I feel like you guys aren't rising to the challenge. Rudy, reaction.
00:03
One word? Groundbreaking. It's definitely better than what I ordered.
00:06
Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at animated programs that have been submitted
00:11
for consideration at the 2024 Primetime Emmys, singling out the ones most deserving of nominations.
00:24
Number 10. Futurama.
00:27
Just when you thought the Planet Express crew was out, Hulu pulled them back in.
00:31
Considering how well Season 7 wrapped up a decade earlier, we weren't sure if Futurama
00:36
needed to return. Much has happened during that 10-year gap, though, giving Futurama
00:40
plenty to parody in Season 8. It also explored topics that the show surprisingly hadn't covered
00:54
before, like simulated realities, which provides the basis for the episode all the way down.
00:59
It's easy to see why the team chose this episode for outstanding animated program consideration,
01:04
given its inventive story and experimental animation.
01:07
While Futurama has been an Emmy favorite for years, several cast members are overdue.
01:26
Billy West and John DiMaggio have never been nominated for an Emmy. Let's fix that.
01:37
Number 9. Harley Quinn.
01:39
Harley Quinn stands out as one of the funniest shows of the past few years, animation or live
01:44
action. The only thing more consistent than the show's laugh ratio is the TV Academy's
01:49
reluctance to nominate it for an Emmy. Sometimes it takes a while for a show to catch on with
02:03
voters, and we can only hope Season 4 provides a breakthrough for Team Harley. This year,
02:08
the crew has entered Icons Only for Outstanding Animated Program and Writing for a Comedy Series.
02:21
Several cast members, including Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell, also chose this episode as their
02:26
outstanding character voice-over performance submission. The episode makes strong use of
02:30
its ensemble with outrageous interlocking comedic hijinks, complemented by a glitzy
02:35
Las Vegas backdrop. Number 8. Pluto.
02:54
We rarely see anime shows at the Emmys because they simply aren't submitted.
02:58
Even when they are, voters tend to favor Western animation. This year brings a few
03:03
Eastern offerings, with Ninja Kamui and Pluto. The latter is an especially gripping miniseries
03:08
that draws from Astro Boy with several dark twists. Based on Naoki Urasawa's manga,
03:24
the series takes place in an evolved society where humans and robots have learned to coexist.
03:29
This makes it all the more shocking when a beloved robot is murdered with more bodies,
03:33
mechanical and flesh, soon piling up. The first episode establishes this overarching mystery,
03:39
while finding room for an emotional standalone story about a blind composer and his robot butler.
03:44
If nominated, Pluto could make Emmy history.
03:54
Number 7. Scavenger's Reign.
04:00
From its first episode, which has been submitted for outstanding animated program consideration,
04:05
Scavenger's Reign immerses us in a foreign planet that feels alive in more ways than one.
04:10
The world of Vesta is haunting yet oddly inviting, making us want to explore every inch,
04:15
despite the skin-crawling danger around every corner.
04:25
Thankfully, we have a cast of well-defined characters to accompany us on individual journeys
04:35
that gradually merge towards something larger. We sadly may never know what that something is,
04:40
as Max prematurely cancelled Scavenger's Reign after one season.
04:55
The good news is that Netflix might pick it up for a second season,
05:01
and an Emmy nomination would certainly give them another reason to do so.
05:04
We have only scratched the surface of this world.
05:16
Number 6. Invincible.
05:19
Fans waited an eternity between seasons 1 and 2 of Invincible.
05:23
In reality, it was more like two years, but it felt like forever,
05:26
which is alluded to in the season's penultimate episode.
05:29
I gotta ask, when's the new season of Seance Dog coming out?
05:32
You mean the show? Probably not for another year. Sorry, animation takes a long time.
05:39
It's the season 2 finale that's being pushed for Emmy consideration, however.
05:43
The superhero drama again caps things off on a hard-hitting note,
05:46
as Mark enters a rematch with a vengeful Angstrom.
05:49
You really don't remember who I am. Let me help.
05:54
When we met before, you hadn't done this to me.
05:59
Mark has repeatedly demonstrated that his spirit is more invincible than his body.
