00:18Let's first learn what are improper fractions.

00:22Fractions where the numerator is equal to or greater than denominator are called improper

00:28fractions.

00:31These are examples of improper fractions as the numerator is equal to denominator.

00:39These are also examples of improper fractions as the numerator is bigger than denominator.

00:47So remember, in proper fractions, numerator is either equal or bigger than denominator.

00:55Any improper fraction can be converted to mixed fraction by dividing the numerator with

01:06Here, we have an improper fraction 5 by 4.

01:12Now let's see how an improper fraction can be converted to mixed fraction.

01:19If we divide 5 with 4, we get 1 as remainder.

01:26What does it mean?

01:28It means, suppose we have to distribute 5 apples among 4 children, then each child will

01:36get 1 whole apple and 1 apple will be again divided among 4 children.

01:45And each child will get 1 fourth of that apple.

01:49So each child will get 1 whole apple and also a slice which is 1 fourth of an apple.

02:07One quotient means 1 whole apple for each child.

02:12That is, each child will get 1 whole apple for sure.

02:18One remainder means 1 apple will be left and that can be again divided among 4 children.

02:27That is, each child will also get a slice which is 1 fourth of an apple.

02:34So the share of each child is 1 whole apple and a slice which is 1 fourth of an apple.

02:43So 5 by 4 is same as 1, 1 by 4.

02:49Here, 5 by 4 was an improper fraction and we have converted it to mixed fraction.

02:57Let's see more examples of how we convert improper fractions to mixed fraction.

03:03The next fraction is 8 by 6.

03:07We have to convert 8 by 6 to mixed fraction.

03:12Divide the numerator by denominator.

03:16Dividing 8 by 6, we get 1 as quotient and 2 as remainder which means 1 whole number

03:26and 2 will again have to be divided by 6.

03:33That is, if we have to divide 8 things among 6 persons, then each person will get 1 whole

03:39thing and a part which will be 2 by 6 portion of a whole thing.

03:46So we can write it as 1, 2 by 6.

03:51So 8 by 6 is same as 1, 2 by 6.

04:00Here is another improper fraction, 35 by 8 which implies dividing 35 objects among

04:12If we divide 35 by 8, we get 4 as quotient which means each person will get 4 whole objects.

04:22We also get 3 as remainder which means 3 things will again have to be divided among 8 persons.

04:31So, if we divide 35 objects among 8 persons, each person will get 4 whole objects and remaining

04:423 objects will again have to be divided among 8 persons.

04:47We write it like this, 4, 3 by 8.

04:53So this is mixed fraction for 35 by 8.

04:58Now, let's see how we convert back mixed fractions to improper fraction.

05:05This is a mixed fraction.

05:08If we have to convert it to an improper fraction, denominator will remain the same.

05:16And for numerator, multiply denominator with the whole number and add numerator to it,

05:23like here.

05:26We will multiply 8 with 4 and add 3 to it.

05:318 multiplied by 4 is 32 and adding 3 to it, we get 35.

05:4035 by 8 is the improper fraction for this mixed fraction.

05:54Let's convert it to improper fraction.

05:57We know denominator remains the same.

06:01And for numerator, we multiply denominator with whole number and then add the numerator

06:13Multiply 6 with 1 and then add 2 to it.

06:176 multiplied with 1 is 6 and adding 2 to it, we get 8.
