00:00The government is now alerted to the increasing number of cases of leptospirosis in hospitals in Metro Manila.

00:05And now that it's still raining, it's expected that this will continue to increase.

00:17Susan, there's been a few storms, but the case of leptospirosis is now under control.

00:23Here at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute,

00:26an extension ward is needed because of the increasing number of patients with leptospirosis.

00:33That's what's being reported here in Quezon City.

00:38This is the situation now at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute or NKTI in Quezon City.

00:43Their 60-bed capacity emergency ward has reached the gym

00:48because of the number of patients affected by leptospirosis.

00:52An extension ward is needed.

00:54One of the patients affected by leptospirosis is 53-year-old Mang Joven.

00:59His house was flooded with water in Taguig City.

01:02He didn't think that his wet feet would lead him home from leptospirosis.

01:07Wow, this is really painful.

01:11It's almost like I'm going to kill you if you don't move.

01:17Joven is just one of the 51 patients admitted to NKTI because of leptospirosis.

01:22And 67 of the patients here are under dialysis.

01:27It's really worrying because it's a health concern.

01:30It's an environmental concern.

01:33The bed capacity is not also enough.

01:36And if you have an increase in bed capacity, you also need a health worker.

01:41One of the big challenges they are facing now is the lack of staff.

01:46And today, the Philippine Red Cross has increased the number of medical volunteers

01:52to assist the patients.

01:55You should know that leptospirosis is caused by a bacteria called leptospira

01:59from the mouth of a fish.

02:01Most of the patients affected by leptospirosis are those who drowned in the flood.

02:05The Department of Health or DOH has issued a memorandum

02:09where all hospitals, particularly in the National Capital Region,

02:13should increase their leptospirosis surge capacity plan.

02:23According to the DOH, the incubation of leptospirosis is from 2 days to 30 days.

02:28So for those of us who drowned in the flood,

02:31it's important for you to visit and take medicine like doxycycline

02:37instead of feeling worse symptoms,

02:40go to the hospital, and worse comes to worse, get dialysis.
