How are you doing Michelle? We're here at PEGS and fantastic work you do, you've got a bit of a
00:04
fundraising event coming up haven't you? Yeah that's right, our team are walking
00:09
40 miles during the month of May to hopefully help raise up to £4,000
00:14
throughout the year. We've got a project of fundraise for PEGS
00:19
going on. Yeah and four years is very significant because it's your fourth anniversary
00:23
that's right isn't it? That's correct, we were four in March and I can't believe how
00:28
much we have grown. I mean it's also really sad when you think about actually
00:31
why we're here, but in the space of four years we have seen our referral rate
00:35
grow quite significantly to be honest. So a few years ago we were having maybe a
00:40
hundred referrals a month, now we are actually having in excess of 500
00:45
referrals a month which is incredible. It's mad isn't it? So we've got
00:50
parental education growth support, so basically you look after parents that
00:54
are being abused by their own children, is that the basic summary? Yeah that's
01:00
correct, PEGS, helping parents hold things together. Cheesy but effective right Steve?
01:04
Yeah and that is our mission you know, is to provide that safe space and that
01:10
sound in board and provide that emotional and practical support that
01:14
quite often parents, carers and guardians desperately need, but are sometimes
01:18
overlooked and we're not saying that parents or caregivers matter more, we're
01:22
saying they matter too and they do. And this form of abuse is really difficult
01:26
sometimes to understand, it's really misunderstood and society doesn't even
01:30
accept that it exists. But in terms of reality we know that one parent every 19
01:35
days is killed in England and Wales by the hands of their child and so really
01:39
we need to be starting doing more, we must start normalising the conversations.
01:44
And for £4,000 that will help you in what regards, what can you do
01:51
with £4,000? So it's really exciting, so £4,000 will actually provide us with
01:57
the funds to be able to deliver a bespoke package of support to almost 40
02:03
people, again sticking with that four theme, where they can work one-to-one
02:07
with our specialist practitioner team, have access to programmes and specific
02:12
workshops, join our peer support group and get that much-needed help
02:16
that's out there for them. But sadly due to the constraints of us as a
02:20
social enterprise you know we need to be raising much-needed funds.
02:24
Well that's it, you know you do need the money, I mean you've helped some
02:27
speaking at national events haven't you, in regards to what you do and kind of
02:31
giving advice and raising awareness. But there's no money from central government
02:35
or anything like that, it's kind of, it is fundraising isn't it really?
02:39
Exactly, we're very privileged at PEGS, we have had some incredible
02:43
opportunities, you know we have become trusted partners of NHS for Safeguarding
02:47
for example, we've created an employer-backed Covenant, we've spoke at
02:51
conferences up and down the country, we really are so lucky to have those
02:57
opportunities. But sadly whenever we do go out and do those events that are
03:01
needed, the awareness raising that we're delivering is a must, it sees an influx
03:06
of referrals which again then impacts on such a small team, we're a team of 11 and
03:11
we do try and provide that support across the UK, but without those funds,
03:15
those grants, those donations, our worry and our fear is that PEGS one day may
03:20
not be here. Yeah I mean it's worth saying just in the nine days, you've had
03:24
99 referrals kind of drop on your doorstep haven't you? Exactly and the
03:28
more that the team, the referral team are incredible and as much as they're
03:32
getting through them and making those, you know there's much needed responses,
03:35
we're having almost double come back in to meet it, so it's really hard going at
03:40
the moment. We have a 10 day response time frame to let parents know that you
03:45
know we are really busy but you do matter, we will get round to your referral,
03:49
we will get back in touch with you but please allow us 10 working days to do so.
03:53
But with those referrals now almost a hundred, we might have to look to extend
03:57
that which is really sad. Yeah and there's lots of things coming up through
04:01
the year in terms of fundraising, we've got a cyclist that we'll be
04:04
catching up with at some point, there'll be a nice colourful kind of run event
04:08
coming up. So for this one, if anyone wants to get involved and kind of in
04:13
regards to the walk and sponsorship and so on, what do they do, how do they get
04:17
hold of you? So if they follow us at Peg's Support for example, drop the pages a
04:21
message, we can send a fundraising pack. Our incredible social media Queen Thea
04:25
has created a pack to help people to look at what they can do to fundraise or
04:30
equally maybe fundraising yourself is not your thing but you'd like to donate
04:35
and we would welcome that too. You can find out more through our website,
04:39
through contacting us directly and we can pop a link on so anything would be
04:43
welcome. So thank you very much.
