If I can, I want to sleep a bit more.
00:02
I don't want to sleep more, I have slept enough.
00:05
Kepoh, go TikTok, then read, whatever.
00:08
How to make coffee, some cooking lessons.
00:12
Arts and crafts, arts and crafts.
00:14
And even gardening also.
00:16
Stress levels in Singapore have steadily climbed over the last two years.
00:21
According to a recent study,
00:22
close to nine in ten people have felt stressed in 2023.
00:26
This is seven percentage points more than the global average.
00:30
Despite this, Singapore ranked the happiest country in Asia
00:33
and 30th globally on the 2024 World Happiness Report.
00:37
So, how are Singaporeans de-stressing outside of work?
00:41
And how much are they spending to do it?
00:44
Asia One recently did a survey with 1,340 valid responses
00:49
and found that the most common activity respondents do
00:51
during their free time over the weekend was watching videos,
00:55
with almost a quarter of them doing so regardless of age.
00:58
This was far ahead of things like shopping, reading or journaling,
01:02
afternoon tea or dinner dates, outdoor sports and fitness,
01:06
and cooking or baking.
01:07
Respondents were most likely to say that they were most comfortable
01:10
doing these activities with family members,
01:13
followed by just themselves, then with close friends.
01:16
In terms of what respondents got out of these activities,
01:19
reducing stress was what was most commonly quoted,
01:22
followed by being able to bond with loved ones
01:25
and having fun.
01:27
The median amount spent per month on leisure was $101 to $200.
01:32
About a quarter of these respondents spent more than $500,
01:36
with a third of those aged 55 to 64 spending upwards of $1,000 per month.
01:42
40% of total respondents had less than five hours of free time per week,
01:46
with those aged 24 and below having the least amount of free time.
01:50
In comparison, the median number of hours free per week
01:53
was highest among those 55 to 64 at 16 to 20 hours per week.
01:59
If given an extra two free days a week,
02:02
around a third of respondents would choose to sleep more or do more of the same.
02:06
If respondents had the time, cooking or baking, learning a new language
02:10
and picking up digital or tech skills
02:12
topped the list of what they would choose as a new skill or hobby.
02:16
To expand on our findings, we headed out to find out
02:19
what leisurely activities Singaporeans were doing in their free time.
02:23
I enjoy sports. I play soccer.
02:26
I like to exercise.
02:28
I like to go to K-pop, go to TikTok,
02:31
then read whatever is available.
02:34
Then K-pop, I read about celebrities and all that.
02:37
I do have free time. Now, I'm giving piano lessons.
02:41
I have a son, so we go out. We go to mall and eat.
02:46
I enjoy spending time with my family as well as doing my hobbies itself,
02:51
including golf. Go to the gym as well.
02:55
Usually, I would read books at my own free time.
02:59
I like to cycle.
03:00
I like to trek. Also Singapore, also hiking.
03:04
I go to cycling and running.
03:07
Actually, I just bought my bicycle, so it's like $700 something.
03:12
About $100 a month.
03:13
I have a gym membership, so one month is about $200.
03:18
Putting it, what?
03:20
Subjective, yeah, but generally a few hundreds.
03:24
Around $10 to $20.
03:27
Above $2,000.
03:29
If I travel overseas, it's like hiking with shopping,
03:35
with exploring the area.
03:37
Maybe $2,000 to $3,000.
03:39
Probably about one to five hours.
03:43
Four hours a day.
03:45
28 hours.
03:46
I've got a lot of free time.
03:48
Honestly, quite a lot.
03:49
Maybe six to ten hours.
03:50
Maybe six to ten hours.
03:52
Six to ten hours.
03:54
Probably about six hours.
03:57
I will sleep more and go out.
03:59
If I can, I want to sleep a bit more.
04:02
Meeting up with friends over meals.
04:05
I don't want to sleep more. I have slept enough.
04:08
Others, like jalan-jalan or whatever.
04:11
I enjoy cooking, so probably I will take up some cooking classes.
04:15
I will do more side hustles.
04:19
And I will pick up a new hobby.
04:20
Honestly, given a choice, I will definitely spend more time
04:23
on the existing sports that I'm doing.
04:26
But if let's say it's something new, probably martial arts.
04:29
Probably learn a new language.
04:31
Cooking, because I love to cook.
04:33
Motocross.
04:34
3D CAD.
04:36
Because I have a 3D printer at home.
04:38
I went for one class of CAD, but I'm not so good at it.
04:43
Photography, like cooking, and musical instruments.
04:46
Actually, we wanted to learn drums,
04:49
but we just don't have that time anymore.
04:52
How to make coffee, some cooking lessons.
04:56
Arts and crafts.
04:58
And even gardening also.
05:00
Half of the people we interviewed enjoyed spending their free time
05:03
doing some form of sports or physical activity.
05:06
Be it playing football, going to the gym, or cycling.
05:09
4 in 10 of those we spoke to said that they had around 6-10 hours of free time per week.
05:14
And half of all respondents also said that if they had the time,
05:17
they would choose to learn how to cook as a new skill.
05:20
If given two extra days per week,
05:22
those we spoke to were most likely to spend their time with friends and family,
05:26
followed by picking up new skills and hobbies like motocross and 3D printing,
05:30
or doing more of what they already do.
05:32
So, what do you think?
