00:05a phenomenon primarily driven by human activities.
00:09Kenya Alliance of Resident Association, CARA, defines global warming as a slow
00:15increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere.
00:19Here are ways in which human activities drives global warming.
00:24Burning fossil fuels. The combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas for energy and transportation
00:31releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
00:39Deforestation. Cutting down forests for agriculture, logging, and urban development reduces
00:45the number of trees that can absorb CO2, increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
00:52Agricultural practices, particularly livestock farming, produce methane and nitrous oxide,
01:00both potent greenhouse gases. The use of fertilizers also releases nitrous oxide.
01:06We also have waste management. Decomposing waste in landfills produces methane
01:12and waste incineration emits CO2 and other pollutants.
01:16Land use changes. Urbanization and changes in land can also affect local climates
01:23and reduce the Earth's ability to sequester carbon.
01:27Last but not least, we have transportation. Vehicles powered by fossil fuels emit CO2
01:34and other greenhouse gases. The increase in global transportation
01:38has significantly contributed to higher atmospheric CO2 levels.
01:44Preventing global warming involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions
01:49and enhancing carbon sequestration. Here are some key strategies.
01:54Transition to renewable energy. Increase the use of renewable energy sources like solar,
02:01wind, and hydroelectric power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
02:06Energy efficiency. Improve energy efficiency in homes, buildings,
02:11and transportation through better insulation, energy-efficient applications,
02:17and fuel-efficient vehicles. Transition to renewable energy.
02:21Increase the use of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power
02:27to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Reduce reuse recycle.
02:32Minimize waste production and increase recycling to lower methane emissions from landfills
02:39and reduce the need for new materials, which often require significant energy to produce.
02:46To promote public transportation. Enhance and encourage the use of public transportation,
02:52biking, and walking to reduce emissions from individual car use.
02:56Carbon pricing. Implement carbon pricing mechanisms,
03:00such as carbon taxes or cap-and-trade systems, to incentivize reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
03:09Support clean technologies. Invest in and support the development and deployment of
03:15clean technologies such as electric vehicles and carbon capture and storage.
03:21Policy and legislation. Enact and enforce policies and regulations that limit greenhouse
03:28gas emissions and promote sustainable practices at local, national, and international levels.
03:35At the very last, educate and raise awareness. Increase public awareness about the causes
03:41and effects of global warming and the actions individuals and communities can take to mitigate it.
