In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you.
00:21
Welcome to Mass, wherever you might be today. We're celebrating the Feast of St. Bernard of Clairvaux today.
00:29
He was born about 1090, excuse me. And when he was about 21, 22, he went off and joined the Benedictine Monastery.
00:44
And over a few years he became a bit disenchanted with the affluence of the Benedictine Order at the time.
00:54
And he and some others began their own kind of community, and that grew over a period of time.
01:06
There were several of those communities that were looking for a more purified form of the Benedictine Order, if you like.
01:14
So today we stand in God's presence and ask him to give us that sense of fidelity, and we ask for his forgiveness.
01:32
Lord, you are our model of fidelity. Lord, have mercy. Lord, you are our model of humility. Christ, have mercy.
01:43
And Lord, you are our model of unconditional love. Lord, have mercy.
01:49
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to life everlasting. Let us pray.
01:58
O God, who made of the abbot St. Bernard a man consumed with zeal for your house, and a light shining and burning in your church,
02:08
grant through his intercession that we may be on fire with the same spirit, and walk always as children of light.
02:18
And we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
02:25
The first reading today is from the Old Testament, from the book of Ecclesiasticus.
02:32
It says, Whatever fears the Lord will act, whoever fears the Lord will act like this, and whoever grasps the law will obtain wisdom.
02:45
She will come to meet him like a mother, and receive him like a virgin bride.
02:52
She will give him the bread of understanding to eat, and the water of wisdom to drink.
02:58
He will lean on her and will not fall. He will rely on her and not be put to shame.
03:07
She will raise him high above his neighbours, and in full assembly she will open his mouth.
03:14
He will find happiness in the crown of joy. He will inherit an everlasting name.
03:23
The word of the Lord.
03:26
And our response to the psalms of today is simply, Lord, teach me your decrees.
03:32
Lord, teach me your decrees.
03:36
How shall the young remain sinless? By obeying your word.
03:41
I have sought you with all my heart, let me not stray from your commands.
03:47
Lord, teach me your decrees.
03:51
I treasure your promise in my heart, lest I sin against you.
03:55
Blessed are you, O Lord, teach me your statutes.
03:59
Lord, teach me your decrees.
04:03
With my tongue I have recounted the decrees of your lips.
04:07
I rejoice to do your will, as though all riches were mine.
04:13
Lord, teach me your decrees.
04:17
And we greet the Gospel.
04:19
Alleluia, alleluia.
04:21
Remain in my love, says the Lord.
04:24
All who live in me and I in them will bear much fruit.
04:29
Alleluia.
04:36
The Lord be with you.
04:38
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
04:45
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,
04:50
Holy Father, I pray not only for these,
04:55
but for those also who through their words will believe in me.
05:01
May they all be one.
05:04
Father, may they be one in us as you are in me and I am in you,
05:13
so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.
05:18
I have given them the glory you gave to me,
05:22
that they may be one as we are one.
05:27
With me in them and you in me, may they be so completely one
05:32
that the world will realize that it was you who sent me
05:36
and that I've loved them as much as you loved me.
05:41
Father, I want those you've given me to be with me where I am,
05:48
so that they may always see the glory you've given me
05:51
because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
05:56
Father, righteous one, the world has not known you,
06:00
but I have known you and these have known that you have sent me.
06:06
I've made your name known to them and will continue to make it known
06:12
so that the love with which you love me may be in them
06:18
and so that I may be in them.
06:24
The Gospel of the Lord.
06:32
Blessed you, Lord God of all creation,
06:34
through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you.
06:37
Bread of the earth and work of human hands,
06:39
it will become for us the bread of life.
06:43
By the mystery of this water and wine,
06:45
may we come to share in the divinity of Christ
06:53
who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
07:05
Blessed you, Lord God of all creation,
07:07
through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you.
07:09
Fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
07:12
it will become our spiritual drink.
07:16
Lord God, we ask you to receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you
07:19
with humble and contrite hearts.
07:21
Lord, wash away my iniquity, cleanse me from my sin.
