Friendly Tuff Folks 2
00:02
Oh Theodore
00:04
Likes to do the things
00:06
That Friendly Tuff Folks do
00:13
Hello
00:14
I was working late in my office so
00:16
I decided to sleep here tonight
00:18
The only problem is
00:20
I'm not sleepy
00:25
I should put away my maps
00:31
Ah, that's much neater
00:33
Maybe I should turn off the light in my fish tank
00:37
Yep
00:48
Now what?
00:49
I still can't fall asleep
00:56
But this is so nice
00:59
But this is the perfect chance to tell you
01:01
about what happened today in the big harbor
01:03
We have... Foduck met the Shy ship
01:09
One morning Theodore was bringing Emma Sophia
01:11
the cargo ship into the harbor
01:14
They heard three sharp whistle blasts
01:16
Emma Sophia saw Tugboat in a bright red hat
01:19
steaming towards her with a very serious look on his face
01:22
All secure here?
01:23
He called, inspecting the ship
01:25
Engine in order, hatches battened down
01:28
Foduck's radar was spinning and whirring
01:30
and his underwater sonar machine made loud
01:32
pinging and pointing sounds as he checked out the ship
01:35
Barge traffic ahead, he said finally
01:37
Proceed with caution
01:39
Who was that? said Emma Sophia nervously
01:42
Foduck, answered Theodore
01:44
He's our safety tug
01:46
Is he real? said Emma Sophia
01:49
Mostly, said Theodore
01:51
That's just his way of saying hello
01:58
When Foduck finished his patrol
02:00
he blew his loudest whistle, just like he always did
02:02
and shouted, all safe!
02:07
The dispatcher was waiting for Foduck
02:09
when he returned at the Great Ocean Dock
02:11
Foduck, he said, don't forget
02:13
it is your turn to be on the night shift tonight
02:15
Oh, well perhaps I should have a nap now, said Foduck
02:18
Got to be sharp for the night shift
02:20
That's a good idea, the dispatcher told him
02:24
As soon as the harbour was dark
02:26
and the other tugs were asleep
02:28
Foduck woke up to start the night shift
02:30
He would be the tug on duty until morning
02:33
Foduck began his harbour safety patrol
02:35
just like he always did before he started work
02:37
First, he turned on all his special equipment
02:44
The pinging and the pointing and the whirring and the whistling
02:47
woke the other tugs
02:49
All systems operational, he smiled
02:51
Foduck, grumbled George, go somewhere else and do that
03:03
Foduck was floating along
03:05
when he saw a dark shape lurking near the shore
03:10
Identify yourself, he shouted
03:12
Friend or foe?
03:14
Cable ship, actually, replied Digby, dizzily
03:17
What are you doing here?
03:19
Sleeping, said Digby
03:21
That is, I was sleeping
03:23
Sleeping, repeated Foduck
03:25
Very good, proceed with sleeping
03:27
But just as soon as you stop shining
03:29
that gibberdy gibberdy spotlight of yours in my eyes
03:32
fumed Digby
03:34
Oh yes, just doing my job, sir
03:36
said Foduck
03:43
A little later, something else caught Foduck's eye
03:46
Guysbro, the garbage barge, looked dirty
03:50
Hmm, he said to himself
03:52
A clean harbor is a safe harbor
03:56
So Foduck decided to give the garbage barge
03:58
a good spray with his hose
04:01
I'm melting, howled the grumpy barge
04:05
You see, Guysbro just hates to be clean
04:08
No need for panic, said Foduck, just doing my job
04:12
His patrol was over
04:14
and now it was time for him to blow his whistle
04:16
like he always did
04:19
All safe, he shouted
04:24
Pipe down, hollered Benjamin
04:26
Oh, be quiet, called Lily the lighthouse
04:28
Go back to your dock, Foduck, called Rebecca
04:31
I wonder why everyone is so grumpy at night
04:34
Foduck said quietly
04:36
I don't know, I don't know
04:38
I wonder why everyone is so grumpy at night
04:40
Foduck said quietly
04:42
I'm just doing my job
04:47
Foduck returned to his dock
04:49
Theodore? Theodore, are you asleep?
04:51
he called
04:53
Theodore woke up with a start
04:55
What is it? he stammered
04:57
Fire? A runaway oil rig? A rocket ship crash?
05:00
Oh, it's nothing, said Foduck
05:02
That's the whole problem
05:04
Theodore looked puzzled
05:06
So Foduck explained
05:08
I have the most modern safety equipment in the harbor
05:11
and I can't even do my job
05:13
Everyone's upset at me all of a sudden
05:15
But, Foduck, Theodore said sadly
05:18
Knowing you're there just makes us all feel safer
05:21
Well, it doesn't feel safe to me
05:23
when I'm not doing anything, frowned Foduck
05:27
Theodore watched Foduck float sadly back out into the harbor
05:31
There didn't seem to be anything he could do to make his friend feel better
05:36
Foduck drifted along for a moment
05:38
But suddenly, the water began to bubble
05:43
Action stations!
