The office of retired president Uhuru Kenyatta has denied reports that the government acquired new vehicles for his office as required by the constitution. https://shorturl.at/w1Aur

00:05 two Toyota Land Cruisers, as stated in the statement, one Mercedes-Benz and one Range

00:10 Rover that is in use by the former First Lady, Mama Margaret Kenyatta.

00:15 The four Toyota Prados that have been mentioned are in use as follows.

00:19 Three are used by the security detail that was given to the former president, and one

00:25 Toyota Prado that is being used by the office, as well as one Subaru Forester.

00:31 Now what the government spokesperson did not clarify is that the vehicles allocated to

00:35 the former president for personal use were not new.

00:38 They were in fact the cars that were part of his motorcade when he left Kasarani during

00:43 the inauguration ceremony.

00:46 And this was agreed upon by State House, that the former president uses these vehicles on

00:51 transitional basis as they begin the process of procuring new vehicles as stipulated in

00:57 the Presidential Benefits Act.

01:00 That is two new vehicles of the retired president's choice, replaceable every three years, and

01:06 each car having an engine capacity not exceeding 3,000 cc.

01:10 Two four-wheel motor drive vehicles of the retired president's choice, also replaceable

01:19 every three years.

01:21 Each vehicle having an engine capacity of 3,000 to 4,000 cc.

01:26 Just a point of note as well, the late president Daniel Arap Moi and the late president Mwai

01:31 Kibaki were allocated and maintained more than double the number of vehicles that have

01:36 been allocated to the third retired president to ensure optimum running of his office.

01:42 There were fuel cards that were issued.

01:44 The fuel cards were given, however they were cancelled and blocked by State House since

01:49 March 2023 to date.
