Newcastle United 1-1 Everton: Joe Buck's match reaction

Joe Buck delivers his verdict on Newcastle United's 1-1 draw with Everton at St James' Park. The Magpies took an early lead through Alexander Isak but a late Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty rescued a point for the visitors.

00:12 really ever get into their groove. It seemed it was a tired performance really. I think

00:17 they came into the game with obviously a few injury problems from Saturday with LaSalle

00:21 obviously out for an extended period of time. Neither Tino, Livermando, Miguel Almaron or

00:25 Kieran Trippier also featured today. So, Nicasio's bench involved two keepers and four academy

00:30 graduates with very limited Premier League experience between them. You know, you thought

00:35 Nicasio were just getting over their injury problems but they're back either way. But

00:38 yeah, it was a decent start to be fair for Nicasio. You've got to give him that. Isak

00:43 scored very early on within the first 15 minutes. It was a great goal by him. Harvey Barnes

00:46 with a lovely delicate sort of lob over the defence and Isak did what he does best. Got

00:51 onto it, shoved off a couple of challenges, turned on his right foot and curled past Jordan

00:56 Pickford. And you think 15 minutes in it's a good start and you hope Nicasio can hold

01:00 on. They had a good start on Saturday and threw it away but they did hold on. I think

01:04 Everton posed little threats in the first half because they had a couple of chances

01:08 from set-pieces but Nicasio were comfortable for most of that first half but didn't really

01:14 create too much themselves in that first period. Now the second half starts almost 2-0 up.

01:21 Not really threatening than they did. James Falcovsky's clearance was smashed off the

01:24 post. It was an almost a comical own goal. It would have been the perfect set-off for

01:27 Nicasio but unfortunately that didn't happen. And yeah, you felt as the game went on and

01:36 this year, hasn't been great so you felt like they would need another one. Alexander Isak

01:41 then had a shot cleared off the line. It was great work by Harvey Barnes. He played it

01:45 back to Isak and Isak's so... he's a really scuffish up. He hits it in the ground, doesn't

01:48 get enough power, make a line, go ahead, sit clear. And from that moment you do worry,

01:52 is that going to be the kind of day it was? And it ultimately proved to be that. Five

01:57 minutes from time, Everton send the ball into the box. Paul Dummett who came on for Lewis

02:01 Hall, he grabs Ashley Young and to be fair it's a penalty. Referee then doesn't initially

02:06 give it but after a VAR review it is given and yeah, it is a penalty. I don't think anyone

02:11 can have any complaints about that. He grabs him round the head, Ashley Young goes down.

02:17 And yeah, it's a penalty and Cavalier puts it away, Dabravka does get a hand to it but

02:23 he can't stop it. Yeah, Newcastle tried after that to get an equaliser but it didn't really

02:28 test Jordan Pickford. Pickford made a couple of good saves during the game, the saves you

02:32 would expect him to make. It wasn't anything that you wouldn't expect him to do but yeah,

02:36 Newcastle were very disappointed to let the lead slip, especially with just a few minutes

02:40 to go before the end of the match. They'll be unable to make it back-to-back victories

02:45 and it wasn't really one step back tonight I don't think. I think it sort of just stood

02:50 still. I think before the West Ham and Everton game you would have took four points from

02:53 these probably but then they're going to have to go full on and get a win. But if they do

02:57 that, that's seven points for a week, that's something that they would feel is a positive

03:01 step but yeah, disappointing end to the game. A game that they'll feel they've won. I don't

03:07 know, I think that, do you think Newcastle deserved to win? Probably, you know. Did Everton

03:11 deserve a point? I don't think they did. I think it doesn't make sense because obviously

03:15 someone's got to get a point and Newcastle don't win and that's a point but I don't think

03:18 Everton just stayed in the game and got a penalty and converted the penalty. I think

03:22 Newcastle will feel frustrated that they weren't able to finish their opponents off and feel

03:27 that that was theirs for the taking but that's what happens when you don't get your chance,

03:31 especially in the Premier League. Teams have quality throughout and Everton, Calvert-Lewin

03:35 might not have scored in a long time but he's let it go against Newcastle and from the penalty

03:39 spot, Odds are he's going to score so yeah, Newcastle will be disappointed to have thrown

03:43 it away but they deserve, it was a penalty and they deserve probably not to get the win

03:49 so overall, you think it's a point of fair result? I don't know, you could look at it

03:52 from either ways but yeah, as I said, Newcastle will be disappointed not getting a win, same

03:56 as that, they'll want to win their home games. And yeah, then I have to head to Catmull on

04:14 galvanise themselves again for that trip against Fulham. Fulham themselves got a disappointing

04:18 defeat in Isle of Vale, won a bounce back so yeah, it's a massive, massive game on Saturday
