Woollen Tank: Hardcore knitters use thousands of balls of wool to mark D-day in North Yorkshire

A group of volunteers from North Yorkshire have been “knitting furiously” since January, spending over 5500 hours creating their own tank to mark 80 years of D-day.

00:21Ripon itself has a rich military history, but in 2017, when no poppies nor celebrations

00:27were to be seen for the annual D-Day anniversary, it led to complaints from locals.

00:35But now, Ripon Community Poppy Project have started their campaign year on year. Year

00:43on year, they've managed to get over 75,000 poppies donated, and they refresh them every

00:50year with different designs. So this inspired the group to do something extra special to

00:58mark the heritage of the city's military history. Marking the 75th anniversary of the Royal

01:06Engineers gaining the freedom of the city of Ripon. And here it is. At Ripon's Barracks

01:15now stands this woolly tank.