05:44
He shouted, turning on his radar, his sonar, and his searchlight one after the other
05:52
Oh, it's only you, Northumberland submarine, he said
05:56
Foduck turned off his radar, and his sonar, and his searchlight
06:02
There's a ship outside the harbor who's been there for two nights now, said Northumberland
06:05
She won't come in
06:06
Won't come in, repeated Foduck, scanning towards the ocean
06:11
Oh, I've been talking and talking to her, explained Northumberland
06:14
And I think the reason she won't come in is that she's shy
06:17
She doesn't know anybody here
06:19
Foduck's engine skipped a beat
06:21
At last, something to do
06:22
I'll go right out there and bring her in, he cried
06:25
Once in, Foduck turned on his radar, and his sonar, and his searchlight, ready for action
06:30
Negative, said the sub
06:32
Your job is to get the harbor calm and quiet, so she won't be afraid
06:35
And then attempt to bring her in to talk
06:37
Oh, said Foduck, quietly turning his radar, and his sonar, and his searchlight off again
06:42
Can I count on you, said Northumberland
06:44
I'm a tough little job, shouted Foduck, blasting his whistle
06:50
Remember, calm and quiet, whispered Northumberland, slipping away again
06:55
And you don't have much time
06:57
She's getting ready to leave
07:00
Foduck hurried off
07:02
Calm and quiet, he repeated loudly
07:08
We can't sleep, a voice called
07:10
Foduck looked around, and saw it was Bayswater Barge, who was docked beside Brunswick Barge
07:16
Be calm and quiet, Foduck ordered
07:19
We're not tired, said Bayswater
07:21
We're very restless, added Brunswick
07:24
Are your bumpers out of air, frowned Foduck, inspecting the barges
07:27
Are your ropes tied tightly?
07:29
We want a story, said Brunswick
07:31
Yes, tell us a story, agreed Bayswater
07:34
I'm the safety tug, frowned Foduck
07:36
I don't tell stories
07:38
Please, begged Brunswick
07:40
A story, pleaded Bayswater
07:44
Shhh, said Foduck, alarmed
07:46
Very well, I'll tell you a story
07:50
Foduck cleared his throat
07:52
And began
07:55
Yesterday, at 0900 hours, I observed that it was time for my regular oil change, so...
07:59
No, not that kind of story, interrupted Brunswick
08:02
A real story, but not scary, added Bayswater
08:07
Foduck could feel the precious minutes ticking away
08:09
He knew that shy ship might be leaving soon
08:11
But he had to get those two barges settled down
08:15
Well, I do know one story that Rebecca told me, he said at last
08:19
It's about Theodore and the three barges
08:21
Oh, that sounds nice, said Bayswater
08:24
Foduck began to tell the story
08:26
And the barges snuggled closer to listen
08:31
A little later, Foduck finished his story
08:33
And they all floated happily ever after, again
08:37
Aside from the bell buoy, who required a signal light refit
08:42
Foduck looked around
08:43
To his surprise, Brunswick and Bayswater were fast asleep
08:49
Carefully and quietly, he squeezed out from between the two barges
08:55
Well, that was kind of nice, he said to himself
09:03
Foduck floated around the harbour
09:08
Silently re-tying a tow rope here
09:11
Gently moving a buoy who was off a spot there
09:16
And this time, everywhere he went
09:18
Instead of grumpy words and angry looks
09:21
He heard friendly snorts and satisfied smiles
09:24
As he gently tucked the harbour in for the night
09:28
At last, all was calm and quiet
09:32
Finally, it was time to find the shy ship
09:36
Foduck turned towards the ship
09:38
But first, he turned off all his special equipment
09:42
Hello, Foduck called softly
09:44
My name is Foduck
09:46
My name is Kokoma, said the ship softly
09:49
I hear you're worried about coming into the harbour, Foduck went on
09:52
I guess, said Kokoma
09:55
We have a perfect safety record, Foduck said firmly
09:58
We're going to make it to the harbour
10:00
I guess, said Kokoma
10:02
We have a perfect safety record, Foduck said firmly
10:06
I mean, he corrected himself
10:08
It's perfectly nice
10:10
It's a friendly place
10:13
It is, said Kokoma
10:15
Oh, very friendly, repeated Foduck
10:18
Will you take me in, said Kokoma slowly
10:21
Well, said Foduck, I suppose I could
10:27
Foduck carefully tugged Kokoma into the harbour
10:30
It does look nice here, said Kokoma
10:36
There's no place nicer, said Foduck
10:41
Foduck gently moved Kokoma to her dock
10:46
You'll be just fine here, he said
10:49
I'm on duty all night
10:51
Just call if you need anything
10:53
That's what safety tugs are for, he added, beginning to head off
10:56
It's kind of dark, called Kokoma
10:59
Could you stay with me until morning?
11:02
Well, it just seems pretty quiet, said Foduck
11:07
Please, said the ship
11:09
Okay
11:12
Thank you
11:15
Foduck moved alongside
11:19
I feel much safer now, said Kokoma
11:23
Foduck didn't say anything
11:25
But inside, he wondered how could she feel safe
11:28
I haven't done any of my regular safety patrol things
11:31
I didn't even blow my all-safe whistle
11:38
Later, as the sun was just peeking out over the edge of the harbour
11:42
Foduck looked around
11:44
The tugs were in their dock
11:47
The ships were in theirs
11:49
And over in the distance, he could see the barges
11:52
Snoring soft little barge snores
11:54
He could hear Kokoma's engine purring beside him through his hall
11:58
And then, almost in a whisper
12:00
Foduck called
12:02
All safe
12:27
Oh yeah
