Sydney Metro City set to open in August

The NSW Premier's announced the newest stretch of the Sydney Metro will be opened in August. Testing is nearly complete on the link between Chatswood and Sydenham that'll soon be carrying commuters through a new harbour tunnel.

00:00Deep beneath the new-look Martin Place station, the Premier took on the role of commuter-in-chief.

00:08He'd been promising a train every four minutes during the peak.

00:14Now it was time to deliver.

00:16Chris Mins and his transport minister were heading for the harbour,

00:19and after a brief stop at Barangaroo,

00:23the Metro hit its stride.

00:28That's right, we're just about to go under the harbour.

00:30Trains on this stretch are being tested to see if they can cope with the real-life timetable

00:34ahead of the opening sometime in August.

00:36After arriving at Crow's Nest in just seven minutes,

00:39Jo Halen was confident commuters would be content.

00:43We are talking about fast journey times,

00:45just three minutes from Barangaroo through to North Sydney,

00:48or 15 minutes from Central Station to Chatswood.

00:52This link means passengers can go all the way from the north-west to the city without changing at Chatswood,

00:58although the lower section from Sydenham to Bankstown is still more than a year away.

01:03While this is a good news story for the Labor government,

01:06the truth is most of the work was done under the Coalition.

01:09It was a pet project of Gladys Berejiklian,

01:12so will the former Premier be invited to cut the ribbon?

01:15I wouldn't go that far.

01:18I want to make it clear that former Premiers will be invited to the opening of this line.

01:24That's really important to acknowledge.

01:26Let's be honest, most of this was completed under the previous term of government.

01:30Labor says it's also about $9 billion over budget,

01:34but there's little choice now but to get on board.
