Peel High vice captain Jenna Stewart finds building blocks for activism starts in the classroom

00:04 At Peel High we are so lucky, we have such an incredible school.

00:07 We've got all these incredible groups of people and it's just such a rich learning environment,

00:12 not just on an educational level but on a social level.

00:16 You get so much social literacy and you can see it.

00:20 [Music]

00:29 LGBT rights came to light for me with the plebiscite that we had in 2016 I think it was.

00:35 And so that kind of, I started to understand that there was a whole other world of people who were struggling

00:41 and you know, they deserve the same rights as us.

00:46 And then being Peel High the school we are, we've got quite a high Indigenous population.

00:51 And just, I've learned so much culture within this school and I can see,

00:57 even unfortunately with other schools within our region,

01:00 the inconsistencies and the lack of understanding that they have for the struggles that people face.

01:06 People that they know and people that they're close to, their peers, face these problems and they don't understand that.

01:11 And I guess just seeing that and being lucky enough to be taught so properly about that

01:18 and being in such a privileged position, being able to help people as best as I can as well.

01:25 And these are some of the groups that struggle the most within our school.
