Vladimir Putin was sworn in for a record fifth term as Russian President on May 7 at a Kremlin ceremony. Putin said he considered leading Russia a "sacred duty" as he was inaugurated for a new six-year term, prolonging his more than two-decade rule. Putin, in office as president or prime minister since 1999, started his new term over two years after deploying tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine.
