00:51On Friday, August 16, Branch 5 of the Baguio City Regional Trial Court convicts Shalimar

00:56Imperial Jr. and Felix Lumbag Jr. of murder and Julius Carlo Tadena of violating the anti-hazing

01:03law.

01:04All three were a batch ahead of 20-year-old Dormitorio when he died in September 2019

01:09from serious injuries inflicted by his fellow cadets.

01:12The incident exposed the long-entrenched culture of hazing in the country's top military school

01:17which is run by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

01:20The court orders Imperial and Lumbag to each pay 3 million pesos in fines and Tadena to

01:25pay 2 million pesos.

01:27They are all sentenced to reclusion perpetua.

01:32Reacting to public backlash, the National Economic and Development Authority or NEDA

01:36says the government's 21-peso food poverty threshold is not a budget recommendation.

01:41Instead, NEDA chief Arsenio Balisacan says the government only uses such figures to measure

01:46food poverty and make policies.

01:49They were, quote, never intended to be prescribed budgets for a decent standard of living.

01:54The 21-peso per meal threshold stirred controversy after senators questioned it in a budget hearing

01:59earlier this week.

02:01People on social media said it was nowhere near the price of a decent meal.

02:05The latest report from the Philippine Statistics Authority says food poverty in the country

02:09fell from 5.9% in 2021 to 4.3% in 2023.

02:16MEDA shuts down the analytics tool CrowdTangle despite researchers pleased to keep it.

02:22The social media giant pushed through with the plan on Wednesday, August 14, despite

02:26a petition from researchers, interest groups, and journalists, including Rappler.

02:31The petitioners had asked MEDA to keep CrowdTangle until the end of the year and to maintain

02:36a similar approach with future tools.

02:39MEDA instead announced a replacement called Metacontent Library and its Application Programming

02:43Interface or API.

02:46Reports say access to Metacontent Library will be limited to only several hundred researchers.

02:51Researchers are ineligible to apply unless they're part of a non-profit or partnered

02:55with a research institution.

02:57CrowdTangle had been useful in tracking and understanding how information and disinformation

03:01spread through Facebook and Instagram.

03:06Fresh from his fourth-place finish in the Paris Olympics, Filipino pole vault star EJ

03:10Obiena falls to number three in the sports global ranking.

03:14In World Athletics' latest rankings released Tuesday, August 13, Obiena lost his number

03:19two position to the USA's Sam Kendricks.

03:22Kendricks bagged silver in the Olympics.

03:24World record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden keeps the top spot, while Olympic bronze medalist

03:29Emmanuel Karalis of Greece climbs from number eight to number four.

03:34Obiena held on to number two for nearly a year.

03:37He later revealed he was bothered by back issues that affected not just his performance

03:41but also his Olympic preparations.

03:43But he already has plans to bounce back.

03:46Obiena is set to compete in the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League in Switzerland on

03:50August 21.

03:51He's also organizing a world-class pole vault meet in Makati on September 20.
