Severe storm threat continues across the South on Thursday

From hail and lightning in Texas to flooding in the Carolinas, severe thunderstorms persisted on May 9.

00:00As we take a look at the ongoing severe weather right now, we have a cluster of

00:03strong and severe storms in Alabama and Mississippi,

00:06another round into parts of Texas as well. And otherwise, a lot of the action

00:10from the Carolinas has moved offshore, so that's less of a threat at the moment.

00:13But we will revisit that tomorrow into North Florida and South

00:17Georgia. So let's take a look at what's going on here. We're going to populate

00:19the map with some lightning, and there's a lot of that here

00:22into parts of central Alabama and into Mississippi as well. So

00:25numerous severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect here. Lamar County of

00:29Alabama, also into Pickens County of Alabama, west of Tuscaloosa,

00:33western Greene County, northern Sumpter County, northern parts of Kemper County,

00:36Mississippi, far southern at Knoxville County,

00:38then also into areas around Holmes County, Yazoo County, and

00:42northern parts of, well, southwestern Italia County, and western

00:45and northern Madison County of Mississippi, where ongoing severe

00:48thunderstorms are in progress. Some of these storms

00:51have brought some hail. Here's a recent report there from just,

00:55what, 30 minutes ago, 6.32 central time. We're looking at ping pong ball size

00:59hail there in New Hope, Mississippi. And as we head farther west, we've had

01:03some nasty storms here into Texas as well. Some of these have been bringing

01:06some large hail and damaging thunderstorm winds.

01:09Areas around Waco, along I-35, just tremendous amount of lightning strikes

01:13here. Also along I-45 into Fairfield, Texas,

01:16we're dealing with some strong and severe storms.

01:18So areas like western Freestone County, southern Navarro County,

01:21much of Limestone County, under a severe thunderstorm warning. Then into

01:24McLennan County, home to Waco, northwestern Falls County, severe

01:27thunderstorm warning for you, north of Temple and Killeen and Bell County.

01:30And then another nasty storm here into Llano and Marble Falls, and this storm

01:34has a history of some rotation earlier. We can

01:38take a look at this from a couple of different options here, but

01:40off from the east, we can look at this storm hazards. And there is some hail out

01:45here south of Llano, about also the size of

01:48ping pong balls there in an area south of Llano. This might be

01:52a little more remote between Oxford and Click there into

01:55southern parts of, this would be Llano County. Also

02:00moving into northwestern Blanco County and southern Burnett County, we'll have

02:02some issues there with some hail potential as well. So

02:06there's the the more cohesive view of what's going on

02:09on radar. When we take a look at the watches, our

02:12watches still continue. Many severe thunderstorm watches here. There are

02:16three of them that survive at this hour, and they're running here into central

02:20Texas and also into parts of northeast Texas,

02:23into southern parts of Arkansas, northern Louisiana.

02:26Another one from Mississippi into Alabama too. And then

02:29fragments of a tornado watch here near Dothan, Alabama.

02:32Also a tornado watch that may have a slightly greater threat comparing the

02:36two from Waco West to areas south of

02:38Llano, Texas. So overall, we still are tracking some strong

02:42storms. There's been a couple of severe thunderstorms into parts of West

02:45Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania today. A little hail there, but the main

02:49event has been in Mississippi, Alabama, mainly near and north or near and south

02:53of I-20 to near and north of I-10. Central Texas

02:57is in the hot seat at the moment. It's pretty hot in some spots here. We

03:00have a 94 degree reading an hour ago into Austin.

03:03Still 87 in Corpus Christi and El Paso. Other areas are a little cooler, 72 into

03:09Atlanta, Jacksonville right now. Tomorrow, where are we going from here?

03:12We've got some more thunderstorms. These are going to be severe

03:15in south Georgia and north Florida. Some nearby areas could also face

03:19a risk. We're looking at hail and locally heavy rain

03:22and damaging wind are the main issues here. About 7 million people facing this

03:26threat. Albany, Georgia, Savannah, Jacksonville,

03:29and Tallahassee, four cities at risk of wind, hail, and flash flooding.

03:34And another storyline that we're going to be keeping an eye on will be the

03:37return of some of those heavy rainers into

03:40Houston eventually. We'll look at that with the extended forecast

03:43in a little bit. But again, Friday storms there in north Florida.
