A man was finally about to hug his brother for the first time after a dream where he had a sibling prompted him to take a DNA test and discover a new family member. Despite moving to the Katy, Texas, area, Phuong Doan did not know that his half-brother, Juan Lewis, had attended high school just down the road. In fact, Phuong, who moved to the United States from Vietnam in the 90s, had been searching for his American family for five decades, having been made aware that his father was once in the U.S. military when he met his mother in his homeland. Phuong's half-brother, Juan, meanwhile, had no idea that he had a sibling with ties on the other side of the world, either, as his father, Melvin Lewis, passed away in 1988 and never mentioned the subject. It wasn't until Juan, who was also in the military, came down with COVID that he had a chance dream, which he said informed him that he had a sibling. Juan puts the vision he had down to the drugs that he was taking to fight the disease – but the experience was enough for him to look into his genealogy. When a DNA website matched Juan with Phuong, the Air Force veteran thought there must have been a mistake, given how different Phuong's name sounded from his own. But having contacted the website, Juan was informed the match was correct, and so he and Phuong started messaging, piecing together their incredible story. The pair were in contact over the years that followed before Juan and Phuong's wife, Linda, decided to plan a surprise first meeting for her husband. In September 2023, at a salon where Linda works in Katy, Texas, Phuong was chatting to his wife when Juan and his family walked in for the big surprise. A stunned Phuong could not believe his eyes, heading over to his half-brother for an emotional first hug that had been fifty years in the making.

00:00 These brothers are meeting for the first time in 50 years.
00:04 Growing up, I never had any type of idea that I had any other siblings.
00:09 Juan has three younger sisters and an older brother.
00:12 I always wanted a younger brother, but I always knew that I didn't have a younger brother.
00:17 But that thought changed when Juan was working overseas in the military and got really sick.
00:23 When I was in the hospital, they were expecting me to die.
00:26 You know, people were dying all around me.
00:28 And when I was laying there, I kept having a weird dream about having a little brother.
00:33 And this dream just wouldn't go away.
00:36 And I just kept seeing a little brother out there.
00:38 And I'm like, "Man, why am I having these weird dreams?"
00:41 But I said, "If I ever get out of this hospital, I'm going to go back there and do some ancestry."
00:46 And luckily, I made it out because I was supposed to die.
00:49 You know, the doctor called my wife and told my wife I wouldn't make it through the night.
00:52 And it just happened that I made it.
00:54 And when he explored his ancestry results, he found out about someone he'd never heard of,
00:59 who shared half of his DNA.
01:01 And I remember calling back Ancestry, asking them why they mixed up my DNA,
01:05 because I didn't really recognize a lot of names on my ancestry.
01:11 And then when I contacted them about it, I said, "I'm sorry, it's not a mix-up."
01:14 And I'm like, "What do you mean?"
01:15 They're like, "This is accurate."
01:16 And so I was like blown away, like, "Man, this is like, who is this guy?
01:20 You know, I got to find this guy. I got to track this guy down."
01:22 Turns out it was his half-brother Phong.
01:26 Their dad was in the US military when he met Phong's mom in Vietnam.
01:30 And Phong later moved to the US, hoping to find his American family,
01:35 though hadn't had any luck in five decades.
01:39 But all that was about to change.
01:42 - Phong! - Jason.
01:45 - Nice!
01:47 - Hey, buddy. - Hey, dude.
01:56 Look at you.
01:58 Oh, man.
02:04 - Boy, you look like that. - I know it wasn't supposed to be tomorrow,
02:08 but you know it's no surprise today.
02:16 Oh, man. Man, you look just like dad. Look at you.
02:19 Seeing is believing. I saw him and I saw a part of myself.
02:23 I saw our dad inside of him.
02:25 My dad passed away in 1987, and Phong is a spitting image of our dad.
02:30 So whenever I look at Phong, it's just like I'm looking at my dad all over again.
02:35 - It's okay. - It's okay. Come on.
02:38 It's okay. Let it go.
02:42 - Oh, man. - I love you, bro.
02:43 - I love you, too. Look at you. - Good guy.
02:47 - I love you, too. - Good to see you.
02:52 - This is my brother. I said Phong. - My brother.
02:56 - Oh, you said Phong. - Yeah!
03:02 - You can't cheat, man. - Oh, my God.
03:05 That was a really surreal feeling. It was probably one of the best feelings I had in my life.
03:11 You know what? I already got like three sisters, so I'm just kind of happy now.
03:15 You know, with another brother over there, because I already had one brother.
03:20 We still like one behind, but I'm looking forward to making more memories.
03:25 Making more memories with the younger brother he always wanted, but almost never found.
03:32 Phong, I know, man. Good God. We got some making up to do, man.
03:36 If I would have never probably got sick, I would have probably been marching to a different drum beat.
03:40 Probably would have never paused to go out there and reflect on trying to find my heritage,
03:44 going out there and doing assets. Then, you know, Phong would have still been a mystery,
03:49 and we would have never still been connected.
03:51 And then I found you. You know what I'm saying? I'm like, "That's really like a Phong."
03:54 I'm like, "Who is this guy?"
