Hi kids, today we will learn how we can convert improper fractions to mixed fractions and
00:09
mixed fractions to improper fractions.
00:13
So let's get started.
00:18
Let's first learn what are improper fractions.
00:22
Fractions where the numerator is equal to or greater than denominator are called improper
00:28
fractions.
00:31
These are examples of improper fractions as the numerator is equal to denominator.
00:39
These are also examples of improper fractions as the numerator is bigger than denominator.
00:47
So remember, in proper fractions, numerator is either equal or bigger than denominator.
00:55
Any improper fraction can be converted to mixed fraction by dividing the numerator with
01:01
denominator.
01:04
Let's see how.
01:06
Here, we have an improper fraction 5 by 4.
01:12
Now let's see how an improper fraction can be converted to mixed fraction.
01:19
If we divide 5 with 4, we get 1 as remainder.
01:26
What does it mean?
01:28
It means, suppose we have to distribute 5 apples among 4 children, then each child will
01:36
get 1 whole apple and 1 apple will be again divided among 4 children.
01:45
And each child will get 1 fourth of that apple.
01:49
So each child will get 1 whole apple and also a slice which is 1 fourth of an apple.
02:00
We write the share of each child like this.
02:05
Let's see it again.
02:07
One quotient means 1 whole apple for each child.
02:12
That is, each child will get 1 whole apple for sure.
02:18
One remainder means 1 apple will be left and that can be again divided among 4 children.
02:27
That is, each child will also get a slice which is 1 fourth of an apple.
02:34
So the share of each child is 1 whole apple and a slice which is 1 fourth of an apple.
02:43
So 5 by 4 is same as 1, 1 by 4.
02:49
Here, 5 by 4 was an improper fraction and we have converted it to mixed fraction.
02:57
Let's see more examples of how we convert improper fractions to mixed fraction.
03:03
The next fraction is 8 by 6.
03:07
We have to convert 8 by 6 to mixed fraction.
03:12
Divide the numerator by denominator.
03:16
Dividing 8 by 6, we get 1 as quotient and 2 as remainder which means 1 whole number
03:26
and 2 will again have to be divided by 6.
03:33
That is, if we have to divide 8 things among 6 persons, then each person will get 1 whole
03:39
thing and a part which will be 2 by 6 portion of a whole thing.
03:46
So we can write it as 1, 2 by 6.
03:51
So 8 by 6 is same as 1, 2 by 6.
03:58
Let's see another example.
04:00
Here is another improper fraction, 35 by 8 which implies dividing 35 objects among
04:10
8 persons.
04:12
If we divide 35 by 8, we get 4 as quotient which means each person will get 4 whole objects.
04:22
We also get 3 as remainder which means 3 things will again have to be divided among 8 persons.
04:31
So, if we divide 35 objects among 8 persons, each person will get 4 whole objects and remaining
04:42
3 objects will again have to be divided among 8 persons.
04:47
We write it like this, 4, 3 by 8.
04:53
So this is mixed fraction for 35 by 8.
04:58
Now, let's see how we convert back mixed fractions to improper fraction.
05:05
This is a mixed fraction.
05:08
If we have to convert it to an improper fraction, denominator will remain the same.
05:16
And for numerator, multiply denominator with the whole number and add numerator to it,
05:23
like here.
05:26
We will multiply 8 with 4 and add 3 to it.
05:31
8 multiplied by 4 is 32 and adding 3 to it, we get 35.
05:40
35 by 8 is the improper fraction for this mixed fraction.
05:47
Now let's see another example.
05:50
Here we have a mixed fraction.
05:54
Let's convert it to improper fraction.
05:57
We know denominator remains the same.
06:01
And for numerator, we multiply denominator with whole number and then add the numerator
06:07
to it, so here.
06:13
Multiply 6 with 1 and then add 2 to it.
06:17
6 multiplied with 1 is 6 and adding 2 to it, we get 8.
06:24
So, 8 by 6 is the improper fraction for this mixed fraction.
06:31
So kids, now you know what are improper fractions, how to convert them to mixed fraction, and
06:39
how to convert that mixed fraction to improper fraction.
06:44
Now let's see why improper fractions are so called.
06:50
Improper means not proper, that is, they are not proper fractions.
06:57
Proper fractions means less than a whole.
07:01
And improper fractions denote something which is not less than whole, but they represent
07:07
something which is more than a whole.
07:11
Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
07:14
Bye-bye!
