Actor Andre Holland speaks on what he wants people to learn from the series &#039;The Big Cigar&#039; and Huey P. Newton.

00:00 Well, Huey P. Newton, what do you hope that his legacy or his impact will be with the

00:06 general public after they see this?

00:08 Well, I hope that people who see this will be inspired to learn more about the party

00:14 and about Huey.

00:15 I mean, he's a complicated figure, right?

00:18 He caused a lot of harm.

00:19 He was a product of his time in a lot of ways.

00:22 He also was fiercely intelligent and so courageous and powerful.

00:28 One of the resources that was helpful to me was the Huey P. Newton Foundation up in Oakland.

00:31 So they're doing a lot of really wonderful work at furthering his legacy, preserving

00:36 his legacy, and also educating people about what the Panthers were all about, really,

00:40 which was not obviously guns and violence and all of that.

00:44 And then also trying to continue the work by getting a national park, for instance,

00:50 and educating young people in the community about what the Panthers were doing.

00:55 So I hope that people watch the series and then get really curious and go to places like

00:59 the Foundation or to the library and pick up one of the many books that there are about

01:04 the Panthers, and particularly the women who were a part of the movement.

01:07 I think they often go under celebration.
