The Senate Health Committee has called on Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi to address the challenges facing Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
Transcript
00:00 The hospital now is running at about 30% capacity in terms of patients.
00:07 There is a drop of patient cases in the hospital.
00:09 But we also have noted that services are fairly running.
00:16 With the available staff, they still continue to observe this.
00:22 And I think one of the things that we have observed is that the consultants who are on call
00:27 are able to come when they are required.
00:31 However, a number of doctors are away because of the strike.
00:36 Secondly, we have also looked at the facilities around the areas that the county of Harlew Hospital
00:43 and the health management team at the county needs to work on.
00:47 And I think those areas we are going to discuss with the governor and his team.
00:52 Where there are challenges, we want to recommend actions to be taken both in the short term and in the long term.
00:59 Also, budgets.
01:01 And we expect to see improvement because this Kembu county referral facility is not only serving the people of Kembu
01:08 but also a number of patients from Nairobi county.
01:12 That at least we are aware as a committee.
01:14 We are investigating a number of matters that touch on patients that have been handled in Nairobi and finally in Kembu.
01:22 There are patients from other neighboring counties that also come to this facility.
01:28 And therefore, we need to improve the facility and resource it with human resources.
01:35 Of course, we have noted other ongoing works like the plumping works around the wards and the hospital.
01:42 And I think they have a good strategy of renovating those that are now under operation.
01:47 What we only require is they need to put more resources and more personnel to do the work
01:53 so that they are able to set up within the shortest time possible.
01:56 Of course, improvements on small things like curtains, all those beddings and so forth.
02:02 But we have also noted that the pharmacy and the pharmacy store is running well, automated and very accurate.
02:09 I think among the counties we have visited in terms of inventory management of drugs and non-pharmaceuticals,
02:15 I think I would say Kembu has done extremely well.
02:19 And this is why we say government services should equally be automated.
02:24 And that's why the national government, when they automate services and ask people to use the e-citizen services,
02:30 their purpose is to create efficiency.
02:32 So we want to control Kembu from that bit of management of drugs, the automation process.
02:38 We have also seen that there is an automation process ongoing.
02:41 And we hope they will be able to complete on time and make sure that people of Kembu can then access services.