07:35
Pray now, my brothers and sisters,
07:36
that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
07:46
We offer unto your majesty, O Lord,
07:48
the sacrament of unity and peace
07:52
as we celebrate the memorial of the abbot Saint Bernard,
07:58
a man outstanding in word and deed
08:00
who strove to bring order and concord to your church.
08:06
And we ask this through Christ our Lord.
08:10
The Lord be with you.
08:14
Lift up your hearts and let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
08:20
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation
08:23
always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord,
08:25
Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God,
08:28
through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, your Word,
08:31
through whom you made all things,
08:32
whom you sent as our Saviour and our Redeemer,
08:35
incarnate by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary,
08:39
fulfilling your will and gaining for you a holy people.
08:43
He stretched out his hands as he endured his passion
08:46
so as to break the bonds of death and manifest the resurrection.
08:51
And so the angels and saints will declare your glory
08:54
as with one voice we acclaim,
08:57
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts,
09:01
heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest.
09:05
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
09:07
Hosanna in the highest.
09:14
You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
09:17
Make holy, therefore, these years, we pray,
09:19
by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
09:23
so that they may become for us
09:24
the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
09:28
At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion,
09:32
he took bread, and giving thanks, he broke it
09:34
and gave it to his disciples, saying,
09:36
Take this, all of you, and eat of it.
09:39
For this is my body, which will be given up for you.
09:53
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
10:05
he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks,
10:07
he gave it to his disciples, saying,
10:09
Take this, all of you, and drink from it.
10:11
For this is the chalice of my blood,
10:14
the blood of the new and eternal covenant,
10:16
which will be poured out for you and for many,
10:20
for the forgiveness of sins.
10:22
Do this in memory of me.
10:40
The mystery of faith.
10:42
When we eat this bread and drink this cup,
10:44
we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
10:48
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection,
10:52
we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation,
10:56
giving thanks that you have held us worthy
10:58
to be in your presence and to minister to you.
11:02
Humbly, we pray, partaking of the body and blood of Christ,
11:06
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
11:10
Remember, Lord, your Church spread throughout the world.
11:14
Bring her to the fullness of charity,
11:16
together with Francis, our Pope, Charles, our Bishop,
11:20
all the clergy, and the whole of God's people.
11:24
Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep
11:27
in the hope of the resurrection,
11:29
and all who have died in your mercy.
11:32
Welcome them into the light of your face.
11:37
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
11:39
and with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
11:41
Saint Joseph, her spouse, the blessed apostles,
11:44
and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
11:47
we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life,
11:51
and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
11:57
Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, Almighty Father,
12:00
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
12:02
all glory and honour is yours, forever and ever.
12:09
And we might like now to pray the beautiful prayer
12:12
that Jesus himself taught us to pray as a family.
12:16
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
12:21
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
12:26
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
12:31
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
12:34
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
12:38
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil.
12:41
Graciously grant peace in our day, for by the help of your mercy,
12:46
we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress,
12:50
as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
12:56
For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
13:00
Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles,
13:03
Peace I leave you, my peace I give you.
13:06
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church,
13:10
and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will,
13:14
to live and reign forever and ever.
13:17
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
13:21
Let us take a moment and offer each other a sign of peace.
13:25
Peace now, wherever you may be.
13:30
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
13:35
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
13:40
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
13:54
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
14:02
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
14:06
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
14:10
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
14:14
but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
14:19
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most blessed sacrament.
14:24
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
14:29
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
14:35
I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you.
14:40
Never permit me to be separated from you.
14:43
Amen.
14:44
Let us pray.
14:49
May the food we have received, O Lord, as we honour Saint Bernard, work its effect in us,
14:58
so that, strengthened by his example and instructed by his teaching,
15:04
we may be caught up in the love of your incarnate Word, Jesus Christ.
15:10
The love of your incarnate Word, Jesus Christ, lives and reigns with you forever and ever.
15:18
The Lord be with you.
15:20
May almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
15:26
Let us go in peace now to love and serve the Lord.
15:34
Thank you, everybody.
15:35
I hope you have an absolutely beautiful day.
15:38
God bless.
15:40
Amen.