06:03
Throughout this season, though, we see the potential for Mark to go down a darker path.
06:08
Angstrom not only tests Mark's physical strength,
06:10
but also how far he's willing to go to protect his loved ones,
06:14
revealing victory and loss as two sides of the same coin.
06:18
Go home. Get some rest.
06:22
You're not him.
06:28
You weren't there.
06:30
Number 5. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
06:33
I had a dream about that girl again.
06:37
I didn't care the first time you told me. Care even less now.
06:41
Some expected Scott Pilgrim Takes Off to be a straightforward adaptation.
06:44
The pilot heads in this direction,
06:46
but suddenly shifts the spotlight to Ramona and the supporting players
06:49
in Scott Pilgrim's precious little life.
06:52
This helps the show to form a unique identity by the time we reach episode 3,
06:56
Ramona rents a video,
06:57
which is in the running for outstanding animated program consideration.
07:01
As far as I'm concerned, you won.
07:04
At the same time, creator Brian Lee O'Malley and co-developer Ben David Grabinski
07:09
celebrate all things Scott Pilgrim.
07:11
Animation studio Science Saru brings the comic's artwork to life with kinetic energy,
07:16
while the voice talent reunites the cast from the 2010 cult classic.
07:20
We'd love to see the actors get some Emmy love
07:22
along with the song Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Musical.
07:26
Killer work. Watch that.
07:28
Bad boy of Broadway.
07:30
Tremendous. Spectacular.
07:31
Not bad.
07:32
Number 4. Has Been Hotel
07:35
Speaking of songs, Has Been Hotel should be a frontrunner in outstanding music and lyrics
07:40
for the infinitely upbeat Loser Baby from the episode Masquerade.
07:43
I'm a loser, honey, a schmoozer and a dummy,
07:49
but at least I know I'm not alone.
07:52
You're a loser just like me.
07:54
That same episode has been entered for outstanding writing for a comedy series,
07:58
but in the animated program category, the crew submitted Dad Beat Dad.
08:02
This episode introduces Charlie's father,
08:05
who isn't everything you'd expect Lucifer to be.
08:07
You're inviting me over?
08:11
Absolutely!
08:13
I'll be there in an hour.
08:16
My daughter wants to see me.
08:18
Take that, depression!
08:20
If Lucifer can be a loving father, there might be hope for others in hell,
08:24
further vindicating Charlie's dream of rehabilitating sinners.
08:28
In that sense, this episode sums up what the show is all about,
08:31
complete with lively music and eye-popping animation.
08:34
Vivian Medrano's creation has come a long way since its YouTube genesis.
08:38
Whatever happens at the Emmys, it's a winner, baby.
08:42
Well, that was something I didn't expect to see.
08:45
Like I said, you don't know me.
08:47
Sex ain't the only thing I'm good at.
08:50
Good to know, because this guy ain't half bad.
08:53
Number three, Adventure Time, Fiona and Cake.
08:57
What if she's just bored with everything and wishes the world was more magical?
09:01
It should be more magical.
09:03
Since Fiona and Cake were introduced as fictional characters in Adventure Time,
09:07
you wouldn't think a show about them would do much to advance the story.
09:10
Fiona and Cake are far more important to the lore than anyone initially assumed, however.
09:15
This spinoff is just as much about Simon Petrikov, aka Ice King,
09:19
voiced by Tom Kenny in an Emmy-worthy performance.
09:22
This is going to sound nuts, but I think I've been dreaming about you.
09:27
I wouldn't be at all surprised.
09:30
I'm radical.
09:31
As for Outstanding Animated Program, the crew submitted the episode The Winter King,
09:35
which presents several familiar faces in a fresh light.
09:38
It's one of several episodes that take us across a multiverse of wonder
09:42
in a series that balances complex ideas and charming characters as only Adventure Time can.
09:48
While more adult-oriented than its predecessor, Fiona and Cake is eternally young at heart.
09:53
That's actually a nice metaphor.
09:55
Not a metaphor.
09:57
Number two, X-Men 97.
