New Rozelle Interchange in Sydney tested today

The new Rozelle Interchange in Sydney faced a major test today. After four years of construction the interchange is now open, but the Spaghetti Junction of tunnels left some commuters confused this morning.

00:00 It's the first real test today for the new Roselle interchange which officially opened

00:06 in Sydney yesterday.

00:08 This morning peak hour commuters navigated the 16 kilometres of tunnels that now connect

00:14 the M4 to the Anzac Bridge and the M8 to the City West Link and Victoria Road.

00:20 The Roselle interchange also includes the Iron Cove Link section which provides a toll-free

00:25 underground bypass of Victoria Road.

00:28 But some motorists this morning were left confused, mainly by a sign near the Iron Cove

00:32 Bridge that labels it a toll road, incorrectly suggesting there is a toll for the new underground

00:38 bypass.

00:39 Some drivers then deliberately avoided the section, with a few making last minute lane

00:43 changes.

00:44 Howard Collins from Transport NSW says drivers should keep going if they accidentally enter

00:50 the wrong lane and not to reverse back or make a very late switch.

00:54 We ask motorists, please do not do this.

00:56 It is highly dangerous, it is against the law, you will face a fine.

01:00 Police are making big patrols in that area, I've seen a lot of police motorbikes about.

01:04 Keep going, if you've made the wrong decision, you will get to your destination safely, as

01:09 opposed to causing what could be a major accident.

01:12 The confusion this morning led to very heavy traffic on Victoria Road with cars banked

01:17 up for kilometre upon kilometre.

01:23 Signage, there's no signage about it, so I've ended up in the M4 out to Dromoyne, have to

01:28 do a U-turn to come back in this.

01:30 It's taken me an hour and 40 minutes to get here from Gladesville.

01:33 I could see that it was free when I was near it, but I don't know where it's going to come

01:36 out.

01:37 The Premier, Chris Mins, acknowledged today that the new signage around the Roselle interchange

01:41 was not good enough, and he says that portable electronic signs will be put in place by tomorrow.
