Sunderland College has been hosting its second International Cultural Festival.
Transcript
00:00 Okay, why don't you start by asking what today's event is all about then?
00:04 Well, our International Cultural Festival here at Sunderland College is all about creating
00:10 a deeper understanding with our own students of those who are sick in sanctuary, many of
00:16 whom live in Sunderland itself.
00:19 And so what's taking place there? What sort of things are going to be happening in the
00:22 event?
00:23 So we have an action-packed afternoon full of cultural diversity. We have the refugee
00:30 service here who will give a little bit of a presentation around the work that they do.
00:36 And also our own students, many of those who have previously been seeking refuge, will
00:43 give some of their own lived experience as well. And this is all part, this is the whole
00:47 purpose of the event this afternoon.
00:50 There'll be world food, there'll be international music, there'll be costume, and lots of fun.
00:56 And how important is it as a college and also as a city that we embrace multiculturalism?
01:01 It's extremely important, and again that's the main reason for an event like this. We
01:06 want those who are sanctuary seekers to be able to feel at home within our own communities,
01:13 within the city of Sunderland. And this deeper understanding in our own home students will
01:18 certainly help along the way.

01:44 Okay, then I'll just let you tell me what we're doing at this event in place.
01:48 Today I'm going to be performing a couple of songs with my friend in an acoustic duo.
01:54 Just a couple of songs just to, I think, to promote ourselves as well, but you know, just
02:00 to embrace that.
02:03 It's music from the Philippines, yeah?
02:05 It'll be, I'm going to do that after. So after our set with an acoustic duo, I'm going to
02:11 be performing on my own, doing a couple of songs in my own language and a couple of songs
02:17 that are English but are from the Philippines. And I'll tell a little bit about why Filipino
02:23 music is so special to me.
02:25 How important are these sort of events in promoting multiculturalism?
02:29 I think they're super important, first of all, because people from other countries can
02:36 come together and talk about what they have in common, you know, especially moving to
02:41 a different country, say what that's like, you know, learning about each other's cultures,
02:45 especially people outside the cultures to learn more about that.
02:52 I think, you know, in my opinion, the world is a very interesting place and I think it's
02:58 worth it that people know more about each other's heritage and culture, see if they
03:04 can implement it in their own life, and yeah, just little stories.