09:59
Another show that grew up with its viewers,
10:02
X-Men 97 evolves everything we loved about its predecessor to the next level,
10:06
from the vibrant animation to the serialized storytelling to the mature themes.
10:14
Eyes, you made it.
10:17
You survived.
10:18
The original series was shockingly never nominated for a single Emmy.
10:22
Voters can do 97 justice by nominating the episode Remember It for Outstanding Animated Program.
10:28
A high point of an exceptional first season,
10:31
this episode overflows with intense action, emotional turns, and heartbreaking performances.
10:37
Most notably, Lenore Zan is rogue.
10:39
If Genosha's shown us anything, it's that we don't need to be afraid of change.
10:45
And if I can play a bigger role and better in the world,
10:49
well, that's the whole reason I became an X-Man.
10:52
It's no wonder that Zan also selected this as her submission in the voiceover category.
10:57
Marvel has another contender with What If?
10:59
Cohorti Reshaped the World,
11:01
but few superhero shows have captured the zeitgeist like this throwback
11:04
that's constantly looking forward.
11:06
I may not be Jean Grey, but I know what the professor would say if he was here.
11:11
Time to dream bigger.
11:13
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
11:17
Rick and Morty.
11:18
This two-time winner aims for a third Emmy with Unmortrican.
11:22
It's you and me, Morty.
11:24
Rick, Rick and Morty.
11:25
100 years.
11:26
Forever.
11:27
Yeah, pal.
11:28
Rick and Morty.
11:29
100 years.
11:31
Forever.
11:32
South Park.
11:32
Joining the Panderverse.
11:34
This special does everything except pander to its fan base.
11:38
I'm scared, mom.
11:39
Will you please just look and make sure Kathleen Kennedy isn't under my bed?
11:43
Kathleen Kennedy is not under your bed.
11:46
Can you check the closet?
11:47
Eric, enough.
11:48
Star Trek Lower Decks.
11:50
Elevate this show to a higher status by nominating the episode 2vix.
11:55
This ship is outdated and smells like Borg.
11:57
What about Tulok?
11:58
You must be excited to see his quarters.
12:00
Perhaps.
12:01
Are they austere?
12:02
Clone High.
12:03
This revived show strategically submitted an episode called For Your Consideration.
12:08
Gandhi, you've been pretty quiet.
12:09
What's your take?
12:11
Huh, I thought I was talking to my comedic sidekick Gandhi.
12:14
Let me know if you see him, turkey fire hydrant.
12:16
Star Wars The Bad Batch.
12:18
Let's give these clones a farewell hug by awarding the series finale.
12:22
Keep an eye on Rika and Crosshair while I'm gone.
12:25
Betcha too.
12:29
Off you go.

12:46
Number 1.
12:47
Blue Eye Samurai.
12:49
Blue Eye Samurai isn't just the most strikingly animated show we've seen in the past year.
12:53
It contains possibly the most gripping story we've experienced across all mediums.
12:58
Where may I find your brother, the black market merchant Heiji Shindo?
13:05
You did all this to find my brother?
13:09
Why?
13:12
Protagonist Mizu's revenge mission had us hooked from the first episode,
13:16
which is contending for outstanding writing for a drama series consideration.
13:20
In Outstanding Animated Program, the crew has entered The Tale of the Ronin and the Bride,
13:25
which explores how Mizu almost had a very different life bound to end in heartbreak.
13:30
And so the bride met her death.
13:33
But she did not meet her end.
13:35
Within her lifeless body roiled a tempest of hate, betrayal, injustice, possessing her soul.
13:45
Maya Erskine delivers a restrained yet deeply powerful performance as Mizu,
13:49
while Kenneth Branagh crafts the most hateable villain of recent memory.
13:53
Blue Eye Samurai already swept the Annie's.
13:55
It deserves to conquer the Emmys next, and not just in the animation categories.
14:00
You think revenge is an art?
14:03
Swords, pots, noodles, death.
14:06
It is all the same to an artist.
14:09
What animated show are you hoping to see at the Emmys?
14:11
Let us know in the comments.
14:13
I don't need to be great.
14:16
I just want to be happy.
14:25
I want to be great.
