Hi kids, in the last lessons we learned what are fractions, like fractions, unlike fractions,
00:13
proper fractions, improper fractions, and unit fractions.
00:22
Today we will learn comparing like fractions, so let's get started.
00:29
There are some like fractions, that is fractions with the same denominators.
00:37
How will you compare them or tell which fraction is bigger and which one is smaller?
00:45
We can do it visually, like this.
00:50
First draw the fractions 1 by 8.
00:56
We know 1 by 8 means 1 part out of 8 equal parts, so we can draw it like this.
01:06
2 by 8 means 2 parts out of 8 parts, so we can draw it like this.
01:17
Similarly we can draw all the like fractions.
01:23
Now if I ask you which of the fractions is largest, you can visually judge and reply
01:32
that 7 by 8 is the largest fraction.
01:38
And if I ask you which of the fractions is smallest, you can visually judge and reply
01:46
that 1 by 8 is the smallest fraction.
01:52
So this was the visual method of comparing like fractions.
01:58
Now we will be learning another method of comparing like fractions.
02:06
From the visual method of comparing like fractions, we saw that smaller the numerator, the smaller
02:14
the fraction.
02:16
So the other way of comparing fractions is to just compare the numerators.
02:23
And the smaller the numerator, the smaller the fraction.
02:28
Now let's see some examples.
02:32
2 by 4 is bigger or smaller than 3 by 4.
02:39
We have learned when we have to compare like fractions, we will compare the numerators.
02:47
And here 2 is smaller than 3.
02:52
So 2 by 4 is smaller than 3 by 4.
02:59
You can verify your answer by visually drawing the fractions.
03:04
3 by 4 means 3 parts out of 4 parts.
03:10
And 2 by 4 means 2 parts out of 4 parts.
03:17
Here you can visually verify that 3 by 4 is a bigger fraction than 2 by 4.
03:26
Good!
03:28
Let's take another example.
03:32
4 by 6 is bigger or smaller than 2 by 6.
03:38
We know we have to just compare the numerators as they are like fractions.
03:46
That is, their denominators are the same.
03:51
Here 2 is less than 4.
03:54
So 2 by 6 is less than 4 by 6.
04:00
You can verify your answer by visually drawing the fractions.
04:07
4 by 6 means 4 parts out of 6 equal parts.
04:13
2 by 6 means 2 parts out of 6 equal parts.
04:20
So we can visually see that 4 by 6 is a bigger fraction than 2 by 6.
04:28
Good!
04:30
So what have we learned?
04:32
We have learned that to compare the like fractions, we have to compare their numerators.
04:40
The smaller the numerator, the smaller the fraction.
04:44
Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
04:48
Bye-bye!
