00:00You know, more broadly, some Republicans have criticized Democrats for calling Donald Trump
00:05a threat to democracy, saying that type of rhetoric is to blame for the events unfolding
00:12on Saturday.
00:13What do you make of those takes?
00:15Yeah, I mean, I think a couple of things.
00:20One is, I don't know, you know, again, whether those kinds of comments fueled what this guy
00:27was thinking at the time he picked up the AR and went on to that roof and then took
00:32a shot at at the presidential nominee.
00:36But, you know, at the end of the day, I think it's important for us to also make sure that,
00:42you know, we're going to have disagreements and they're going to be substantive.
00:46And I think, you know, I think it's OK for us to do that.
00:49You know, there's an old saying, it's it's not important for us to think the same, but
00:55it is important for us to think together.
00:57And I think that that's what needs to happen in Washington.
01:00We're going to have disagreements.
01:02Democrats are still going to be Democrats.
01:03Republicans are still going to be Republicans.
01:05And rightly so.
01:06I mean, that's what this American process is supposed to be.
01:11The separation of powers, the competition of the free market of ideas, there's supposed
01:15to be disagreements.
01:17We just have to make sure we resolve them in the way that the framers set up.
01:21And that's through the political process.
01:23You know, it's ballots, not bullets is the way we need to go.
01:27It's really no secret that temperatures are at an all time high in this election.
01:31This what we saw Saturday was the first attempted assassination in this country of a presidential
01:36candidate since 1981.
01:38Regardless of party, what's your message to your constituents and Americans, both Democrats
01:44and Republicans?
01:45Yeah, I mean, it was a scary moment for a variety of reasons, and, you know, I also
01:52don't want to gloss over the fact that even though, you know, President, presidential
01:57nominee Trump did not get seriously injured, a man lost his life on Saturday and two others
02:03were seriously injured.
02:04So we want to make sure we keep that in our minds and those families in our minds and
02:10hearts as well.
02:11But, you know, I think it's important for us to make sure that we understand the magnitude
02:17of this moment.
02:18This is a pivotal election.
02:20I do think there are a lot of issues on the ballot that are going to be really important
02:26for the United States moving forward.
02:28Abortion and, you know, reproductive rights is one of those, for example.
02:32I think there are others as well, for sure.
02:35Voting rights, civil rights, criminal justice reform.
02:38I know people want to make sure that even though the economy is doing well, that they
02:42benefit as well, too.
02:44And, you know, managing the prescription drug prices.
02:48I think the cap on the cost of insulin was a big step.
02:51There's a lot of concern about the cost of gas and groceries.
02:56Inflation is turning around, but it hasn't gone far enough.
02:59Unemployment is way down.
03:00I mean, these are the kinds of issues, pocketbook issues in particular, that most voters have
03:05on their minds.
03:06And I think we have to find a way, we as Democrats in particular, to speak directly to that.
03:11And I think President Biden needs to talk to them about what he's going to do to try
03:16and make their lives better and what his vision for the country is moving forward.
