Here at the Vitality Stadium where Newcastle United have drawn 1-1 with Bournemouth this
00:04
Sunday afternoon. 1-1 doesn't tell the full story as it rarely does in the Premier League,
00:11
but Eddie Howe said it was a fair result. I'd be inclined to agree with him, but I'm sure there
00:15
were possibly 10,000 there or thereabouts Bournemouth fans who will disagree based on
00:21
how things unfolded this afternoon. Newcastle actually started the game well, made two changes
00:27
from the side that beat Southampton last weekend with Emile Craft coming in for the suspended
00:32
Fabian Scheer and Lloyd Kelly making his debut, Lewis Hall dropping to the bench at left back.
00:39
Newcastle started the game well, were on the front foot, then somehow lost control of the game,
00:45
Bournemouth came into it. Their pace and intensity pushing forward really caused Newcastle some
00:51
problems and unfortunately Bournemouth took the lead through a mistake really. Joe Linton concedes
00:58
possession on the edge of the area, ball goes out wide, low ball in to Marcus Tavernier who
01:05
taps it in, can't miss, against his former club. He was briefly at Newcastle's academy as a youngster
01:12
but yeah, that gave Bournemouth the lead and Bournemouth probably deserved it for the best part
01:15
of an hour anyway. They were the better team other than the maybe first 15 minutes or so.
01:21
So yeah, for the majority of the game Bournemouth were probably the better side but Newcastle made
01:26
changes. You saw Ciaran Tribiac come on for Tino Liveromento, Lewis Hall came on for Lloyd Kelly
01:32
and all of a sudden Newcastle were 10 yards further up the pitch. Harvey Bonds came on as well for
01:38
Jacob Murphy and then Anthony Gordon switched to the right side, Harvey Bonds on the left and Harvey
01:43
Bonds was Newcastle's best player for the final 20-25 minutes and really making an impact, came
01:49
close to scoring himself, then put a great ball in, Anthony Gordon who's had another frustrating
01:55
game up until this point, great finish at the back post to draw Newcastle level and then Bournemouth
02:00
had a couple of good chances straight after but then Newcastle looked like the side who would
02:05
go on to win it. Big chances, Nedo Bournemouth had the goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the
02:12
game, saving from Alexander Isak, from Joe Linton, from Dan Byrne, really Newcastle should have found
02:19
a winner from Bruno even in stoppage time but then it was actually Bournemouth who thought
02:23
they'd won it and I thought they'd won it, Newcastle players thought they'd won it, Eddie Howe thought
02:27
they'd won it. Corner, deep in stoppage time, Dango Wotora gets the ball in, I said he headed
02:38
the ball in, I thought he did, actually hits off his shoulder or his upper arm and that is deemed
02:44
on-field decision, a goal by David Coote but VAR know that is a handball by the letter of the law
02:52
so must be disallowed and yeah I think if Newcastle score that goal we're kicking up a fuss,
02:58
we're being very frustrated given the timing of it all and it was very close to the top of his arm
03:05
but ultimately a handball, even watching the replays I wasn't overly convinced at the time,
03:10
it wasn't until the VAR check was confirmed by handball where you go actually okay fair enough
03:15
and then yeah Bournemouth fans not happy at all, can see why but welcome surprises Eddie Howe put
03:24
it in the closing stages, it's Newcastle who possibly felt if the game had ended 1-1 they
03:31
would have been a little bit frustrated but then because of that VAR decision they come away
03:35
going look maybe got away with one a little bit there, it's another point, in the right
03:41
direction and now two games unbeaten, two games into the season and away from home Bournemouth
03:48
who Newcastle have not beat under Eddie Howe in the Premier League at least so yeah all in all
03:55
probably a fair result but yeah the last 15 minutes where Newcastle equalised looked like
03:59
they were gonna really turn the screw and then Bournemouth out of nowhere forced a late corner
04:05
and think they've won it and then all of a sudden no still 1-1 and Newcastle head home
04:10
longest journey home in the Premier League other than the reverse fixture Bournemouth will have to
04:15
do at St James' Park later in the season, they head home with a point and now look ahead to
04:20
Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, Eddie Howe hopeful there'll be new signings
04:27
before Friday's deadline day but wouldn't commit to anything in terms of names or anything like
04:35
that typical Eddie Howe sort of non-descript transfer update hopeful but not expecting so
04:41
yeah hopefully in the words of Eddie Howe we'll see some transfer activity in the coming days
04:46
will that be Mark Gay, will that be someone else, will we see a surprise some players could leave
04:51
the club and I thought it was interesting the goalkeeper situation today Martin de Brabca was
04:56
left at home with a concussion according to the club picked up in training but Odysseus
05:02
Vlachadimos new signing you would expect him to come in but actually no it was John Ruddy who came
05:09
on to the bench and Max Thompson an academy goalkeeper traveled with the first team as well
05:15
so yeah we'll see what comes of that the goalkeeping situation certainly a bit of a head
05:19
scratcher but certainly not the big talking point from today because Newcastle have come away from
05:24
Bournemouth still flattering to deceive in the Premier League so far last week was a bit of a
05:30
write-off in terms of the performance just because they were reduced to 10 men but today
05:35
you'd expect better from them given the quality players they had on the pitch but I thought
05:41
once the changes were made once Kieran Trippier came on once Lewis Hall came on Harvey Barnes as
05:47
well Joe Willock came on as well for Shaun Longstaff there was a lot more intent about
05:50
Newcastle and there were a lot more recognisable so some room for encouragement there the point
05:57
you take it given the circumstances and hopefully move on get through in the cup midweek get a
06:04
signing or two in before Friday's deadline and then you all of a sudden heading into that Spurs
06:09
game at St James's Park next Sunday with a bit of positivity because at the moment it's
06:14
it's been maybe underwhelming in terms of the performances but ultimately a positive start to
06:18
the season in terms of results where Newcastle sitting fifth which far too early to do that but
06:26
if they finish the season they'll probably be fairly happy with that so yeah we'll have all
06:31
the reaction from Eddie Howe to come the player ratings everything like that and also looking
06:37
ahead to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night over on the Shields Gazette so be sure to check that out
