00:00 The NFA Council approved the increase in the buying price of rice to farmers so that they can compete with traders.
00:08 Will this have an effect on the market price? Find out in the coverage of Bernadette Reyes.
00:13 A few weeks before the rice harvest ended, the NFA Council decided to increase the buying price of rice.
00:23 From the previous 16 to 19 pesos per kilo, they will increase it to 17 to 23 pesos for fresh rice and 23 to 30 pesos for clean and dry.
00:33 According to the Department of Agriculture, this will help the NFA who are having a hard time buying rice for buffer stock
00:40 because of the high prices that traders are buying from farmers.
00:44 The national average is 26.9. So if the buying price of NFA is 23, it really cannot be bought or very minimal.
00:54 So they increased it a little so that the NFA can catch up with the price that traders are offering now.
01:03 This is also good for farmers. According to the Federation of Free Farmers Cooperative, NFA can only buy a limited amount.
01:11 The NFA is really trying to make sure that it will be able to buy enough for its buffer stocks by buying at 33 pesos more than the prevailing.
01:24 The NFA explained that it does not make sense that they will buy rice at the highest price.
01:30 It does not mean that the highest range is our buying price. We will monitor all buying price nationwide.
01:38 There is no uniform price nationwide like before. It's on a per province basis.
01:45 We know that the prices of rice are different in different places.
01:48 That is the new thing now. We will issue a price bulletin for each province.
01:56 Now, the buying price of NFA will be increased if the Department of Agriculture can help it
02:03 so that the NFA can buy more rice from the provinces and the country's buffer stock can increase.
02:10 The NFA's increase in the buying price of rice has no effect on the retail price
02:15 because it is only a buffer stocking mandate and not for retail sale.
02:20 The DA also says that they are doing something to keep the price of local rice competitive.
02:26 In fact, the price of rice has dropped significantly since the harvest season.
02:31 I don't think it will be a significant effect because the NFA's money will buy only less than 2% of total harvest.
02:40 They are not against the NFA in the market because the NFA is just a calamity.
02:46 We are hoping that the price of rice will continue to drop if there is a way to lower the price of rice in our market.
02:53 But the price has already dropped significantly because for the past two months, our pre-bailing is at P50 to P52.
03:00 Now, we are already seeing P46 to P47.
