A group of hardcore knitters from Ripon have been knitting thousands of balls of wool to
00:07
mark D-Day in North Yorkshire. Since January, they've spent over 5,500 hours creating their
00:15
own woolly tank to mark 80 years of D-Day.
00:21
Ripon itself has a rich military history, but in 2017, when no poppies nor celebrations
00:27
were to be seen for the annual D-Day anniversary, it led to complaints from locals.
00:35
But now, Ripon Community Poppy Project have started their campaign year on year. Year
00:43
on year, they've managed to get over 75,000 poppies donated, and they refresh them every
00:50
year with different designs. So this inspired the group to do something extra special to
00:58
mark the heritage of the city's military history. Marking the 75th anniversary of the Royal
01:06
Engineers gaining the freedom of the city of Ripon. And here it is. At Ripon's Barracks
01:15
now stands this woolly tank.
