time and energy into perfecting our gymnastics,
06:49
and you work with your coach in figuring out
06:51
what the judges are specifically looking for.
06:54
As you can see, when she went, she did an excellent job.
06:57
The judges would be, yeah, excellent job.
06:59
Wow!
07:02
The judges would give that a really good score
07:05
because she had a beautiful body line and posture
07:08
before she started this skill.
07:10
She's already beautiful.
07:12
Chest up, chin up, straight line,
07:14
her toe is pointed, her knee is straight.
07:17
It's like she's bending.
07:19
Yes.
07:20
For instance, if your foot is flexed,
07:23
and your knee is bent, that's a deduction.
07:25
If your toe is pointed and your leg is straight,
07:28
that's less of a deduction.
07:30
You get points taken away from your skill if it's bad.
07:33
Minus, minus, minus.
07:34
Whatever they see as a mistake, minus, minus.
07:36
All right.
07:37
Well, it was such a pleasure talking to you
07:39
and, of course, learning from you,
07:40
especially for the kids that we have here
07:42
who are aspiring Olympians maybe someday.
07:44
Thank you so much for joining us.
07:46
Thank you so much.
07:47
We wish you all the best.
07:49
All right, more training, more training.
07:51
Rubina Champ, thank you so much.
07:54
Thank you for joining us this morning.
07:58
Let's give a round of applause to Ms. Aliva.
08:02
Wow.
08:03
Okay.
08:04
All right.
08:05
All right, all right.
08:06
Let's try this, Ate.
08:07
Okay.
08:08
I can't do handstands.
08:09
Ready.
08:16
Yeah!
08:17
You did it, Ate!
08:20
Good thing you didn't jump.
08:23
Wow!
08:27
All right.
