Fulham 0-1 Newcastle United: Joe Buck's match reaction as Bruno Guimaraes strike downs Cottagers

Joe Buck reacts to Newcastle United's win over Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League. The Magpies were made to work for the three points, but a late Bruno Guimaraes strike sealed all three points for Eddie Howe's side.

00:00 So, Newcastle United bounce back from their late draw against Everton in midweek with

00:05 a win over Fulham here at Craven Cottage. It was a very tight game. To be fair, all

00:11 three games between these two sides have been this year. They've all been very tight, despite

00:14 what the scoreline may suggest. Newcastle beat Fulham 3-0 back at St James' Park in

00:18 December, a 2-0 FA Cup win here in January. Now, in April, they've recorded a 1-0 league

00:23 win and it was a game where Newcastle really didn't start very well. I think Eddie Howe

00:27 even said in his press conference after the game that he felt that the team didn't begin

00:33 the game well and they really stuck in that first half. It wasn't pretty at times but

00:37 they did what they haven't done in a lot of games. They managed to keep it tight and they

00:41 gave themselves a chance by going into the break, goalless. They might not have got a

00:44 goal but they kept Fulham at bay. They did have a couple of good chances of course but

00:48 Martin de Bravco was there to deny them. They gave themselves an opportunity in that first

00:52 half by being solid enough defensively that they could press on in the second half. Their

00:57 only real major concern from the first half was Joe Willock. He went off injured. Eddie

01:01 Howe confirmed after the game that it was a small setback for Willock. Nothing that

01:05 will hopefully keep him out too long term. I think he just thought that Willock wasn't

01:09 himself in that game. He was still feeling that Achilles injury and he replaced him with

01:12 Elliot Anderson who has been slowly getting back to his very best. So that was the only

01:16 disappointment from the first half but Nugat's battled well in the second half. Again, we

01:22 were better in the second half and probably just shaded in the second period. They thought

01:27 they'd gone ahead through Fabian Schär, Anthony Gordon's long cross just over Dan Byrne's

01:31 head but there was Schär to smash home. Everyone thought Nugat's had taken the lead at that

01:41 on him at that point. Referee Sam Allison was told to go to the modern half for a foul

01:45 on Byrne. It's a tough one. It's a soft call. I think even some of the Fulham fans sat behind

01:52 us in the press box and thought it was a soft call and one they got away with. But you can

01:56 see why on the replay it looked bad. Byrne's forearm does go into Calvin Bassie. So it

02:01 does look like it could be a foul but those complaints, they wouldn't be complaints from

02:09 Nugat's. Nugat's did very well to react from that. They scored through Bruno. No doubt

02:16 about that goal. Haverford-Barnes did well. Cross gets cleared out of Bruno Guimara. He

02:21 was smashing it in the bottom corner. Nugat's really took a deserved lead at that point.

02:26 They reacted very well from that disallowed goal. We saw in midweek Dan Byrne had a disallowed

02:29 goal and they weren't able to recover from that. If they'd scored that in midweek they

02:33 probably would have won the game 2-0 and ultimately end up drawing 1-1. But they reacted very

02:37 well from this goal. Eddie Howe told me after the game he was really impressed with how

02:42 his team were able to react from that setback. It was a good reaction from Nugat's on a good

02:48 match and one that they'll need. It's a win they needed against Fulham who have ambitions

02:52 of getting a New York certainty before this game. It's just another game where Nugat's

02:58 took seven points from three games this week. Or in beating up to the international break.

03:01 I think lots of fans would have taken that at the start of the week. Maybe not the way

03:05 the wins have come. I think everyone thought it would be evident in midweek. But it's a

03:09 good return. Seven points in three games in a week. They've got a week to prepare for

03:15 a huge match against Tottenham. That game against Tottenham is going to be really difficult.

03:18 There's no doubt about that. But they've given themselves an opportunity with a win today.

03:22 I think if they'd got beat or dropped points again that would have been a real tough game.

03:27 Nugat's would really have ended on a down low. But at least now they've got that win.

03:32 I don't think anyone expects them to do anything against Tottenham. So anything next week is

03:34 a bonus. But yeah, Nugat's tonight. Leave the capital. Leave Fulham with three points.

03:38 Again, I think Fulham will be sick of sighting Nugat's over CS.

03:42 Yeah, Nugat's will finish the day in eighth place. West Ham beat Wolves so they remain

03:46 in eighth. So as you were in the league table. But it's certainly a positive step in the

03:50 right direction. And one that we could look at in the season and think that was a crucial

03:54 result. It certainly feels a crucial result now. They had to get... They had to certainly

03:59 not get beat today and get a win. It's that level. That extra level. And this is what

04:02 Nugat's did last year. A lot. Nugat's went to teams like Fulham, went to places where

04:07 you think it's going to be a tough game and they won. And so they've done that again today.

04:11 And yeah, they'll have to do it again next week. And the game after that against Christchurch

04:15 Palace is a crucial few weeks coming up. But they're going to go into that on the back

04:19 of three games, two wins and a draw. I think that's probably the best Eddie Howe's side

04:23 can hope for. So yeah, Nugat's tonight have won Fulham. Eddie Howe's side win again.
